I switched my dad to the Mac years ago, but for his office, I just switched him today. We bought a Mac Mini for his front desk after their year-old PC got viruses because the cleaning staff would come in at night and look at pornography. 🙄

I've set up and Administration account for me, my dad, and his IT staff, another one for the receptionists that's password-managed, and a guest account for emergency situations.

In the guest account, however, I want to keep a simple rich text file with contact information for his receptionists in case they lose the password or something's wrong with the computer. However, the problem with guest accounts is that they erase everything after log out, so is there any way I can do this?

Thanks.

I don't known but a possible solution is to change the default background located here /System/Library/CoreServices/DefaultDesktop.jpg to include that information. This will of course affect the login screen etc.

Also do they all need admin accounts, why not one admin, several normal, and the guest account. Admins can view other admins files very easily just FYI.

No, I guess I didn't word that properly. I'm having one admin for me, my dad, and IT, one normal with a password for the receptionists, and an in-case-of-emergency guest account.

I guess I could make a personal destop background with all that info, but that seems a little cluttered, and I don't want that. Any other solutions?

the guest account is a new feature in Leopard. it allows a guest to temporarily log in to the computer to checking email, do banking etc and when they log out the whole account is deleted so their information cannot be recovered.

if you want a permanent guest account create a managed account and name it "client" or something (cant be named guest). this account can have basic preferences set like background picture, mouse speed, dock size etc where the guest account cannot and the account wont be deleted every time you log out.

Ahh ok gotcha.

Did a little search on macosxhints and worked out the solution. Create the text file and add it to /System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Desktop

Have to change preferences to get there but I just tested it and it appeared. You can also edit preferences for the dock etc by modify files in the associated directories.

First Log In as root (or use the terminal if you know how)

Navigate to "/System/Library/User Template"

find the "Language.lproj" folder for the language these users are using

Within this folder you will find the standard folders and files that a new user has in their home directory. Anything that you add here will show up in the default home folder for a new user (this includes guest users, as the system simply creates a new user every time).

Okay, so I'm not at his office now, but I'm at home on my iMac G5 where I've set up a Guest account. I'm currently logged in as myself (the admin), and the User Template folder is blocked. How do I get into it?

Get Info - Sharing and Permissions (down at the bottom) click the padlock, then add yourself with read and write. Have to do this for the folders a long the way.
