and after finally figuring out how to make good, everyday coffee at home (with a french press and a coffee grinder) i am not spending $10+ a day on it either.

and i never, ever thought i would say this: but Starbucks Pike's Place roast is pretty dang good. been buying it whole bean for a week or so.

One thing I used to do when I worked at a coffee shop was take a small hot cup, fill it with whatever kind of coffee beans (whatever your favorite is; Vanilla nut, Winter blend, etc.) and put it in your car's backseat cupholder. Your car will smell like Jesus's farts, and yes, they smell amazing.

I love good coffee, if I am going to have it I have it black with no sugar or milk.

I love espresso, once in a revision session with my teacher and friends in school we all sat around in the classroom chatting, drinking espresso (from a machine that I brought in) and listening to jazz. I drank over 20 cups in a day (quite large espresso measures) which spawned the now notorious quote amongst my friends "I have no concept of moderation". See pic...

I can't stand coffee. There is only one other taste in the world that I can stand even less and that's pineapple. Seriously, I don't get how anyone can like either. And what I really hate about coffee even more are the drinkers and how they think you're weird if you don't drink it. And what I hate about pineapple is how people put it on pizza.

I love the smell of coffee, but hate the taste. I don't drink it.

Oh my god the smell of it makes me nauseous. If I were to step inside a starbucks I'd probably puke.

I was wondering if it is good or not. Maybe I'll buy some next time I need some beans. Is it a dark roast?

I have been buying the Red Sea Blend at Whole Foods. It is fantastic. And I really like the medium roast brewed coffee at The Coffee Bean. Good stuff.

However, I miss my Tim Horton's Large Double Double with Milk! I used to go daily when I lived in Toronto. They would see me walking in, and would have my coffee ready before I ordered it. Before I moved, I bought 4 Tim Horton's mugs for my morning coffee and to remind me of home.

 you must have drank the crap instant stuff and not got a proper caffeine hit.

I've read that people who drink coffee everyday don't get a caffeine hit. They have to withdraw before caffeine really takes affect again, that takes a couple days.

When I would work in the morning and got home, I would drink a cup so I wouldn't fall asleep, and ruin my sleep schedule. I hate morning shifts. Otherwise I don't drink it, it messes with my stomach.

Coffee. Yes! Sweet, sweet coffee. (Actually, I drink it black 95% of the time.)

I'm blessed to live in a town with so many fantastic roasters. When I feel like splurging a bit I grab a bag of whatever looks good at Blue Bottle, or a bag of the dark roast at Graffeo. Trader Joe's packs pretty respectable beans for very reasonable prices to suit my daily drinking needs -- I'm currently partial to their Nicaraguan.

I brew with a six cup French press, which yields about three mugs of coffee. I'm experimenting with cutting back, actually: using between half and two thirds the full load of water and grounds. Seems to be working okay for me. I might want to just buy a three cup press to strictly enforce the new rules, though.

I also have a Moka pot, but only use it seldomly. Mostly when my fiancée wants a cup of decaf.

Oooh, speaking of unexpected pleasures... Target started selling their Archer Farms brands of coffees... they're fairly inexpensive, like $6-7 for a standard bag of ground coffee. They are surprisingly good. Particularly the Sumatra.

But my latest bag is from Whole Foods, Mocha/Java blend. I don't really care for coffees from S. America... I prefer something from the Pacific ocean, and I won't drink dark roast if I can avoid it.

OMFG. I was in San Francisco right after Christmas (my dad and I went to see Oregon State play in the Emerald Bowl) and we went to Blue Bottle. I ordered an espresso macchiato and he ordered a decaf mocha.

BEST DAMN COFFEE EVER.

There are a couple of rather good coffee shops in my city, and a fantastic one up in Portland, but none of them even TOUCH Blue Bottle. I always used to tell people to stop by St. Mary's Cathedral (blows the European cathedrals out of the water, IMO), but now I also tell them to go to Blue Bottle's kiosk afterward to end things on a high note.

I have to add to this discussion: http://www.espressomap.com This is where I found out about Blue Bottle. The author of the website wrote: "I made this map so that when travelling in North America I can find truly excellent espresso on the way. I add locations based on my own experience, insider consensus, or validation from competition-level baristi."

Indeed, it's hard to overstate just how amazingly good Blue Bottle is. They've opened a cafe downtown now, too, with this enormous steampunk-looking $20,000 drip coffee contraption that produces a cup of coffee that tastes like no coffee you've ever had before. Absolutely love "real" coffee - I start the morning with an espresso and drink regular cups of fresh coffee throughout the day, normally from a French Press.
On the other hand, instant coffee is absolutely disgusting and should be renamed to "instant coffee substitute" - there is no way it even remotely resembles coffee!

