Fellow MacRumors members,
I love the iPod and want to get one for a family member for Christmas. I'm a poor student, however, and wanted to go with the 5 GB as it's the cheapest and 5 GB of music is A LOT!
Any advise on where to look/ what to do??

apple sometimes has refurbished products so you might look there, otherwise your best bet is eBay. i sold my 5gig when the third gen came out for $190.

PowerMax (http://www.powermax.com/cgi-global/generate_css_temp.cgi?p=a-f8697ll%2Fa-ref) has 5GB for $169.

Oh....this is cool....
Anyone know how these things hold up after being used? Ive been wanting an iPod, but the price has been too high. A used one could be a good choice for me.

Well, i've had my 1st gen 5 gig for 19 months now, and it works like new. And the battery life is still 11+ hours on continuous play. Except for a few scuffs on the face, it's *better* than when I took it out of the box (since apple's firmware updates have helped battery life).
