hey all,
walked into my room before to find a burning smell, gf checked the aquarium, i check the MP, the aquarium was fine.
Turned off the MP and removed hard-drives one by one, they were fine, optical drives were fine, memory risers were fine, Power Supply STANK like burning toast(no, toast wasn't running).
Machine seems fine, power supply has always made a buzz and i told apple about it when i called about something else and the dickhead told me that it couldn't be, hopefully it was noted just incase warranty is up.
Any ideas or similar problems experienced?
Cheers,
itsallinurhead

It could be an electrical component failing or a short circuit. Either way
Buzzing + Burning Smell /= Good
Bring it to the Apple Store you do not want to risk an over voltage to your motherboard or other components, tanking your entire system. If you bought an extended warranty or the Mac under a year old then you are still covered.

This is a known issue with a small number of the 2006 Mac Pros.
I'm sure it has been discussed in this forum before.
Google is your friend :)

even after a year, and while the machine is sleeping? assuming this is the thermal paste issue...

In the case of a non dying PSU, the buzzing can simply be an inductor (if it's PSU related, usually a choke coil) that has a loose winding. If thats the case the humming is harmless.

If I recall correctly, the burning acrid smell reported by 2006/2007 MP owners was invariably due to the Power Supply Unit.
