iPod touch touch won't sync with address book

hi guys
my 16Gig ipod touch has just stopped syncing with address book after 3 months of no problems.
trying to sync just resets the ipod and leaves address book untouched.

i've restored ipod software, and trashed address book plists: no help.

i do have a pretty big address book file: 2500 contacts, total file size 20Meg.
i am putting lots of data in the "notes" section of each vcard, and i am adding cards all the time.

is the sheer size of the address file a problem?
