View Full Version : Who else here hates Photoshop Elements 6?

I'm not that crazy about Elements 6... I think it pretty much sucks:
1. It's not very Mac-like... it's more like using a Windows app... very messy interface.
2. The dark gray is bothering me (and I can't seem to find out how to remove the gray area that covers the entire desktop!)
3. There's no customization options in the preferences like CS3 has (interface color slider?) anywhere.
4. The icon is worse than the CS3 icon set! (I did not think that was possible).
5. The default startup splash screen is worse than the icon (I changed it to a rectangle) http://macthemes2.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=16785143
6. I can't hit cmd-H to hide it... what the hell? All other apps use this command...
Anyone else feel like I do? I know I'm a little bit of an extremist but, what can I say... I'm kind of picky. Also, I'm coming from knowing and being VERY comfortable with Photoshop CS3 (or any Pro Photoshop) but, I got Elements to use at home since I didn't really feel like spending the cash on Photoshop (I do much less image manipulation at home because I do it all day at work... hehe.)
Anyways... those are my complaints. I'd like to hear from others.

this is my first photoshop program. i love it. sounds like you are just upset about cosmetics..?? the program works great and does more than i thought i could ever do. i think thats the way you should judge an app, not because you don't like its icon or background color

Since it's your first Photoshop, that's fine... it's probably the best thing since sliced bread to you. However, I've been using the pro Photoshop for years and I know that Elements does not = Pro, but this is the worse Elements of all the Elements before it... they don't give you any control over anything. If I had the money, I'd buy Photoshop CS3 but, I don't.

He's not complaining about the aesthetics so much as the fact that it doesn't look mac. That's an important factor when you've spent thousands of dollars to get away from windows and its ugliness. The fact that he spent like, 70 bucks or in that range to get a program where the programmers couldn't be bothered to add standard code to do a CMD+H (hide) is laughable.
This is why I use GIMP. Free, and I don't expect good looks or performance.

I'll confess I've ALWAYS disliked Photoshop Elements, and will use just about anything else in preference if I don't have access to a full version of Photoshop.
Current fave cheapie is Pixelmator, but I'll confess to still using TIFFany 3 for a lot of home projects....

I tried using Pixelmator but, there are still a lot of inconsistencies and easy stuff that should be very simple... is much harder in Pixelmator.

I kind of agree with those points, I think it's uglier than v2.0 that I upgraded from. I don't like light text on dark background personally.
I was deeply concerned the about the 'full screen mode' when I saw screenshots before release... happily all you have to do is uncheck Preferences> General> Fill workspace background.
5. The default startup splash screen is worse than the icon (I changed it to a rectangle) http://macthemes2.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=16785143
To be honest, I like the circle. But it's such a small thing I wouldn't care if I hated it, it's on the screen for about about 2 seconds...
6. I can't hit cmd-H to hide it... what the hell? All other apps use this command...
Look in the Photoshop Elements menu dude, ^(ctrl)+command+H hides it. command+H is view selection (I agree it's stupid, they should swap those around)
------
So I don't really like the new look, but overall I think it's still a really great app, and I can't even begin to understand how anyone can think Pixelmator is as mature or useful an app (*yet* at least, it does have potential for future versions and is nice to have as well). I do feel like there isn't a great deal of improvements over my old version, but I needed a universal + leopard compatible one, so it was a must-buy for me.
One bug that sucks a lot is when setting the delay for animated Gifs in the save for web screen.... you can't click on it, and you have to tab through the boxes to change it... I think it's fairly shocking that they've broken something that worked fine years ago...
For the money though, it's a wonderful app I think.

Woah! Thanks for the tip!
Now, I have a new problem... how do I get rid of the project bin? I know how to hide it but, there's still a strip at the bottom of my screen that is bothering me.

i guess your right..i have been only using iphoto from day one, so yeah this app is pretty sweet for me, but now i guess i understand what you mean, but again you did only pay like $80 for it, not 500 or more for the full out version

I don't know, sorry. I'd like to get rid of it too though.

Why are apps for the public getting dumber and dumber? iMovie 08, PSE6, FCE, etc... :(
All I know is that Adobe just doesn't "get" the consumer market. PSE has been a hog from day one, and I keep wanting something a little more clean and less resource-intensive. That's why I get PSE instead of PS. As was mentioned in another thread, maybe Apple needs to look at this segment. Not that I don't appreciate the power or capability, but honestly, I don't have the time to ramp up to the skill level demanded for full use & value of even PSE.
