What is using all the ram?

Hi,
I dont know that much about computers so this may be a stupid question...but i looked at activity monitor and it says 2.3gb of ram is being used when i have no applications open, there are not any processes listed that are using that much so i was just wondering where its going!?thanks!

I see a process ID of at least ~4300. Your computer has been turned on for some time.
