This is well known. What is needed now is for Apple to work out a deal with Rogers and/or Fido, or for another GSM system to launch in Canada.
And it is written as eh? not ey?

Well this is good news I guess, but I'm not looking for room in my bank account till I see an official release date. Unfortunately there's been far too many rumours and signs for ages, ...it all looks promising each time, but nothing has yet to materialize. :(

There is no GSM competition in Canada. Rogers and Fido are the same company. There is no reason reason for Rogers to do anything to get the iPhone in Canada. It would only HURT profits. They are already reaping the benefits of having tons of unlocked iPhones on their network, and don't have to give Apple a cent of that subscriber money.
Don't hold your breath for the iPhone in Canada, until another GSM provider enters the picture. That is still at least a year away.

The 3G iPhone will be UTMS which is the 3G version of GSM, therefore it is mostly just GSM providers that will be upgrading to it. As of now Rogers/Fido has some limited UTMS, other providers use CDMA/EV-DO.

I guess I'll repeat myself. The iPhone is a GSM phone. It uses a sim card. Rogers and Fido are currently the only providers of GSM service in Canada. Whether with the current iPhone or the rumored 3G version, it does not change the realities of the Canadian mobile industry. There is only one option in Canada right now, and it's Rogers. There is no advantage for Rogers to come to an agreement with Apple now, other than to hurt their bottom line. Once there is competition in Canada, that might change.
This patent info that came out today changes absolutely nothing.

No. Otherwise they would have applied for a patent earlier. I think they are applying now because Steve has negotiated a deal that would benefit everyone involved.
Why would it hurt their bottom line (Rogers) as you say?

Because Apple will DEMAND cheap Internet Access and a monthly fee from Rogers.

This patent info that came out today changes absolutely nothing. It's not a patent but a trademark.
The fact that most patent offices also handle trademarks is the reason they're usually called Patent and Trademark Office (e.g. United States Patent and Trademark Office) or just Intellectual Property Office (e.g. Canadian Intellectual Property Office). :p

Your right, its a trademark. But in anycase the only reason I can think of why this is happening is because he is preparing an extra announcement in what is sure to be a slew of announcements at WWDC 08. And that is that the iphone will be debuting in Canada.
So argue about carriers and whatnot all you want. Bottomline is that its coming.

I agree that it's definitely coming. But I don't think it will be on Rogers. Ted is too greedy to give into Apple's demands.
In announcing that Mr. Rogers was bringing some regular seasons Buffalo Bills games to the Rogers Centre, Teddy remarked, "We're going to charge high rates and we're going to have all the seats sold."
At least he doesn't mask his greediness, I'll give him that.
It will either be on Telus (assuming they switch to GSM) or T-Mobile which is rumored to launch in Canada in '09.

Saying something doesn't make it true. You have no comprehension of the Canadian mobile industry, and unfortunately that's giving you false hope. The fact is that the iPhone is already in Canada, it's the most sold thing on the craigslist electronics section.
How you think that companies are going to give up on profit so you can get an iPhone with a warranty is amusing.

No, that is not what it means. All it means is that Apple had decided to apply for a trademark for the name :apple:iPhone back in December. This didn't happen today or this week.
It's kind of like how they apply for dozens and hundreds of patents on technologies that they develop- and most of those technologies aren't even used. They just patent them to cover their butts so no one else could use them and in case they decide to develop them further in the future.
Even if Apple is approved for the trademark, that doesn't mean that they will automatically announce the iPhone in Canada. It's just another thing that they needed to do in the process just in case they decide to go for it in Canada. May as well be prepared. All it means is that they've begun to dot their i's and cross their t's in the event that a deal could possibly be worked out with a carrier (Rogers).
Keep dreaming my fellow Canadians. There's a better chance of the Leafs winning the Cup this season than an iPhone announcement anytime soon.

I doubt Telus, since they're opening up (or have already opened) a new brand under it called KoodoMobile. Their have been talks about Bell introducing GSM for quite sometime (and i'm hearing this from within Bell). And their have been recent rumors about T-Mobile setting up shop in Canada sometime in '09.
This is sort of good news but the bad part is that if iPhone walks into Canada and I really want it, the only place for me to look, is at a Rogers store...that's unfair to consumers, plain and !@#$&@ simple...

