View Full Version : Apple Canada PowerMac G5 Promo
MacRumors
Nov 10, 2003, 11:57 AM
Apple has sent at least some of its Apple Canada customers a special promotion postcards in the mail.
The promotion offers a G5 Test Drive (G5TestDrive.ca (http://www.g5testdrive.ca)) along with a limited edition Apple-branded stopwatch (photo (http://www.chaosmint.com/macintosh/articles/apple-canada-powermac-g5.shtml)) as well as an entry to win a new 1.8GHz G5 PowerMac and a 20inch Apple Cinema Display.
For a limited time, Apple is also offering invitees a $200 discount on a G5/Display/AppleCare bundle.
Again, the offer is only open to direct-mail postcard recipients.

How do you get on the promotion if you've never bought a Mac ?

is it because Panther delivery to Canada was slow??
is it because Apple is receiving too much order for Dual G5 2GHz, and can not produce them as fast as they are ordered...so then promoting lower level G5??

If you want one, go to Compusmart.com and dowload their PDF flyer - details on how to register are there. Everyone who got/gets the flyer can enter.
You have to go into the store to get the watch.
No Compusmart nearby? A quick google turned up a few other auth' resellers that have this special. If you want the watch, finding them is your homework assignment.
The watch is not as cool as it looks - but it is rare Apple swag so its worth collecting.
The contest is cool. My odds of winning just decreased by telling you this, but hey I love you guys.

Maybe it's because Canada is the butt of a lot of jokes, and that Canada is always second to we sometimes snobby Americans
More power to Apple for giving Canada the first go at this.
Remember, we can always buy the stopwatch on eBay if we get desperate enough.
:) :D

That stopwatch reminds me of Nike-branded electronics (mp3 player, watch, etc.). Maybe it's just the display or something.

I've been to compusmart.com and have searched around quite a bit and have not been able to find where you download the pdf flyer from. Can you give me a little more direction lewdvig?

I sometimes wonder how you get on their mailing list, but they most likely have more than one. Besides, I'm probably on at least on of them, since I do get flyvers now and then.
Good to see some Apple love going to Canada, interesting about the display deal, are they getting ready for new displays ? Or am I caught up in wishful thinking ?

OK, so if the Panther dogtags went for like $15-20 on eBay, this means we can expect the stopwatch to go for $70+? Don't laugh. It's eBay, the place where I recoup nearly 100% of my original purchase price on old, outdated technology!!! muahahah!

I registered and received a web page to print off. So I did.
Do I just go to reseller now or will they contact me for a test drive?

Sales are probably slower than Apple would like. I have a suggestion. Drop the price to be fairer, like they did in Europe.
The Dual G5 is US$3000, while in Canada is it CAD$4200. Based on todays currency exchange, that is CAD$264 to much. That is before GST and PST taxes. Even Panther is $9 above what it should be.
You may argue it could be due to higher duties, but Apple seems to have figured the VAT into their European pricing.
At least CDs and DVDs tend to be cheaper in Canada. :D

I've gotten four of the postcard things from four different retailers in Toronto.

An angel was asking god why he gave Canadians a country full of resources and beauty, while leaving so much out from other countries.
Gods answer: Wait until you see the neighbours I give them! :D
Canada. Second to none, and not 'American'. ;)

He he...
I've had one of those stopwatches since the Panther Launch Event. Its beside me right now, and it annoys the hell out of people when the alarm goes off.

I think the watch is as cool as it looks. I want one even tho I have no use for it. It reminds me of those nice skins for Audion.

I don't care how cool it does/doesn't look, I want one! :) (the stopwatch that is)
A G5 would be nice, but overkill for me.

Well I know what I'll be buying when I visit the company store in Cupertino this spring.
The watch not the G5.

Attention seems to be on the watch, etc., but the interesting thing for me is that this can be seen as the *first drop* ($200) on the current display line , clearing room for some new displays - hopefully before Christmas. If this is true then Apple isn't interested in the watches, but in moving some displays fast.
It will be interesting to see if there are other ways of including discounts on packages with current displays coming. Anyone run into any display rumors in the last week or so?
lewdvig
Nov 11, 2003, 09:24 AM
To get the $200 you need to buy a
G5: min $2800
Apple Display: min $1000
Applecare: $350 (or must it be for the PC and monitor?)
$200 doesn not look so good anymore. But if you were going to buy all three anyway, then great
