View Full Version : New iTunes/iPod Television Ad

MacRumors
Nov 13, 2003, 06:50 PM
Apple has a new iPod Television Ad (http://www.apple.com/ipod/ads/ad3length30.html) which appears to use a remixed version of Rock Star by N.E.R.D. (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=626633&selectedItemId=626508)

This represents the 3rd television advertisement based on Apple's colorful silhouette iPod ad campaign (http://www.chaosmint.com/mac/ipod-ads/).

Previous television ads (http://www.apple.com/ipod/ads/) featured Hey Mama by Black Eyed Peas (http://www.dailytunes.com/songs/20031023231219.html) and Are You Gonna Be My Girl by Jet (http://www.dailytunes.com/songs/20031023231511.html).

WOW.

THAT was odd. Literally the second I clicked on the bookmark to go to MacRumors, this commercial came on, and this thread was at the top of the page!!

The 2nd Ad (the first rock ad) has also been released in 15 and 45 second versions, and both of the previous two have now been officially modified to include the text that has been on the ads when they run on TV (iPod + iTunes, Now For Windows).

I like the new one. I like them all.

i liked it, it was real good. i like the unremixed version more but it wouldnt be as upbeat. I think apple needs to get a rap one with some 50 cent or Jay z or something.

I liked it better when the tag at the end said Mac and Windows, the For Windows tag was a little strange.

I like that shoe shot on the green background in the very beginning. Apple sure knows how to make upbeat and cool ads (and they're finally starting to put their web address in them, too!).

It says "Now for Windows", not just "For Windows". I think that implies that it's for Mac as well. :)

True, but I still prefer the Mac and Windows tag at the end.

I agree, the music was not timed with the dancing, the dancing was very random, unlike the other two ads.

Well, that's why you're not marketing Apple's products...

Bands like Jet, Black Eyed Peas, and N.E.R.D. are very hip, very "now", and exactly what Apple needs to say "we're on the leading edge of things."

How crazy is it that this song (at least the remix they use in the ad) is not available at the iTMS? Come on Apple, you know your devotees want to have the latest "theme song" on their iPods!! I ended up downloading the entire Jet album (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=2859605) after the last ad. Don't see that happening with N.E.R.D., but that remix rocks!!

Just THIS WEEK they finally added the Propellerheads "Take California" (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=3444793&selectedItemId=3444764) which was the original iPod dancing guy song from a couple years back...finally able to replace my Limewired version with the real thing!

The song in the ad is indeed the remixed version of "Rock Star" by N.E.R.D.

The remix is done by Jason Nevins and is on the Blue Crush soundtrack...

Um, I wouldn't call N.E.R.D. "very now." They aren't anything new, or leading edge, the way the BEP are or Jet.

Yeah, we definately need some RAP (regardless of your views on it, it's main stream stuff). Overall though, I liked it. I think the "Now for Windows" is good though. As much as we don't want to admit it, there are people out there that attach stigma with "Mac". The Apple logo at the end is enough.

Wrong. I listen to my share of Hip-Hop (for a rocker) including some gangster rap...DMX, Dre, Cypress Hill, Fugees...word...

Anyway, the Black Eyed Peas song, to me, was a good compromise. I mean, what do you call that other than rap? What, you want Snoop Dog? Next I suppose you want Rush Limbaugh advertising Ford trucks. What? He's mainstream. Have you seen his ratings??

Having more hardcore rap will offend some people. Why do that? I think they've done a good job. Don't let your own personal music preferences get in the way of your senses. Black Eyed Peas is a fine middle ground.

Some of you guys sound like the local media on the Seahawks. The Seahawks, a perennially mediochre team, is 6-3 right now, on top of their division, and all anyone can do is bitch about the fact that they've lost a couple of games. They were 9-7 last year. Y'all need to have some appreciation for how good these times are for Apple, and how great these ads are compared to many in the past. Those of us that have been backing Apple since the '80s are happy. Apple posted a 45 MILLION DOLLAR PROFIT last quarter! Does anyone here remember when that was their loss...EVERY QUARTER??? I do.

[/rant]

I also disagree with the statement that the dancing doesn't go along with the music. This is a very rave-like mix...and...have y'all been to a rave? That's as coordinated as it gets.

I like the ad. Funny, last time I saw one of their ads I was just thinking that they needed a third music type, like rave mix.

Wait a second, I was just thinking they needed a rave mix...how did they know?!?

I think I would like to see something completely different, just to show diversity in sound... how about Koyaanisqatsi by Philip Glass, I am not really serious about that, but how about something with out a beat something meditative to show the diversity of users. They would do well with a holiday ad, generic holiday ad of course.

That's probably a good idea. Something recognizable to the indie crowd would be ideal, I think a lot of people would be excited about that -- a demographic Apple really needs to tap into.

Lets see we need a punk band... some electronica/dance and some rap... yeah then we are 'done'

It drives me nuts that a huge number of hip hop/rap albums have "The Neptunes Present... Clones" in the "users also bought" section but the Neptunes album hasn't been available for weeks now on the iTMS.

I was listening to AM radio on the way home from work and during the Tom Leykis show he did an ad for iTunes. I couldn't believe it. He supposedly has the #1 show on the radio in most of the markets he's in. Has anyone else heard an iTunes ad on the radio?

