And you are only just noticing because ...
I thought this was pretty much common knowledge and there have been plenty of studies done in the past on this matter. The one I remember was to do with accents and the likelihood of passing an interview.

So is brummie kind like the redneck accent of the UK?
I feel stereotyped when I go to California and people there ask me to say "Wal-Mart". ***holes. I shop at Sams, thank you.

It makes me rather glad that I don't have a "Southern" accent despite living here all my life.

Could be worse. You know the reaction a Merseyside accent gets :)

You might be thick, but at least you are funny (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/west_midlands/5271182.stm)
And did you know Latin comes from Birmingham (http://youtube.com/watch?v=O_5kIkXwkoU&feature=related)?

It makes me rather glad that I don't have a "Southern" accent despite living here all my life.I feel quite the opposite, and feel strangely empowered as I wrap up my doctorate studies with my southern accent still intact.

Are you referring to Sam's Club? Wal-Mart owns Sam's, right? So what is the big difference really?

As the article clearly states...
They compared the Yorkshire accent with those from Birmingham... with the Yorkshire accent being rated the highest.
You can't argue with science. It's official – we're better than the rest of you put together. ;)

Yeah, lest anyone think I'm picking on Alabamians, I did spend the first 27 years of my life there. I lost most of the accent in college, so the only people who make fun of my accent these days are my relatives.
