How to start up a new mac? (I know this sounds stupid, you'll see why though)

I ordered a macbook pro (first mac ever :D) and it has to get shipped to my house first, then to the APO address which I live. I want to make sure I dont have a doa/yellowscreen/dead pixels on the screen before it gets over here so I am going to have my mom turn it on for me and set it up. She is NOT computer savvy in the least.

I've never owned a mac so I dont know how they setup. Is it like windows where you have to connect to the internet and register a bunch of information? Do I have to have her connect to the internet for a bunch of updates? And lastly does anyone know of an online step by step to setting up a mac for the first time? (It cant be video, long explanation why). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you:)

it's ridiculously easy.
just put in some information about yourself that it asks for. you don't have to register, but I believe you can.

Do you have internet at your house so you can do the updates, because there will be a few?

Why don't you just set it up?

I could set it up but from what I hear you only have 14 days to return it for something like dead pixels or a yellow screen and it takes me 2 weeks to get anything where I live so if I ended up with a bad one I wouldnt be able to exchange it.

but it's been my experience that if there is something wrong with it you have a year to exchange it, unless you get applecare then you have three.

anyway it'd be very easy to set up over the phone, and if you have a .Mac account it's even easier, as you just have to put in your user name and password and then it sets up the rest.

just remember that once you're done installing you should go up to "the little apple at the top left of the screen) and press it the click "software update...." then do all the updates.

If I remember correctly, the startup process will ask for email account info, including password. You should have that ready for your mom. I agree with prior post, a .Mac account is worth the cost.

No you have a years warranty if anything is wrong. The 14 days is for if you change your mind about it or a new model comes out you can swap it.

Dead pixels - there has to be a bunch of them clustered together in order for it to be classified as a "defective panel".

Yellowing - this is "within guidelines" and Apple won't accept that as a defect and will charge you a re-stocking fee.

She turned it on, no dead pixels that she saw and no yellow tint that she saw, so she packed it up and sent it to me :) Now a 7 - 10 day wait until I get it : /

If you mom is not computer savvy, then you should get her a Mac too. iChat with screen sharing is a killer app for remote assistance.

That's true, macs are not only like WAY easier to use then windows, but they alsohave features like this poster said.

Trust me, with macs you wouldnt even need to give your mom instructions, everything is thought out and just makes sense in OS X. Your not on windows no more, so get used to it. :)
