Can anyone let me know their opinion regarding the macBook upgrading in June? Is it worth the wait? I am hoping for LED screen and possibly WiMax capability. Anyone want to take a crack at what might come out? I am getting too anxious and want to know if I should wait. This will be my first Mac. I am liiking at the Blk. MacBook.

Considering the MacBooks were just updated, I'd say a June update is pretty unlikely. And I wouldn't hold my breath for WiMax if I were you.

Mac books are often updated for the start of the school year. A refresh around late august/ early September is more likely than June. We might see multitouch gestures next time round and some speed increases but not much more.

I concur. I bought the MB 2.16GHz 120GB in August '07, thinking that would be the latest and greatest for the Fall '07 semester. When Spring '08 semester rolled around I was able to get my hands on the BlackBook 2.4GHz Penryn. It's a tough call, but either way you're looking at an awesome MB!

No, laptops are typically updated AFTER the "back-to-school" rush, which is convenient for clearing out stock. iPods tend to get updated after that off to college buying season as well.

I'm in the exact same position as you. First mac also and am eyeing the blackbook. I probably will end up waiting until the next update even though I would love to join the mac community now. I know technology will alwasy be advancing but I know I would be pretty mad if I bought my first mac and they updated it in 2 months. Good thing I don't have enough money to buy one yet! Good luck

I guess i rather wait and suffer a little now and not when i miss out on a possible update in June. I will buy in june. It seems as though buying the latest mac is like hitting a moving target. I almost want to wait till September but NO WAY! June it is. Good Luck to you and all!

If you're expecting an update in June you'll be waiting a while. There are zero signs of any sort of update in two months. Plus, all laptops were JUST updated...you're not going to get updated laptops every four months. If you want a MacBook get one, else you may as well wait forever because machines are ALWAYS being updated so you'll NEVER have the "latest and greatest".

I was a big person on waiting...now I suggest DONT WAIT apple always let me down and I just missed out on having a great machine, most case it will be a minor speed boost go get your new mac and enjoy it!

Wasn't the macbook updated in November 2007 and also 3 months later in February 2008? So, an update in June/July/August (4/5/6 months later) wouldn't surprise me...

Yes, all except the very real fact that Intel will begin phasing out the current chips once the new ones come out in June. Face facts folks, Apple is now running on Intel's clock. Like it or not Intel now controls Apple's game.

Well I wonder if they are going to do something with the Back to school thing. Instead of the time between products look when they are released. For the past couple years they have been released in May or April. Do you think it will change? I hope not, it seems like they will release as a start to the back to school campaign. (I mean its not like they haven't done minor updates in three months before :p)
I wouldn't wait until June if you need or want one now.
I am a first time mac user myself since this month.
I didn't need a new PC/notebook back in November. Then I went on some trips and I did miss a notebook for on the road.
I think I could not have waited until June, so it was perfect for me that they released new ones in February. I got me one a week after it's release (when I got back from my journey), and I didn't regret it so far. The Macbook really is a great machine!
I don't think there will be much more than minor updates the next time. LED would be nice of course, but I wouldn't wait just for that.
ralex
Apr 1, 2008, 07:00 PM
well i really don't need one right away. I have a deskyop at work and an older laptop and desktop at home, all PC - sucks! If they just give the MacBook the LED, keyboard, and multi-touch pad, it will be worth the wait. Also, the chip and processor is supposed to be updated soon from what I hear. We can only hope.

Expecting LED, the backlit keyboard, and multi-touch is too much. Expect one, hope for two.

IMHO I predict an update for the Macbooks in Late July/August. LED backlit screens are long overdue, and Montevina is released in June. I expect:
LED Screens
Montevina upgrade
Lighter and thinner notebook
(Not drastically but a little lighter seeing as there isn't much difference between a macbook and a macbook pro in weight, yet not as light as the MBA. Maybe 4.5 lbs)
Multi-touch
If you're a student, then I would definitely recommend waiting unless you really need it now.
illidian

Lighter and thinner notebook
I'm not sure this is going to happen. Montevina will give Apple the capability to do so, but a case redesign is a big deal (and the MBP needs one more than the MB). I'm not sure if Apple will slim down the MacBook without doing a complete overhaul.
If you're a student, then I would definitely recommend waiting unless you really need it now.
I definitely agree with this. There's no reason to buy new at this time if you're a student. The benefits of waiting until summer are huge.

i really think that apple wont update anything in june. i think they have iphone and imac and imac mini buisness to deal with first.
i also think that even if the montevina rolls around and apple does change the chips or what ever i dont think they will redesign the mbp or mb just due to the fact that what evidence is around to support that montevina will be small enough or be so much of a hardware change that it would make apple redesign the case. i could be wrong but its my opinion.
if there a update i think its gonna come in jan 09!!!!! yeaaaaaa!. the same year i will be getting a mac pro just cuz i want to wait till then really!.
just get a macbook pro i mean i was once thinking about weather or not i should get one but i got one and im happy:cool:

all i really want to see is led screen and backlit keyboard. I dont really care for multitouch if its there thats cool but i dont really care if they do not put it in the next revision
sure, that would be nice, especially with the MacBook price tag. But then, where would be the difference between the MB and MBP, except bigger screen, graphics card and more ports?
But I still think they but LED into the next revision. But the other two..no. Or not yet in 08.
I wanted to wait for LED because it's power efficient. Then they came out with the multitouch trackpad and I thought "sweet", but I don't really need it. What I need is a small and fast machine like the MB.
But yeah, if you're a student and you can wait, then wait until summer. I almost would have, but I was in need for a new computer now.

