View Full Version : Gimp won't run on Leopard.

Hey all - Downloaded the Gimp yesterday, latest Leopard version from Wilbur. Downloaded newest X11 and installed, confirmed, it's in the right place and working.
Attempts to load the Gimp instantly return a message saying the Gimp crashed and burned, report, ignore, etc..
I read a little more, attempted to 'reinstall' the 10-5.2 'Combo Update' - Downloaded it, it won't install and says that the HD does not meet the requirements. I suspect this is because the 10.5.2 is already installed, which of course it is, from back in March..
I could get one step closer if someone could tell me how to Uninstall that original Combo Update on a machine with no Time Machine running.
HALPS!! Thanks.

GIMP is nor a universal binary application. Before corrupting your operating system, why don't you consider a better alternative. If you can't afford Photoshop or Photoshop elements, there is another alternative:

You have to make sure you have Gimp 2.4 (http://www.gimp.org/downloads/) for Leopard. Version 2.2 crashes on startup in exactly the way you describe.

I do have 2.4 - got it straight from Wilbur LOves Apple yesterday. In reading the directions for installing it, it says you may need to re-install the combo update.. Oh well.. Not sure what to do, I'm fluent in the gimp and really like how it works.. Now I can't use it..
With regards to Photoshop, I'm sure it's a nice program. I have tried the Pixelmator but was unable to use the 'clone' tool so I bailed on it. I tried that yesterday after jerking around with Gimp all afternoon.. Any tips on how to use the clone tool?
EDIT: FYI - You linked me to the Gimp for Windows 2.4 download. But here is the one I downloaded.. http://darwingimp.sourceforge.net/download.html The first one, 2.4.5 for 24" iMac / alum/glass

Could it be a fonts issue? I've had those before with all sorts of apps.

Did you checkout GImp forums to see if other users are experiencing the same troubles?

I wish I could help you with this issue, I can only say that I am currently running a fully updated 10.5.2 on a Macbook Pro with the latest version of GIMP just fine. It's a particular problem that you have, the version *should* be okay. The suggestion about fonts being an issue is a possibility, as I had crash after crash in an older version of Inkscape whenever I would try to use text (this may have been an X11 issue as well). Good luck

GIMP not being universal is irrelevant, since there are PPC and Intel builds; the Intel build runs just fine on Leopard on my MBP, as does the PPC version on my PB.

Your welcome,
Your critical and sarcastic remark was very helpful.

Installing GIMP 2.4 does not CORRUPT your OS. :p
I have GIMP 2.4 installed with X11 from the Leopard installation DVD and the latest X11 package release from the Xquartz Project and it works just fine. I did have a problem with GIMP when I first upgraded from Tiger to Leopard as I did not have the most recent version of GIMP (GIMP 2.4 (http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/)) installed.
When I first upgraded to GIMP 2.4 it still didn't work. From what I've read Apple changed the implementation of X11 in Leopard. This Leopard and X11 FAQ (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=80171) was very helpful.
What I did to get things working was to follow the last entry in that Leopard and X11 FAQ, which is FAQ #43 on page #3.
Delete pretty much all X11 from you system, and let it forget its receipts:
sudo rm -rf /usr/X11 /usr/X11R6
sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.X11DocumentationLeo
sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.X11User
sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.X11SDKLeo
sudo pkgutil --forget org.x.X11.pkg
Install X11User.pkg from Leopard's installation DVD, which is in /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/Optional Install/Optional Installs.mpkg
Install X11SDK.pkg from Leopard's installation DVD, which is in /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/Optional Installs/Xcode Tools/Packages/
Install the latest X11 package (http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/xquartz/wiki/Releases) release from the Xquartz Project.
Once I completed the above four steps my X11 works correctly and GIMP works correctly.
Hope this helps.

No need to delete X11. Just install the latest version of Xquartz.
Gimp 2.4.5 works perfectly on my Mac running 10.5.2 with all the latest updates.

Who is "Wilber"? Why not get Gimp for www.gimp.org I think what you have here is a "Wilber problem" not a "Gimp problem". Gimp runs just find on all of my computers Linux, Solaris, and Mac OS X (leopard)

Boy, so many misconceptions...
GIMP is not universal, but who cares, there are intel and PPC versions for Tiger and Leopard. Besides, GIMP is a lot more powerful than Pixelmator, even though it does not look as well polished due to X11 requirement.
Wilbur is one of only two places you can get Gimp.app according to the downloads page of "www.gimp.org" unless you'd rather compile from source, which is quite a pain. It is not one of those places where they try to sell you an otherwise free app.
I agree it might be better to post your question on Wilber's forum.

Wilber Loves Apple is the Mac OS X prebuilt binary for Mac OS X. It is just a convenient download rather than having to sod about installing all the libraries required by it and then compiling it yourself.
