Now when i restart my computer and hold alt instead of discs to boot from coming up a padlock does, i did not set a password but i was fiddling with some kind of app i found on my machine, i installed a package but i dont know where it went 🙁 ..... its a brand new machine and no one else would have set it , is there some kind of DEFAULT password ??

Sounds like you found the Open Firmware Password Utility on your restore disks. To remove the password, just boot into OSX, and insert your Restore disk. Run the application from the disk and uncheck the "Require password to change Open Firmware settings" box. That should fix your problem.
