Hi all,

I just got new penryn 15" MBP. I want to transfer all my previous emails on my old computer to Mail. I have Mac OS 10.3.9 on my old 12" and so I'm not sure how I go about tranferring all those thousands of emails. I tried just using target disk mode and dragging and dropping all my old Mail files to replace the "new" Mail files, but that didn't work. Also I seem to be having trouble with key shortcuts. For example, I can't use expose with the F9, F10, etc keys. They just mute, increase the volume, etc. I've tried changing it so that the shortcut includes the command key. So it would be command F10. That also didn't work. Does anyone have any suggestions or know why this is happening? Trying to activate spaces also gives me the same headache. I know this is a pseudo MBP topic, so I'm sorry if it's a bit misplaced.

I can't help with the mail transfer, but I think that the key problem can be resolved by going into system Preferences>Keyboard settings. it should be somewhere in there. I don't have a mac yet so i can't verify, mine's arriving next week...

dashboard/spaces prefs for the expose issues

as for the mail, did you transfer your com.apple.mail.plist file over.?

I'd use migration assistant rather than try to find everything manually.

Asuming your using the default MAIL client as found in Mac OSX, then it's a simple matter of copying a folder and some files...

~ = home

~/Library/Mail (contains all your emails)
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (application settings)

~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
(contains all your log-ins and passwords)

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.searchhistory.plist
(optional - mail searches you've performed)

(if you have copies already on your new Mac, just delete them
and replace them with the one your copying... )

That's about it... :)

Oh for Keyboard Settings and Shortcuts, try the following:

system preferences → Keyboard & Mouse → Keyboard Shortcuts

Chances are they might not be correctly set or enabled.
