Appleinsider reports (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/03/31/apple_encountering_ongoing_us_wide_iphone_shortage.html) that the supply of iPhones across the U.S. are near sold-out.The sudden shortfall has been further confirmed by reports from AppleInsider readers. In several cases, their own investigations reported all stores in a given state running out, including Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Many if not all AT&T stores were also said to have run out of inventory.
The exact cause for the shortage is unknown, but could obviously represent short supply or significant demand.

I've also not been able to find a single iPod Touch (besides the occasional 32gigger) in Sydney either in the last week. I have been keen to buy as I have a gift voucher but to no avail. An alternate explanation might be a shortage of flash memory again....
But a coincidence and new model iPhones would be better...

TAIPEI -(Dow Jones)- Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (2317.TW), the world's largest contract electronics maker, plans to ship at least 10 million third-generation iPhones for Apple Inc. (AAPL), a person familiar with the situation told Dow Jones Newswires.
The person, who declined to be named, said Apple will likely launch the new generation iPhone as early as the second quarter.
"Hon Hai is ready to ship anytime. It is just waiting for the nod from Apple," said the person.
Last week, another person familiar with the situation told Dow Jones Newswires that Hon Hai had received an exclusive contract to make an advanced version of the iPhone.
Apple spokeswoman Jill Tan declined to comment Tuesday.
Apple, like many other big personal-computer and consumer-electronics brands, doesn't actually make most of its products. It hires manufacturing specialists - mainly companies from Taiwan that have extensive operations in China - to assemble its gadgets based on Apple's designs. They use parts from other outside suppliers, many of which also are from Taiwan and elsewhere in Asia.
Bank of America said in a recent note that Apple is expected to launch a high- speed wireless version of the iPhone in the second quarter and produce as many as 8 million of the devices in the third quarter.

A shortage nationwide? I can't see how a manufacturer as big as Apple (and it's suppliers) would let that happen. I'd say something is coming. Very soon.

what time would stores go down? in this case it would be UK and USA , Germany and France?
And if a 3G one was gonna come out any time soon why did they launch in Austria and Ireland a few days ago? To make products which wont get sold?

Maybe Apple is moving inventory overseas in anticipation of a US refresh (overseas to follow)?
The US online Apple store says 'ships in 5-7 days' whereas (as someone noted) the UK says 'ships within 24 hours'.
Does seem odd, and although a US only update would kill sales overseas in the short term, it could be part of a roll out strategy. A 3G update doesn't mesh with the '3 new ads' for the existing phone though, sadly.
Certainly won't help sales figures if it's a genuine shortage due to lack of supply.

Lots of companies have shipment shortages between manufacturing batches. I don't think this is anything to interesting.
The 16GB version was just released so Apple will likely want to suck all of those people dry before releasing the new model in June.

We all know the roadmap and I'm sure they won't refresh the iPhone now, and if they do it'll be minor. (Meaning everything stays the same except they add 3G or GPS or larger drives)

You need to remember though that Apple likes 6PM for some strange reason. So it is Tuesday, it is Apples birthday, there is an alleged/apparent/created/ shortage of iPhones.
But then again the 3G iPhone it to big of a deal to just drop without a big Steve-O-thon. Then again he could appear on live TV of something.
But I am not one to never say never.

Of course there are no iPhones left in the US - that's because we all come over from Europe and buy-up all the stock.
This also explains why they don't sell in UK, a lot cheaper to get one from The States.
Seriously though, I've had two people try to buy one in US stores in recent months and the stores were a) low on stock in all cases and b) full of Europeans buying iPhones and iPods...

Sorry to sound like a pessimist but i really dont think it would be feasible for apple to launch iPhone 2 till december... i still stick strongly to my point that if it was coming out THEY WOULD NOT HAVE RELEASED IT IN AUSTRIA AND IRELAND TILL V2 COMES OUT AS THEY WOULD HAVE TO GET RID OF 2.5G EDGE STOCK FIRST WHICH TAKES TIME , obviously not three monthss.....

