View Full Version : What's with the Scientology ad?

I'm not trying to make a political statement, and generally I don't complain about advertising—but the Scientology ad seems awkwardly out of place for Macrumors.

Especially, considering it's a front page ad.

The ads are served up by a service. Arn has always had offending ads removed if you provide him information about it.

That said, I think Scientologists are nuts but why censor their ads? I'm sure many of them use Macs. :D

I don't see the problem. They are on the ad network, they paid money for ads to appear, you can ignore it like you do countless other ads that are served up to you.

It's not like "Spit-roast babies, next-day delivery!", is it?

In any case, Scientologists share many traits with Apple enthusiasts... :p

Did you post just to make that comment, or was it just irresistible?

Ah. The genesis of that post is actually quite involved.

At first, I formulated the first part of the above including the spit roast bit, then proceeded to enter into an opinion about how the negative publicity was actually strengthening Scientology by serving to further ironclad the embattled beliefs of its followers and that given the current approach, Anonymous might as well be a recruiting arm for the cult.

Then I was considering adding a parallel with another cult such as Christianity, which enjoyed its first major growth spurt when it was equally ridiculed by a larger 'moral majority'.

In addition to that, I was going to add that if it survives, in a hundred years or maybe a little more it'll be just like any other religion with a more formalised, more universally compatible storyline around the core 'principles' of the cult, and that otherwise perfectly normal people, who would be acknowledged as such by others, would have no problems in declaring themselves a scientologist.

And then, I realised that would be not only long-winded but also possibly a little controversial to some, especially the use of the word cult interchangeably with a major respected religion, so I removed a whole swathe of the post which I hadn't actually began to type out in full in any case.

And then after that, I realised that I had not added the obligatory Apple barb, so I made a very easy (especially with the subject under discussion and the people who gravitate to 'blind worship' of both organisations, regardless of how rational they may believe themselves to be) and probably bang-on analogy.

As I did with the above paragraph for this post.