Probably because he wants to be guaranteed a seamless customer support experience, without having to worry about questions like, "Will my iPhone simply cease operation without explanation if I attempt to use the next firmware update (eg. the forthcoming June update that allows me to buy SDK Apps)? Uh-oh, better wait until somebody else bricks theirs first just in case."
I seriously doubt there are any moral quandaries along the lines of "Oh, poor Apple! If I use this unlocked phone, they won't get any of my revenue-shared dollars! Waah!"

Our company does beta testing with Rogers. I can tell you that Rogers ARE launching iPhone in Q2. The things affecting the launch are ensuring that Visual voicemail is properly working and reworking their billing platform to handle new plans that will be required. I know for a fact that Rogers is working with Apple engineers. The other thing is that is hasn't been decided whether to launch with Rogers or Fido. The Fido management is fighting to get it but I would put money on it going with Rogers since the arrival of V2.0 firmware makes the phone a great enterprise device with its push email/calendaring.
As for whether Telus or Bell are going GSM... well Bell already is working on a local GSM network for the Olympics. There are tons of roaming dollars to be had from overseas visitors. Long term though, Telus do have a GSM overlay planned on the drawing board but both them and Bell are waiting to see what turns out of the next spectrum auction at the end of May. Any new entrants are almost certainly going to be GSM.
Finally, it's worth mentioning that GSM is a network - not a transmission technology. GSM is actually technology agnostic - it will happily work with TDMA, CDMA, HSPDA, UMTS etc etc as long as the subscriber interface is present (the part that works with the SIM).

Taken with a grain of salt. You know, every once in a while someone posts on this forum claiming to "know for a fact" because they work with or knows someone who works with Rogers and the iPhone is coming out next Tuesday in Canada. I can type a long post to make it seem like I have some inside info too.
The chances of Q2 are slim, considering Apple doesn't even have the trademark for iPhone secured in Canada yet, and won't until June at the earliest, which is the end of Q2. I very highly doubt Apple would cut things so close, with the risk of even further delay.
I would guess there is some planning in the works, but until a deal is cut with Rogers and all legal issues are taken care of, there will be no Apple sanctioned iPhone in Canada.
Do what I did- I moved to Los Angeles from Toronto for the iPhone! (ok, not really....)

Yes. Unfortunately I can't prove anything due to NDA - so I understand and accept the "grain of salt" comment but I have personally seen enough to convince me. I think you'll see it right at the end of Q2 and delays are possible but the paper deal is already done. It isn't in the throws of being done. It is already done. The one thing I was told was that the announcement and launch will be only days from each other. They have lots of other devices in stock and they don't want to announce early for fear of killing sales too early. And, I don't think not having a trademark will stop anything. A Canadian company (Comwave Telecom) had already trademarked the term iPhone so (and this is a pure guess) maybe Apple paid off Comwave and is now doing paperwork to complete the process. Remember anyway, Cisco had iPhone trademarked and Apple still launched prior to resolving it.
But we'll see eventually as it unfolds...

There is a difference between soon and immediate. And as far as companies releasing products is concerned a release next week would be considered immediate.

People have been "predicting" that the iPhone would be coming to Canada since last June. (It'll be here in September....no, wait..... it'll be here in time for Christmas.... I've seen the print ads for them....actually, it'll be announced at MWSF....no, wait, it'll be announced in March.... etc, etc). Which analysts? All the predictions have been on rumor sites. If he doesn't announce a canadian 3g Iphone in June then I will put in my sig "oh yeah, and I'm a dork" for a month.
There is a possibility that Steve will not be able to negotiate a deal in time for June so you may win or I may win.
What do ya say?
Buddy, this isn't about winning or public self-humiliation.
This is about backing up the BS that you decide to post here.
Again, I hope it is announced at WWDC, but I wouldn't count on it. I think that when it is time for iPhone Canada to be announced, there will be harder evidence uncovered prior to the announcement than what is around now (ie. such as the evidence prior to the recent announcement in Austria).

Yeah, we've not only still got snow, but we've still got 6-foot-tall snowbanks. Although it's raining today and supposed to be up to 12 degrees, finally. I'm over at N45, W075. Very interesting coords in your location field, obviously not in Canada though ;)

Chicken? Fine. If you lose you don't have to do anything. But if I lose I will change my sig.
I'm doing this because I think I have a very good shot at winning. But you seem to be so jaded by waiting so long for a canadian iphone that you won't even consider the possibility that it might actually be announced this year.....in June.
And there is no guarantee that "harder evidence" will be uncovered prior to the announcement. If there is then it would be last minute evidence.

