You need to check out the rEFit documentation at their site:

http://refit.sourceforge.net/

I personally have used BootIt Next Generation on my Win machine to boot from internal separate drives including one with Ubuntu. No experience doing it on a Mac though. Ubuntu uses GRUB as its boot loader and if I remember correctly, it usually defaults to the root of the master drive. Don't have any idea how it would work on an EFI system.

Regards.