Apr 2, 2008, 05:46 AM
I'm going with the opinion of waiting. Eventhough i am not a student and I currently have PCs at home and work, I want the MacBook. It is a want and not a need. That said, I could really wait till June or Jan 09. I just want a mac because I heard so many good things about them. All I have now are PCs:(
So I guess I will see what happens in June and them decide if I want to wait till fall etc. I just love all the bells and whistles and do not want to regret not waiting.

But if you are a student, like myself, and planning on buying a laptop for college, should I wait until an update is released, is there likely to be one before the end of August? I need a laptop for college so I'll need one before I go in August, wait for an update or buy as soon as back to school program starts?

Correct me if I am wrong, but the macbook was only just updated. On February 26th. So it is unlikely to be updated again by June. That is only 2 months away now. So I would go with buying now, and enjoying it for even longer.
I just bought my first macbook, so I am going to say buy now. But I think i made the right choice. Otherwise you'll be waiting most of the year.
Hope this helps.

I guess it could be. But I have read that it is unlikely that they will update them again by June. They usually take longer than that. There is a good buyers guide on here. For macbook's it's http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#MacBook. The average life is said to be 192 days. that would take it beyond June.
But who knows what they will do. Updates will happen whenever they want them too.

While looking at the past is typically a good start for predicting the future, there is more evidence pointing to a June (or at least a summer release) than against it. There are several threads going on in the Buying Tips section of these forums to substantiate this claim.

I think I will buy it this weekend! I am done with the waiting game. You are all right. I would have to wait 2 1/2 months or so to possibly get an updated MacBook. If they do update it in June, July, or even August, I will then give this one to my 14 year old daughter and buy another one. I even have the 4GB RAM in my closet to add to the MacBook so it will run 2.4Ghz with 4GB RAM. That should be fast enough for a novice like myself.
I will ask a favor from this group. Please let me know your opinion. Do I buy now? Yes or No???

I think you should buy it now. I just got my MacBook on Thursday and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. It's very light, beautiful, and it's much faster than I expected. I haven't even touched my iMac since the MB has come and I don't think I will be using it near as much anymore.

Without digging thins up for links...
-Apple was not ready for the February release. But Intel pushed their new model on Apple. The last update was premature for Apple
-Intel has yet another new product coming in June
It's not that information from Apple has been leaked for the "evidence" here. We know when Intel will be forcing Apple into making a new model. Can Apple lag behind by a few months? Yea, but they cannot afford to wait any longer than that.

So you are saying we will see a new MacBook in June?
Okay. We all have different opinions about this idea of "OH, will we really see this new MB in June?!?" The answer is... we don't know.
That is purely a rumor. If Apple could lag behind a few months on their previous update, so could they with the next one. Maybe with this in mind, Apple might do the same with the release of Moniteva (this June) even LATER! That means we might see this new MB update in Sept or Oct, after the back to school deals. But don't take my word for it, that is only my opinion.
So it's all up to you if you really need it now or not. Ask yourself that, and keep in mind that patience is a virtue...