Winning? Umm....ok.
Jaded? I'm not jaded about this at all. I got along just fine with my RAZR and without my iPhone while I was living in Toronto. I moved to LA in February, got an iPhone, and haven't looked back.
If you actually read my posts, you will see that I haven't once said that it won't be announced in 2008. All I'm saying is that I'm doubtful for a June announcement, June isn't SOON, and that you've provided nothing but speculation to back up your claim. I've totally considered the possibility that it will be announced in 2008. It probably will be.
Seriously dude, read the posts before you respond to them.

I have been reading them......seriously.
And I seriously and sincerely consider June "soon". And even though I could actually be wrong I strongly believe Canada will be on the list of new iphone countries that Steve will announce at the WWDC 08.....which is in June....and the 2nd quarter.
Do you actually think at this point Steve will make a special announcement just for Canada...tommorow? He is saving all of that for June.
But since your telling me you live in LA now I guess you don't even care anymore.

I still care about what's up back home. I want my friends to be able to enjoy the iPhone like I do.
Who says that Steve Jobs is going to make ANY announcement at WWDC regarding which countries will get the iPhone next? That's not what WWDC is all about.
Why would he be saving any announcement regarding new countries until June? That would be pretty stupid if agreements are already in place- why would Apple and the wireless providers want to lose revenue by waiting over 2 months?
From wikipedia:
"The iPhone was introduced in the United States on June 29, 2007, with releases in the United Kingdom, Germany and France in November 2007, and in Ireland and Austria in March 2008."
I don't recall special announcements at large media/developer events to roll out the iPhone in all of those countries, do you? When it was rolled out in Ireland and Austria, for example, that wasn't announced at MWSF or anything like that. It was just publicized and advertised well so people knew when it was coming.

All right you have a point there. And then there was that recent announcement about Mexico.
But the 3G iphone WILL be announced in June. Its getting to be a real open secret at this point. And along with that I have no doubt that while on stage he will review the countries currently carrying the iphone. And I betcha he is going to show off by mentioning the countries he is about to have the iphone enter.

Maybe so, maybe not. That's just pure speculation though. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the next couple of months bring. Too bad it isn't SOONer. :D

Yes, actually.
I thought that these forums were meant for healthy discussion/debate. Sorry for not being on the bandwagon (The iPhone is coming SOON!!! Some guy said so in his blog!!). The originally intended purpose was to gush over the hope of the iPhone arriving in Canada SOON. I disagreed with the OP, and provided links and other points to back up my point of view.

Dude, weak. In my arguments I have provided information and fact, as opposed to just pure speculation based on cherry-picked hearsay. If anything prolonged what Hawkeye411 refers to as 'bickering', it was your responses. If you didn't want to be involved in our discussion, you could have not responded.

If I choose to stop posting in this thread, I will. Who are you to order me to stop?
Now then: I choose to stop posting in this thread because every time I do, it bumps up to the top. I don't want to contribute to that anymore.
olternaut, I'm sure that you will post some clever response after my post just to get the last word in. It's all yours buddy.

Thank you bud. I will now take the floor.
All I want to say is that the thread did start off hot but has quickly cooled off because all indicators on the canadian iphone possibility were mercilessly shot down (by those whom I will remain nameless). *ahemcoughcoughsurelycoughahem*
But at the very least you have helped me entertain myself as I dart in and out of the office between the various mundane meetings I was attending throughout the day at work.
I thank you. :D

Coming to Canadians soon - a decent rumour of a rumour that you might get an iPhone deal, as soon as Rogers takes the veiled threat from AT&T/Apple/olternaut. Surely not? hehe

My money is on June or Sooner.;) No proof just a "gut feelin". I have 2 now(me and my wife) and love them. But I will buy a Canada supported iPhone when it comes here! I would say if you want it now then dont wait...get one on ebay. I have had no problems with mine and would never go back to a regular phone!

Reading our local daily newspaper, I spotted an advert promoting Mount Royal College's Bachelor of Communication course. They've used an iPhone, but looking closely at the Cell Provider ID (below).. it's ROG... know of any Cell providers with ROG in it's name? How about ROGERS.

Either someone's paying through the nose in roaming charges or perhaps this one's been Jailbroke and they're simply using a Rogers SIM card in there instead.
