anything have a good trick/tip on how to create a realistic heat/steam effect? Lets say for a bowl of food or something, where it would distort the surround image. Thanx everybody

Fast and easy way of doing this is ( In a new layer, above your bowl or what have you) take your brush tool, set at the size you prefer, with very little hardness to the brush. make a few swirly lines, using white above the image. Then ad a gaussian blur to it, at a pretty high percentage. Fool around with it to get it right. There are some other great ways too. but this one is fast and simple

If you want to realistically distort an image, use the liquify filter. But remember, a little goes ALONG way.

you kind of want a volumetric fog effect i think. google "volumetric fog photoshop" for a load of tutorials.
