MacBook Keyboard Acting Crazy

Hello Everyone,

I am a new user here on MacRumors:Forums, and I need some help. I have a late 2007 MacBook, and I am having some very weird issues with the keyboard. When I first got it I had the original problem where the keyboard was unresponsive. That issue was resolved with the keyboard update. The problem I am having now is that certain key such "enter" and the up and down keys are doing things they aren't supposed to. Such as the up/down keys now control the volume, and the "enter" key will start playing music in iTunes if it is opened.

This very annoying and I can't find a solution. I ran Apple Update and I am up to date including the EFI update, but that was no help. I have also tried zapping the PRAM, again to no avail.

If anyone can help me that would be great. Sorry if this has been posted before, but I did search and couldn't find anything.

Well, since you have the keyboard update, I would guess your keyboard has gone bad and may need to be repaired. Do you have an Apple certified repair center near you?

I really don't think that my keyboard has gone bad. It still works fine its just that some of the keys are doing things that they aren't supposed to do. Its almost like the keyboard mapping is screwed up.

If no one here has any ideas, then maybe I will just have to take it the the Apple Store, and have a Mac Genius look at it.

Have you tried going into the keyboard shortcuts under system pref? Maybe somehow that was changed..

Can you boot XP with bootcamp? If so, try to see if the keyboard behaves strangely in XP and if not, then it's probably a software fault in OSX, if it does I suppose it's hardware.

Try and narrow your problem down to a hardware or software issue. Swap your hard drive out with another macbook and see if you still have the same issues. If you still have the same issue, likely your problem is hardware.

Check your keybd mapping under prefs!

I have had some crazy things going on with my keyboard that may be related. As I type, the cursor suddenly jumps somewhere else in a line, inserts the cursor or to a different field.

This began happening (I believe) when I changed my system prefs> Track Pad options and unchecked "Ignore Accidental Trackpad Input" - now it seems to jump and be accidental all of the time while typing!

I hope this may help in your search to fix the issue or if anyone else knows about what exactly is going on.

I think is happening to me too, but only on the internal keyboard and not the aluminum one plugged in. I never noticed it before today as the macbook is most always docked. It did work fine a few months back before the last batch of Updates from apple, like the Aluminum Keyboard one. Is there something somewhere that I can click to reset all keyboard preferences back to system defaults? Thanks!

i had the same problems with my macbook, very frustrating. cursor jumping to the beginning of the line and erasing what youve type etc. i got a fix from apple in the form of a new macbook pro

No Way this can't be! It can't be hardware... I am using my wifes MB today because my MBP fried for the 2nd time just yesterday! So how many macs does it take to get a job done these days. Did u try anything first before returning? The nearest apple repair store here is over 1000 km and u need a plane ticket. thx...

people, i think i have a answer for you!

i bought a macbook black and i have the same problem...

the problem is: the battery press the trackpad underside. so the trackpad gets sensible when you put your hands on, near the keyboard. the trackpad clicks on where is the cursor.

this is a problem on the laptop's architeture.

the trackpad button must make a "click" when you press it. if not, you must having this problem.

try to let the battery a little bit dislocate. do not press too much when you lock it. i did this and it works fine now.

I've been having the same problem... started as soon as I hooked up a Time Capsule (which itself took about three times to get to work)... this is happening all the time and it's driving me nuts so I set it up to not see the trackpad if my mouse is plugged in and hopefully it won't keep happening when I'm in the field and don't have the same problem when the trackpad is enabled. Will check out the battery thing... interesting solution.

for me is all about the force i put on the "hand support". everytime i press, it also press the battery and then mouse clicks... technical support is a little bit expensive here in brazil... and is still possible to use the computer, so i'm still running with this problem... this problem keep me away from a daily use... so i just use it on live sets (i make music). so please apple, take care about this kind of problem... i paid a lot for this and i don't have free assistence here :(((