It always amazes me how people agonise over buying machines, and need to justify. For what its worth here's my thoughts, hope it helps....
Remembers that whatever, and whenever you buy, it will be out of date within 3-6 months. I've been in the IT industry for 20 years and its been the same for the whole of that time...and it probably will be for the next 20.
So ask yourself these questions....
What do I need it to do?
When do I need to do it?
How much money do I have to spend?
How long will I keep it?
Then buy the machine that fits the bill.
If you need the machine now, buy it. If you don't need it, wait and buy the machine that fits the bill when you do need it.
If you just want the machine now then fine, I think we can all relate to that(!), so give into the temptation and have fun. If money isn't an issue then just buy the latest and greatest when it comes out in a few months. Remember Macs hold their value much better than PC's you've only got to look at Ebay and see the prices that 2 year old machines are still achieving, so it won't cost you a lot to upgrade.
To answer the original questions, will we see a MB upgrade in June. Possibly. Intel seem to be aggressively rolling out new chipsets and Apple seem to be following suit at the moment, that's why we saw the Penryn update, but will another chip update really make a difference to your use?
I needed to buy a new machine in the last month as a change of job saw me lose my HP laptop. It was just after the Penryn update arrived. So, I bought a refurb SR 2.2 Blackbook. Why? It fits the bill perfectly and I saved some 30% of the price of a Penryn. Do I notice the difference in power? Nope, goes very well for what I need it to, especially with the 4GB RAM I added for next to nothing. The 160GB drive is fine for me. Do I miss the extra battery life? Well I'm getting over 4 hours of use from each charge which is plenty thank you very much......
Will June see a lighter redesigned MB with LED screen, backlit keyboards and multi-touch? Personally I doubt it, as you have to consider the Apple laptop product range. There are three separate products here and each have their own markets and unique selling points. The MB already looks extremely good value compared with the Air and the MBP, and Apple will continue to differentiate their product lines in order to maintain healthy sales and profit margins. If Apple offered an Aluminium MB with LED, backlit keyboards, multitouch etc etc, then how many people would buy these instead of the not-as-well-specced-but-slightly-lighter-but-costs-twice-as-much-Air? Loads, thats how many, and Apple just aren't going to do that.....
....until, they further differentiate the Air and the MBP with the next set of innovations/upgrades. Then we will see all of these features arrive on the MB I am sure. Of course, all of this is personal opinion - if Apple did add all these things in June I'd happily eat my words and be first in the queue - at least I'd be able to sell my Blackbook for nearly what I paid for it!
So, best wishes, buy your Mac when you are ready and enjoy it. You will not look back!

Okay let me tell you what I'm thinking:
I need a laptop for college so I was at least planning on waiting until the Back to School thing starts. For me I would like an update because if I can wait I might as well, but if they don't update before I need to buy it I will be angry because that is a set of time I could have used to enjoy my new laptop and get it ready for college. So to me its a probability thing, is it worth the gamble to get a better laptop by waiting or risk not getting an update and being able to enjoy it. I know it seems trivial but I hope someone can see it from my point of view. I just don't want my wait to not be worth it. I hate being tied to a desktop all of the time.

It's really unlikely that the MacBook will be refreshed by the time you buy in June. What is much more likely is you will wait and buy in June, and then it will be updated a month after that, and you'll be even more unhappy.

This is another reason why I buy refurbished products. They're already out of date, so you aren't spending the full amount on a MacBook. Plus, they come with the same warranty and the only difference is the box they ship in.
Example, a new base model MacBook is $1099 (or $999 with edu discount) and a refurbished 2GHz Santa Rosa model is $849. The difference there is $250. Add 4GB of RAM = $100 and a new 250GB HD = $120. Right there you still save $30 and have more RAM and a larger HD. If you use edu pricing, you pay $70 more for upgrades but end up getting a better computer. That's just an example of base models.
The refurbished BlackBook is $1049, which is an extraordinary deal. The difference in power between refurb and the new Penryn's are not extremely noticeable unless you really push the limits of your computer.

My thoughts exactly, I have to have my MB to me by August so I can have it ready for the new university year. To be fair, I'm not too bothered if a simple speed bump comes in June, as I'm upgrading to 4gb which is more than enough. I'm only worried about the chance of an LED screen and redesigned case, which I would hate to miss out on!

Buy now and enjoy it! They only updated in february, so you will get a pretty much up to date model. That's what I did and I love it. It's my first mac, and I don't think an update to the processor could make this much better at all. That's presuming it even updates by August. Which, in my opinion, seems unlikely.
So...that's what I think. Buy and enjoy! You won't regret it at all.

Im getting my first blackbook the first day of back to school regardless of an update. A minor speed bump late in summer wont really bother me. The only thing i would really like would be the LED screen, and i dont see much point in multitouch. And a case redesign wont bother me either...what else can they do to make these machines look better than they already do?

Relax, take a deep breath, and wait until June. Your money isn't going anywhere. :D

Out of interest (and desperation) can anybody remember when the February updates were announced? Or for that matter any previous updates. Might give us a better idea of when the next changes could be announced.

Just get a MacBook now, or at least as soon as you have the money. Even if a new revision comes out in June, I doubt it will be all that great. It's not like a MacBook built on May 31 is hugely technically inferior to the one built on June 1. Both will still be great machines that will last for years.
I, too, was going to wait for a new MacBook this June, but instead bought the "BlackBook" just before Christmas, and I'm very satisfied with it. No, it doesn't have the latest and greatest processor, or the latest and greatest speed bumps, but you know what? Who cares? It still has a fast Santa Rosa processor, and it still runs great. That's all that matters.

The Macbook update was not announced before release.

hi.
it's really simple, if you need one right now then go ahead and buy yourself a MB, the Mbs that are being offered right now by Apple are just great, if you buy one, I suggest u take the middle one with 2.4ghz.
on the other hand if u can wait and aren't really in the need of buying one right now, then u should defineately wait. because if Apple should update the MBs it'll probably go into the Pro look with Aluminum casing :D :apple:

Now I can say in light of recent events you should definitely wait.

I agree, now more than ever I suggest you wait. Looks as if a new MB might not be too far away
