So... I just got my new 17" MBP this afternoon and I'm already having buyer's remorse. Long story short - I think 17" is just too big for me. That, and I'm really not sure about the glossy screen. It seemed like a good idea at the time but now I'm having second thoughts.
I'd just return it but it seems that apple considers it custom configured since I went with the high-res screen. Apparently custom configured computers can't be returned... something I probably should have payed more attention to when I ordered it. I keep trying to convince my self to stick with the 17" but the fact that I'm up now worrying about it probably means that I'm never going to be happy. I'm thinking right now that my best bet is to sell it on here and purchase a 15" instead.
Other then the high-resolution glossy screen, it's a stock 17" Penryn MBP which costs $2900 from the apple store. What can I expect on here? Anybody interested in buying it? Shipping would be from North Carolina if that matters.

I've got a sick blackbook I'd trade for it!

I'm not overly interested in trades unless they're for a 15" penryn MBP. I know penryn wasn't that big of an update for most people but the reduced heat of the processor is very important to me. Go ahead and shoot me an offer if you've got something else you might want to trade... it can't hurt, but I'm probably going to have to decline.

OP: I understand your concerns, and have but a suggestion for you. Perhaps give it a few weeks, and see if you still feel it's too much to lug about. If you get a nice backpack or carrying case, it's rather moot, but only you know what works best for you. I would hate for you to trade/sell so soon after purchasing, when you haven't really put it to the test as far as transporting back and forth, when that seems your major issue. If at that time you're still interested in trading/selling, go for it. I may be interested in outright purchase rather than trade. The value (in my eyes) isn't going to decrease with 2 weeks of use, (unless you damage it). Good luck to you on whatever you decide.
I'm in US too, btw.

I think that's what I'm going to do. This morning I decided to take a picture of the machine to put in this thread when I noticed what I thought was a whole clump of dead pixels in the bottom right corner of the screen. It turns out it's a big piece of dust so apple's sending me a new one. They wouldn't let me downgrade to a 15" model but they did let me go with a matte screen instead of the glossy one. It'll be a few days till I get it, and at that point I'll reevaluate whether I want to stick with the big one or sell / trade it for a 15" one.

Did you decide to keep the matte version?

You could just take it back to Apple, as long as you're in the fourteen day return period you can get all of your money back and then buy a 15" MacBook Pro.

(It won't let me use quotes as an entire post )

Did you actually speak to an Apple Rep? No returns? That doesn't seem right. Dell and HP lets you return stuff - and most of their computers are "custom built"
You'd have to eat the 10% return fee, though (pretty hefty on this one).
Edit: I just read their policy (I've only ordered "stock" lately) - bummer... Apple needs to keep up with the competition on this one...
Return and Refund Policy
If you are not satisfied with your Apple purchase of a product, please call 1-800-676-2775 for a Return Material Authorization (RMA) request within 14 calendar days of the receipt of the product. Configure-to-order, personalized or other customized products may not be returned for refund or exchange under any circumstances unless such product is Dead on Arrival (see the section below for more detailed information on such Dead on Arrival products).
Write Steve Jobs' office to complain (compared to other manufacturer's returns on custom computers) and say that you're willing to take the 10% hit and get a gift card refund so you can get the 15" one...

I think I am going to stick with the 17". Now that I'm used to all the extra pixels it would be hard to go back. It's a shame though, as I really miss the portability of my 15" powerbook. I guess everybody has a cutoff for what's portable and what's not. I found the 15" form factor to be significantly easier to carry around then the 17". I guess that's just something I have to put up with though.
Thanks for all the interest. I'll post back here if I change my mind.
