Gizmodo reported (http://gizmodo.com/379474/latest-iphone-firmware-saves-pictures-from-safari) that the latest iPhone 2.0 Beta firmware allows users to save photos from Safari directly to iPhoto. We tried and it works: just hold your finger against an image for a longer time than usual and the popup dialog will appear.Current versions of the iPhone offers no method to download photos from Safari, and the only way to get photos into the Photo application is through iTunes/iPhoto syncing.

Ooh one more thing! I'd like to be able to save higher quality pictures to the iPhone as well, as we can do with the iPod.
What's the point of being able to squeeze and zoom when iTunes automatically "optimizes" (reduces) the picture quality?
This is especially useful with pictures that contain words (comics, magazine scans).

I just noticed that the corner of the screen shot shows t-Mobile as the service provider. What's up with that? Is this a european phone or something?

This feature will make it much sweeter for the iPhone wallpaper sites...being able to download and install wallpapers using only the iPhone and not needing to sync with your computer.

While we're talking about pictures there's a couple of features that I'd like (I don't think they are too painful).
1) Save pics from Mail and have them sync back to iPhoto as "Mail Attachments" or something like that
2) Be able to send more than 1 pic per e-mail - this particular thing has annoyed me a number of times
3) Old hat I know but I want some freakin MMS for crying out loud. It's embarrassing when my friends with $20 phones are looking at a picture message and I'm sitting there trying to get viewmymessage.com to load (which hasn't worked for crap recently)

I would think that go to URL would take you to the pictures address, in the same window.

I don't have an iPhone, so what happens when you take them with the built-in camera, do they not go into the photo application then?

Actually I do think MMS would be great. What I usually do when I want to send a picture is send it using the Mail application and then just enter that special e-mail address that redirects your e-mail to someone's phone. And the people that want to send pictures to me just enter my e-mail address in their phone instead of my phone number when they're in their text application thingy lol.

Nothing like ridiculous workarounds to get a functionality that merely resembles how it should work.

I asked Apple to include this!
I also asked them to add the measurements to the cursor when taking a screenshot in OSX.
I'm probably not the only one but hey right now I am tremendous! :D
They haven't come through on an Apple branded TV with built in frontrow/appletv software yet but give 'em time. ;)

Who made you the moral watchman? Do you think that Apple should even have a say in what can and cannot be put on their products?

I find it interesting that the most basic of functions gets this community so excited and the prospect of a function has it hanging by a thread.
These are not breakthrough functions, cut and paste and saving a picture. I think Apple has delayed most of these functions just because they can't come up with the most slick way to deploy said function. A cool swipe with three fingers and a tap at the end has delayed my full enjoyment of my iPhone. Don't get me wrong, I like my iPhone but I've had better, better functioning phones, better reception, better voice quality, better battery, better email.
Most of those phones could copy and paste and save pictures from day one.
So, copy a picture from a website to my phone does not get me that excited. Having to wait at least a month and a half more to be able to do that?! Why does everyone give the iPhone a free pass?

Why? Because you knew exactly what you were getting into in the first place. If GM told all their SUV owners they were issuing an update to the computer that handles fuel management and they'll be able to now get 24mpg highway all the SUV owners would be happy but you, sitting there with your Prius might think it's lame.
You bought the phone fully knowing it had no saving of pictures from the web, saving e-mail attachments, MMS, the list goes on an on. But you bought it anyway and what you're getting now is a free enhancement of the functionality. Just because it's not new to the industry doesn't mean it's nothing to appreciate and get excited about.

YES YES YES. the most up to date phone should have features that are basic to most other phones and that have existed for years

Not really what I'm getting at, but I see your point. I'm not unhappy that I have an iPhone. I'm unhappy with the progress to this point of the development of the product. I think if it was a Nokia or a Samsung phone people would be way more critical of it, because it's an Apple product, well you get my point.

This will be a good feature. Although I agree, native MMS handling would be better.
Just to make everyone aware... there is also this tool for Jailbreaked phones, IMGrab:

It's not perfect, but at least with T-Mobile's web-based MMS retrieval, is functional in downloading reasonably high-res versions of MMS pictures to the camera roll.

...it's about time. Apple finally gets one right. Now we had better start seeing some signs of Copy & Paste...
-----
Of course we know that $20 cheapo phones can do all these basic functions already. That's exactly why we're excited. After having spent a small fortune, & getting locked into a two year commitment to what turned out to be a phone with the most potential and least actual usefulness, you'd be excited too to see Apple finally pull their head out & put the functionality in they should have over a year ago.

Yeah.... what about copy and paste? It can't be that hard to implement.

Apple should add a "Downloaded Pictures" section.

Apple should add a "Downloaded Pictures" section.
You never know, they might, kinda seems pointless though, they should just have a "pictures" for both photos and downloaded images, but when in the camera app, when you see the photos you have, it should just show pictures, not downloaded ones...maybe...

So I have noticed something with Apple's "updates." I have noticed that a LOT of the new "features" they have been adding to the iPhone/iPod are (a lot of the time) already available to Jailbroken phones. Let me list them.
1. This saving of pictures (as noted above)
2. Multiple pages on the Home Screen (Summerboard made this possible ages ago. In fact I remember before Apple made this a standard, that this is one way I impressed my friends who's iPhones weren't Jailbroken)
3. Home Screen Layout customization (Customize, and I believe some other apps let you do do this awhile ago as well)
4. App Store.... Installer anyone?
5. Instant Messenger (Apollo and MobileChat. Now I know Apple hasn't OFFICIALLY announced anything regarding this, but they have shown a patent showing a GUI for it and also AOL showed of a Native AIM app)
6. MMS (There is an app that allows this, although it's been pretty wonky IMO)
7. Make your own ringtones for free using Garageband (now I know this one isn't HUGE, but before you were able to use Garageband to make your own custom ringtones, you could edit your mp3s in any app and then use iToner, or something similar, to get the ringtone onto your phone)
That is all I can think of right now, but I am sure there is more I am missing. What do you think Apple will implement from the Jailbroken community? Maybe themes? Don't get me wrong I LOVE Apple, but when they are coming out with "new" features that I have already had on my phone for months, I just don't get too excited. I do like that they are implemented better, less buggy, better GUI, etc. But part of the fun in hacking my phone is when I get to "geek out" and try to fix something that myself or an app messed up ;)

I just tried it. While looking at a picture in Safari simply hold your finger on the photo and after about 3 seconds in asks you if you want to save it. When you save it it goes to the camera roll.