I want to see a punk rock commerical!

Another good commerical would be some surf rock from Man..or Astroman. They are from my home state and they are pretty well known on SE and W coasts.

For punk rock music I suggest something by Dropkick Murphy's

I was thinking the same thing.....I don't know if this is against forum rules, but what if everyone with an account in the iTunes Music Store went a purchased a pre-determined song? I wonder how much it would change the ratings.....

Here's what I was thinking: we take a look at one song in the iTMS, say, the Top Songs link in iTMS, and pick a song. We then all, en masse, on a pre-determined day, go and buy that song, and see if it changes its rating. Actually, we could do this with any song, not just one in the Top Songs link.

I think I'll start my own thread, and see where this goes.....

Neptunes, BLack Eyed Peas are both rap, correct, and should not to be confused with Hip-Hop.

What, you want Snoop Dog?

Snoop Dogg (Hip-Hop/Rap) composes more than just "gangster" music.

Having more hardcore rap will offend some people. Why do that?

Well, because this is a democracy and majority rules?. When done properly by choosing an appropriate piece outside of the Gangster genre, Hip-Hop (hardcore) can in fact be greater than the stereotypical definition it tends to be labeled with..... example, Mos Def, Black Starr, Gang Starr, Jeru The Damaja, The Roots, KRS-One, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, GroupHome, Erick B & Rakim, EPMD, Common Sense.

Just watched the ad on the Apple site - I like it! I'm glad that Apple is choosing a variety of different music styles for their ads so far. It's definitely a good statement to make about iTunes itself, being that the service offers so much music in so many genres.

As for those of you complaining that they need rap, punk, etc. ads, be patient, as I'm sure we'll eventually see more from Apple!

I think a rap ad would be good. You just have to market it during the right TV programs, i.e. during the shows that the demographic that listens to rap watches. Ditto for indie and whatever else you want to do. It doesn't have to appeal to everyone, just the audience that sees it.

ITR 81
Nov 14, 2003, 02:04 AM
H2O would be another good band to do a commerical on. If I picked a song it would be "Guilty By Association".

But at the begining you see them plug in their iPod and load the song and they all just start going mad.

Man..or Astroman would be good as it's surf rock like Dick Dale but has old scfi audio dubbed in. Best sound would be "The Sound Waves are Reversing" In the song they say "Why has the music stopped? Look at the meter the sound waves are reversing" The music then actual reverses and just at that point Apple could put up it's logo and such and say something like "Always innovating" or something like that.

I'm sure the superbowl commerical will probably have folks using G5's and PB's and iPods in it.

And if you want to get some girls into indi rock they could always team up with Liz Phair as she loves the iPod and even said on Tech Tv she wouldn't go anywhere without it!? Good celebrity commerical.

They need to do a switch commerical for the Va Tech SC guy...that would be one best switches ever!

The Hives would be another good band as well.

I could see another one where you have Minibar playing in the background "Choked Up" Has boy and girl chatting using iChat and iSight and then at the end they get together. At the end Apple could put up "Always bringing folks together."

Then you could always do a commerical about musicans using the hardware and software to make their music..could also do one for indi film makers since most them do use it.

Need commerical about new G5 Xserve. Maybe something similar to what IBM runs on Tech Tv but not the same.

I could see a commerical showing someone using the new voice recorder to lectures in school and then later to record a live band..but it may have to be done through belkin..as I've never seen tv belkin commerical.

If they wanted to do euro commerical they could do it with The International Noise Conspiracy and probably the Living End.

nice to see the neptunes on board with apple. the only reference to the computer world i've heard is pharell referencing gates on snoops latest.

weird that the Clones album isn't available now...it was when it first came out...strange.

your typical "techno" remix, but not bad. something from the Clones album would have been nice though.

BEP has referenced apple on a few albums. they're very different now. whoever said they were new is wacked. and N.E.R.D. is a new sound. the neptunes sound has only been around a few years.

nice commercial. gotta get me an iPod!

The version is the Jason Nevins Classic Club Blaster Mix of Rock Star.

It seems to have been cutoff & resonance filtered because it's not quite the same as the CD version (maybe a bit of post editing by Apple going on).

N.E.R.D. stands for No-One Ever Really Dies in case you were all wondering.

Chad Hugo & Pharrell Williams write some very interesting stuff which has renewed my interest in HipHop/Rap. Their blend of interesting beats combined with 1970 style miami vice sounds prove a working combo

I had downloaded almost all of the tracks from "In search of..." from Kazaa and Gnutella. When I finally purchased the album I find that it's a second release of the album with real percussion instead of 808/909 drum sounds. Now I have 2 versions of each song and am still trying to obtain the original release. :)

1. NERD
2. BEP
3. Jet

Sorry, I just like NERD better. Weird thing was, I was playing SSX 3 when I heard their named with BEP, etc. I Googled them, then looked up at Acquisition. I was always looking for that one version I heard in the iPod commercial and SSX 3. Thanks for the advice. Bought it.

NERD and BEP don't seem to be rap to me.
And I don't think rap will work well with an iPod commercial. Let's see how someone dances to Hey Ya. iPod commercials are supposed to be a little more upbeat and faster. It's easier to have people dancing to something like NERD, even better with BEP and JET, that 50 cent. Sorry, just IMO.

NERD was my fav. :p
