If I missed the question in the archives please forgive me.

Am I correct in thinking that, if I produce a piece of audio in my DAW utilizing Dolby 5.1, it will still retain the surround sound features whether I output the file as .wav or .mp3? (I understand that .wav is uncompressed and .mp3 is compressed/lossy). I just wanted to be sure that the file type I output to is not the deciding factor of the Dolby 5.1 effect/quality, but rather the way I master and bounce down the track.

There is a surround version of MP3 format, and while I'm not 100% sure if surround audio can be bundled into a single .wav file (I know .aiff supports that, so .wav might, too), you can always distribute siz separate .wav files.

So yes, the way to package/distribute the final audio is independent from the surround-or-stereo question.
