I think I shall have to buy a new scanner, and I am having my focus on the "Canon" brand. However, I am given to understand that one should be cautious in as much as most scanners are basicly made for Windows, and it may be difficult to get Mac-drivers. Any advice in this regard would be much appreciated.

I have a Canon multifunction machine (includes scanner) and it works fine wih the Mac. Drivers were not a problem. If I needed one, it was available on the Canon website. Go there and check out the support page for the scanner you are thinking about before you buy it.