I've always enjoyed a good cup of coffee, with some cream and sugar, but recently my coffee consumption has begun to reach almost frightening levels. My wife started working at our local Starbucks, and so I naturally go visit her there, and I'll take my MBP with me to enjoy some wireless internet. And I'll have a cup of whatever they are brewing. And then I'll have another. And another. And by the time I am done I have had 5 large cups of coffee and it's time to jitter and shake my way out the door.

On that note, I'm a big fan of Starbuck's Verona roast. It's bold, but not overwhelming. The new Pike Place Roast is alright too, but a little weak for me.

I've ordered it before, it's really good but not an everyday drink. I'm ashamed to say that I don't even have a drip coffee maker anymore so I go out for proper coffee. I'd be happy to see the recipe though if you're in a sharing sort of mood.

Daveman Deluxe
Apr 16, 2008, 01:17 PM
I certainly agree that it's not an everyday sort of drink. My friends and I like to make it when we're having a get-together. It's also good with just a touch of peppermint schnapps in it.

I don't know the amounts in our recipe. We just kind of go by taste and memory:

Unsweetened chocolate, chopped
Milk (one cup of milk per four ounces of chocolate)
Sugar
Vanilla
Nutmeg
Cayenne pepper (optional)

Heat the milk in a sauce pan over low heat, but don't boil it. It should be steaming just a tad--about the temperature of your coffee or tea. Melt the chocolate in the milk, whisking constantly. Once the chocolate is melted, continue whisking and add sugar and vanilla to taste (just a few drops of vanilla should suffice). Continue whisking until the mixture thickens up--it should be about the thickness of gravy. Serve in very small mugs--I usually serve it in espresso cups or demitasses. Sprinkle a little ground nutmeg on top, or if you like, a bit of cayenne pepper. Also, a dash of salt with the sugar can't hurt, but I don't bother with it.

it's good stuff! :)

I love the proper hot chocolate - cook on the hob with milk and real cocoa and adding your own sugar but sometimes I can't be arsed and just do the instant, but I always add milk or it's just wrong.

that sounds mighty good at the moment actually...

Perish the thought!! Starbucks is terrible. I guess if it's all you've got, that's OK, but if you've got locally owned/run coffee shops, support your local brewers! You'll find that the coffee is better and the people are cooler.

While I disagree that Starbucks coffee itself it bad, I do agree that it's better to patronize locally-owned coffee shops; Starbucks, while a noble idea of creating a haven of rest and solitude to enjoy your coffee, doesn't quite get there for me (too many Starbucks are too much alike for this to really be the case). Local spots are tops becuase you get to know the decor, the feel, the people and then it becomes "My" coffee shop.

I wouldn't say that Starbucks coffee is terrible. It IS consistently mediocre. Also, the point of most Starbucks drinks is that the coffee is not the focus. Starbucks makes a mediocre espresso (and with espresso, anything less than "very good" is really not worth drinking), but good mochas, lattés, etc.

I would wager that most Starbucks workers know more about frothing milk than they do about making coffee. I have several friends who work there and it seems to be the case.

i did a coffee course as well as 5 star restaurant service and setup course at a hospitality school and i agree that espresso extracting is easy, all you have to do is just tamper the coffee grounds and then extract them at the push of the button. but the real mastery is with the milk wand. the frothed milk has to have no bubbles, have a silk like sheen and be around 70C. practice makes perfect. and then theres all the frappacinos which i have no idea how to make but i bet theyre easy to learn.

btw i its 8am and i just had my morning espresso! bwaZANG!

155F ≃ 68C is the temp at which some coffee drinkers like their steamed milk. when im not having a black espresso i actually like mine a bit hotter than 70C so it doesnt get cold down the bottom.

in fact theres a café in my home town called Cibo who make their coffees exclusively around 65C so they can be drunk quite quickly in the morning rush.

I usually have a smell, whiff, and then little sip before I add my Espresso. The Coffee Vacume brewer also has a high entertainment value, it is clear plastic, and fun to watch the steam build up in the bottom, then push the water into the top, boil about 2-3 minutes, turn off, and the brewed coffee comes back down into the pot. This Is A True Story.

I've been looking for a French Press and a travel mug for quite a while. I preferred the travel mug be Starbucks brand, simply because I had one before and it was great, but I got rid of it since I seldom used it (I got a bad style and it wouldn't fit in my cupholder). So I'm looking for another one.

I found at a yard sale a mug that was both in one: French Press built in to a travel mug and - wait for it - was also Starbucks. I picked it up for a mere $2.00. Works great, smooth cup of coffee, beautiful. I was amped at the find.

Interesting calling French press "weak". I think that you're probably nearly alone in that opinion. The Moka pot is actually much easier than an espresso machine, but it doesn't really produce the same kind of coffee as you get out of a "proper" espresso machine. It's still quite good for my tastes, though.

^ a French Press is where you add ground expresso beans into boiling water, wait a while and then press the knob to filter the grounds right? ive tried that and i found it weaker than a Moka pot and i even added more grounds. in a Moka pot i add four teaspoons.

That would be great until you got to the raw milk.

