I've got page numbers on my master page. In the document there are different backgrounds on each page – so sometimes I need a light colour number and sometimes a dark one.
Can I change the page number element on different pages without going onto the masterpage? I can't interact with it at the moment.

You'll need to "Override Master Page Items."
Right click on the page in the Pages Palette and click on the above. Or Cmd-Opt-Shift-L. You'll need to do this for each page you want to change. This will make all master page elements changeable, for better or worse.

on each number you want to change, just do a shift+command+click to unlock it from the master, then format it as needed.
