View Full Version : Laptop chips: 180, 150 or 130nm

It is well known that the Powerbooks have 512k L2 cache, and the G4 iBook 256k L2 cache. But is that where the differences stop?

This particular question is relating to the size of the die on which the chips are produced. Are the PB G4 chips produced on a 0.13micron die, while the iBook's are on 0.15 or 0.18 micron die? Or are they both produced on the same size chip.

Are there any other differences in these chips? Since getting a straight answer out of motorola is like trying to draw blood from a stone.

the smaller the chip the less power it uses and they can crank up the mhz because of this. Which why intels new 3ghz plus chips are 0.9nm

I know, but that relates to my question how? I'm just curious about the G4 laptop chips in this case.

And the intel chips aren't on 90nm cores yet anyway. That is what the Prescott core is rumored to be.

Anyways, the G4's used in the newest Powerbooks are the 7447/57. These are Moto's latest G4's and are produced with the 13 micron process. Previous generations of Powerbooks used the 7445/55 and used an 18 micron process. The G4 iBook are using the 7445/55 chip.

Current Powerbooks are 130nm 9 LM SOI (7447), Current iBooks are 180nm 6LM SOI (7445 probably).

Itís not a rumor, it's a fact, Prescott is 90nm. The G4 in the PB line is .13 and the iBook is .18. The iMac is also still at .18 as is the eMac.

According to these pages, recent revision of 7445 is fabricated at MOS13.

I don' t know what revision is on iBook G4.

Wow, it does indeed claim that. Very interesting! If the iBook is using 130nm 7445's that makes it much more attractive.