By the way, nowadays 7-Eleven actually makes pretty good coffee, with one good reason: corporate policy means they cannot let a pot of coffee sit for over a hour, which means the coffee is always reasonably fresh. As a result, there's a big crowd of people buying coffee at the 7-Eleven store I frequent during the morning commute.

It's meant to be weaker than a Moka pot. A Moka pot makes a facsimilie of espresso; French press is more akin to drip coffee in that regard, but stronger than drip coffee.

nope..never have..never will.

why? i tried it once...took a sip...hated it. i also hate warm drinks so that didn't help.

plus, i hate the smell...i know...even non-coffee drinkers like the smell, but now me.

another reason? i live in Canada. There is a Tim Horton's every few kilometre's it seems and they have the most idiotic lineups. idiotic in the sense that, good for the ppl in them, but bad b/c the Timmies are usually located in smaller malls so driving areas are small and the lineups cause massive delays. just ridiculous.

another reason? I see way too many jittery folks who got hooked on it so bad they can't function without drinking any.

to me, imho, that is sad. i'm lucky to say that i don't need anything to get my body woken up and excited to start the day. i'm living..that is good enough for me.

one last reason: conspiracy theory - i firmly believe the coffee makers out there junk it up with something to make it more addictive. just a thought, but i believe it.

i do wish i owned a Timmy's though - liquid gold they are.

Cheers,
keebler

The poll seems a bit biased, IMHO. There's no option for "Hell Yes!" like there is for "Hell no!" :D Coffee: isn't that one of the four basic food groups? It's my one vice, and I'm hangin' on to it!

So many coffee lovers. New question:

What's your favorite coffee shop?

Mine would have to be It's a Grind.

Nope I prefer my own... I love the flavored liquid creamers I've been getting at the grocery store. mmm....yum.

Crème brûlée
Hazelnut Cream
...mmm, I could go on. :D

Did you know that most iced tea served at restaurants is 97-99% caffeine free?

Always check before you order it...if you're not sure, double check before you order...esp. if you need your daily fix.

For those that like an Iced Coffee or Latte, try this at home. It's really quick, less time than stopping and waiting at the coffee shop. I make one almost every morning, takes 1 minute to make, 1 minute to clean-up! It tastes better than any one you can buy...oh and it's CHEAP!

Homemade Iced Latte

1 tbsp. freeze dried instant coffee (I use 2-3 myself)
1 1/2 c. cold milk, white or chocolate (I mix both)
1 tsp. vanilla AGAVE syrup (can be found in health food section, other flavors available)
Ice cubes
Pour into a jelly jar, seal, shake for ten seconds, and enjoy! You can also blend with ice to make a frozen latte.

AGAVE syrup is a natural sweetener that isn't sugar-based and is 3 times sweeter, so you don't need a lot. It's also low cal compared to regular sweeteners, so this can be a great drink if you're on a diet. If you can't find vanilla (there is plain) you can get a sugar-free vanilla coffee syrup and add a tbsp. of that as well. I like mine stronger, so I bought instant espresso too and go 1 tbsp. each coffee and espresso.

SAVINGS:
If you were to buy an Iced Latte 5 days a week for a year...
$4 @ Starbucks = $1040
$2 @ McDonalds = $520
$0.40 @ HOMEMADE = $104

Anyway, give it a try and hope you enjoy! :D

You're absolutely right.

However, I still don't mind pay the $3 because, for me, I usually go in a coffee shop with my Mac and chill for a few hours (It's a Grind, not Starbucks. Free WiFi ftw). But then again, I also don't go in more than 3 times a week (usually 2).

I'm sorry, did you just say, and I'm quoting, "freeze-dried instant coffee"?

get some expresso coffee from the supermarket and make a french press or expresso and use that. it would taste SOOO much better… and youd get a bigger caffeine hit ;)

Believe it or not....yes. There are a few good quality freeze dried coffees on the market, but agree that they are not anywhere as good as fresh ground & brewed. By no means is this a replacement for "quality coffee" drinks. I still buy my Caribou/Starbucks/Dunn Brothers coffees. It does taste very close to some $4 iced blended coffees and hands down way better than McDonalds or gas station fare. This recipe is for those that buy McDonalds iced coffees, when you need a quick fix or a cool treat. It's a "candy-coffee" like a milkshake. I still get my hot, dark roast for the morning and the iced coffee goes in the fridge for the afternoon.

If you have the time, agreed.

I was skeptical myself, but it really isn't as bad as you'd think. Remember, this is a blended latte-style drink. It's mainly milk with sweetener and coffee. For roughly 40 cents, you get a quick iced latte that tastes better than the McDonalds drink and almost as good as SB Frappuccino.

Actually, I did not know that, but I'm not too worried about getting a caffeine fix. I've already been addicted to caffeine once, I don't intend to rekindle the addiction. I try to limit myself to 1-2 caffeinated beverages per day (generally tea, I try not to drink coffee or sodas).