OH HANG ON , not to mention that they would really annoy the german and irish population who purchased iPhone, as they would feel cheated...
there is something called weighing the situation out and not just hoping that apple will release a product when you feel you want it.... sorry if this sounds rude but you guys need to analyze the situation before making such sweeping statements r profound decisions to that apple will release them in June.
I also beg you to note that apple very rarely update products in certain markets where products exist and not others... THIS WOULD MAKE CUSTOMERS UPSET AND ANGRY, and guess what the customer is always right

Arn's 4-1 warning note specifically states to look for page format differences to differentiate. For god's sake, have some fun today!
This has also been widely confirmed and reported, starting days ago...
I'd say it's just a normal ebb and flow within the iPhone's supply/demand curve. Apple is always careful not to glut their products. A mild, brief shortage is much better for them financially in the long run than a glut. Take the AT&T sale that put the $250 refurbed 8GB iPhones on the net for the first time... by all appearances from the thread on MR, a fairly large number of people besides me jumped on that deal, and AT&T sold them very quickly.
So my personal take is that they'll be available in reasonable quantity within the next few days, and this has little or no bearing on the timing of a 3G iPhone.... The latter will come; I just don't think this is an indicator of it.

I was in one of the Apple stores in Orlando early last week and they were out. They also said that pretty much all of Florida is out of iPhones.

will simply be a refresh of stock - MAYBE a minor update such which may only take effect to USA as their iPhone stocks are low, perhaps even maybe 3g might come to USA ONLY but not others till stock is depleted AS THE iPHONE IS TOO NEW IN CERTAIN COUNTRIES....
IS APPLE ABLE TO CHANGE A PRODUCT IN CERTAIN PARTS OF THE WORLD AT DIFFERENT TIMES OR IS THIS UNCOMMON PRACTICE?

You know it's funny that you said this. No ****, the store I was in had a Euro trying to buy a phone to work in Germany. The Apple store employee said not only did we not have any iPhone in stock at this time but the phone that you buy here will NOT work overseas on their network. Unless you want to pay roaming charges. So I don't think it is Euros buying them up.

As much as I hate to be the voice of reason...
Apple is intentionally hording their stash of iPhones in the U.S. becuase be making the iPhone avaliable in very limited quantities they create mass hysteria for the iPhone. Then when they make the product easy to get a hodl of again they will be bought up quickly. Then they will truly sell out and stock will truly be non-existant. That is when we will see the iPhone 3G.

Isn't a surprise 3g phone update impossible? Would a 3g iphone have to go before the FCC where apple can't keep it secret a few months before release?
Isn't that why the iphone originally was announced long before it was released (unlike most apple products?)

Even though they maybe running out of stock they will replenish it.... They replenish stock when customers are desperate and know will get sold out quickly.. But the next batch wont be 3G. I still dont know how they can launch a new product
a)in three months, when only 2 months or so back they dropped the iPod touch 32GB and iPhone 16GB.
b)Annoy people in Austria and Ireland who will be three months into their mighty expensive contracts and feel sad that a new product is launched and will not be able to buy it.
3)People are still on their first contract ever in all countries.. perhaps they will do this on a day when most users have finished their first iPhone contract.
4)Maybe they will make a 3G iPhone 32GB Yankie-edition and the rest of the world as USA finished their stock...
5)Maybe the stock in Ireland and Austria is very limited just to test waters before 3G..

apple wouldnt allow a shortage of iphones to take place unless they were going to reduce new models, they need to sell every unit they can, and every unit sold has a possible chance of being activated with at&t and thats revenue apple neeeeeed

"Effect" can also be a verb.
The CEO effected change by creating an atmosphere of cooperation.
"Effect" as a verb means "to bring about" as opposed to "affect" which means "to make a difference in some way."
I'm sure you are all impressed by my Webster's quality definitions... not!
