If that's the case, would the GPS you wished for in your OP simply be a software upgrade? I have no idea but it seems to me that if the hardware was GPS capable we'd have it enabled right now.
For me, it would be a spreadsheet app, then it could pretty much totally replace my present 4.5 year-old HP Pocket PC/PDA (with a few missing features the Pocket PC has, like bluetooth, but I'd live)

Yeah, I thought of that after I posted and re-read your second post (which replied to the FM-Tuner/speaker request).
However, couldn't the same (through the dock port) easily be done too for the FM tuner and speaker? Or am I (most likely) missing something?

With the new software-update there is a GPS-like function via Yahoo maps - although it does not work everywhere. To get GPS you need a satelite sender/receiver as the Ground Position System is based on satelite information.
What I would like is a separate more powerful interface to manage my touch because I use it for other stuff - contact info etc. Not too happy with iTunes for this task.

A GPS without maps is kinda useless, so a company like TomTom or one of the others will have to come out with software and maps that can be downloaded onto your iPod. With the limited memory on the devices, I'm not sure how much sense a GPS makes, unless they bump up the storage capacity by a pretty large amount.

I got the case from ifrogz.com too, and have since replaced it. I didn't hate it, and have their cases on all of my iPods, but for my touch, I decided to get the Paul Frank (red) case on :apple:.com, and like it better. My complaint with the ifrogz case is that it was a dust/lint magnet, as I got the black one, because they don't have nearly as many color options as they do for other iPods. Other than that, it was great for protection.
I'd love to have installed games that I could play when outside a hotspot. I'd also like it to allow for a customized interface like available with Jailbreak.

I have thought a speaker would be great (and external volume controls like on the iPhone). But, speaker quality for the desired price point could end up not so hot -- and then why bother?! Probably Apple went around on this already when they dumbed down the iPhone design for iPod touch the first time.

I would really like the ability to download podcasts over wifi (as mentioned previously). This should be very simple. iTunes should just tell your Touch what you're subscribed to...
Also, although not possible in this version of the Touch, a vibration function would be nice. It would alert you to new emails when you don't have your earphones on and would be really nice for games.

I would LOVE to get an iPhone extept Apple is haggling with the Phone companies where I live, and most likely they will bind it to one I don't use!!!!!! In other words, it is not even on the market yet - unless i could get someone to bring me one from US and then hack it... a possibility of course, but I would rather spend time using it, not hacking it!

Has anyone used the touch 4 voip microphone?
I use it, and VNotes, every week for one thing or another. It's a lot easier than writing a note down on the fly.
The microphone inserts right into the docking port. It sticks out only 11/16 inches and is 1 1/64 inches wide.
The program is simple to use. Touch the icon, touch two "buttons" and start talking. Touch again to stop. The message is saved with a date and time but can be renamed to anything you want. It can also be sent to an email address.
Hi-Fi? No. But it does produce recognizable, understandable and undistorted speech.
Highly recommended combination.

1. I want and offline news reader. I just got mine ipod touch 2 days ago so maybe I'm missing something. iWebsaver doesn't cut it for me. I'm already sick of emailing myself news and reading it offline with the google.
2. a speaker. I have a small one that goes into the bottom later this week but...
3. Orb.com integration. I can get lots of my video streamed to me but I need my tv streamed live (the whole flash problem). I don't even watch that much tv I just want it.
Other than that I love it. I do know though, if I can't get the offline news thing figured out (workaround) I'm going to Jailbreak this thing. I paid 300 bucks for it and it is mine. Not Apple's. I paid for it. Mine.

General wireless iTunes syncing when in range of host Mac / Windows machine. This would go someway towards take care of those wanting wireless podcast pick-up.
Video out supported by all apps (or the device in general), not just YouTube and video play-back.
Comprehensive bluetooth support for GPS, car-stereo integration, wireless full-size keyboard - the works!

AFAIK, all this could be achieved through software.

A custom-designed app for Pandora internet radio. You put in a song or band name, and it lets you listen to music that is similar to it. I've expanded my little library quite a bit through listening to Pandora :)
pandora.com if anyone's interested.
In the app, you'd be able to store the song name and artist in some sort of built-in list, and when you get home, you could download that song.

First off, flash sucks and always has on basically every mobile platform. Choppy playback and whatnot. Secondly, most useful flash files on the intenet require some sort of user interaction, something that can't really be done with the current UI. Thirdly, you do realize that 90% of the flash on the internet is advertising, right?

Still, they'll be slow as hell and probably not even watchable. You wouldn't be able to control them with the current UI, either. And that would take up a lot of battery life... Flash takes power, the streaming takes power, the playback takes power and so does everything else that normally would.

This just came to mind but I'm thinking more physical or environmental sensing. Things like temperature, humidity, air pressure and the like. There are all sorts of applications for such sensing but a couple of things come to mind.
1.
Would be games. Imagine tying game action into the physical environment, I think it would be pretty cool actually. A change of game play based on the local temperature for example or the sensing of sweat from a users hands, could be used to enhance gaming experience.
2.
The information would be useful when logged with location data.
3.
Local weather information.
Since much of this sort of sensing can already be done inexpensively, possibly with micromechanical devices like the accelerometers, price should be impacted significantly
