Hey i'm new to raiding but can I raid with different hard drives or do they all have to be the same?

You can use different drives - even different sizes - but it's not recommended.

Tom's Hardware (http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/245367-32-heterogeneous-raid-arrays-work) just did an article on it and their conclusion was that you can.
