Software update not working

Software update found new itunes/quicktime/ and something else. Tried installing them, and after I click reboot, the desktop UI disappears leaving just the wallpaper and it just Hangs there. Nothing happens.

What's going on?
 
I haven't seen this before. I'd probably let it sit there for a while (20 minutes perhaps) and if it didn't reboot on its own I'd probably do a hard reboot and verify my disk and disk permissions using Disk Utility when the system came back up .

BTW, if your system is hung, how did you type this message? 😕
