View Full Version : How big is your music collection?

The other day, a co-worker showed me a picture thousands of vinyl and CD's he had collected over several decades (along with some nice equipment). I then told him I have the same amount of music, on a 3.5" hard drive whereas his took up an entire room.

Well, what's your count folks?

60-70GB of music
100+ Movies in digital form

I could play music for over 40 days straight and never hit the same song twice. I could never listen to all of it, but nice to have around :)

250+ gigs worth of ripped and purchased music. Over 600+ cd's. My cd collection takes up a nice shiny metal carring case and two really big brown boxes in the garage!

There is this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=282671) from last year.

I've got about 100 more LPs and maybe 150 more cds from the photos in that thread.

I love looking at toothpaste's photos.

My iTunes library stands , currently, at 11,735 tracks. I add about 150 a month to it.

wow. i feel like such a beginner. lol.
i have 260 songs [1.5GB], with a couple CDs I need to rip, and about 200 songs I need to get from a friend. Then you add in four movies, some music videos, two shorts and a ton of podcasts and that equals my library for now.

I plan on ripping my DVDs but waiting to get the Mac mini for the storage.

Perhaps... but his collection will always be more impressive and say a lot more about his commitment to music (and his opinion of its worth) than yours.

This is exactly why I am starting to build my physical collection up to the size it ought to be—which is to say, "massive." :)

Perhaps... but his collection will always be more impressive and say a lot more about his commitment to music (and his opinion of its worth) than yours.

Not necessarily.

I used to think this way too; that a person's physical collection somehow meant they valued music more.

Then I came to understand that the physical manifestations of someone's interests (whether in book libraries, film libraries, or music libraries) rarely had anything to do with a person's inner appreciation of said interests.

Simply put, I love music.

But I also cherish simplicity.

I don't need to be able to point to my music collection to demonstrate my appreciation of it any more than I need to have my parents in the same room with me to love them.

Inevitably, the things we own end up owning us; possessions and the trappings of wealth are just a form of imprisonment without bars.

I resolved to never collect physical treasures again--not books, not films, not music.

For me, containing my favorite records on an iPod or hard drive is worth infinitely more for my peace of mind than having them occupy space in the physical world.

If someone gave me the chance to have my entire collection on LPs or CDs, I would thank them, and happily decline.

I'd much rather have my music fit in the palm of my hand than in two hundred pounds of plastic and vinyl in a corner of my room.

Simplicity is the way.

So, of the people with massive music collections, how much do you actually listen to?

I've bought maybe 250 CD's in my life, I can honestly say that I listen to maybe 20-30 of them. My iTunes collection isn't large, at most 3-4 GB, but again, I probably only listen to 100 songs consistently.

I guess I have the rest around "just in case," but I'm not sure in case of what.

But then again, I only really use the iPod when I'm exercising. I've noticed that some people wear them basically all the time, I've even had a few face to face conversations while the other person is rocking out with the headphones on.

heatmiser
Jun 30, 2008, 02:43 AM
Mine's not massive by any stretch (roughly 5500 songs and dropping), but I listen to all of it. About 5% of them are unplayed, and most of those are actually my (as in me the musician) songs.

I've spent the last two months getting rid of things I realized I no longer listened to, and my collection is much more satisfying as a result. I don't want the just-in-case stuff. I want the can't live without stuff. It results in fewer songs, but it feels good knowing I'm not hanging on to albums because I'm afraid to get rid of them.

With regards to listening time, I pretty much listen to music all day. During school, my iPod went everywhere with me, and when I got back to my room, I listened to stuff while studying and getting work done. Now that it's summer, I don't use the iPod much, but whenever I'm at the laptop, my headphones are running.

I have 6933 songs, 44.34GBs.

I keep about 900 songs on my iPod Touch (8GB) and will be able to bump that to 1500 when I get my 16GB iPhone 3G next week. Every one of my songs is rated, so I use Smart Playlists (based on rating + playcount) to fill all of my iPods, and will do the same with my two new iPhones.

close to 12.000 songs, approaching 80GB of diskspace. I like to have a real library, where I can actually look things up, discover songs I forgot I even had them. For relaxed music listening I do however nearly always use the original cd, or preferably even the LP (about 5000 of the songs are old jazz and blues)

I just wish I didn't have to un-DRM-ify iTunes purchases, because if I attempt a library backup on Data CDs, those don't copy. (preventing me from pirating my own purchases, and moving them to safe storage place, such as DVD discs)

such a hassle.

just thought i'd mention that comparing size of music collections in GB isn't very comparable. i only rip my music in 128kbps to keep as much space on my ipod as possible, or else it wouldn't all fit! but some audiophiles will rip at much, much higher quality.

plus i think we should compare music we legally own. a couple of days ago me and a friend compared our music collections. his was alot bigger than mine, but not once i asked how much he had legally bought and owned. i personally deleted all the music i had obtained illegally but still have a fairly strong music collection. i can't quote the exact amount as i dont have my ipod on me, its about 4 thousand tho :)

My music takes up 62 gigs, it's about 5700 songs. I've become quite a convert to iTunes and playing the music via the airport to speakers around the apartment. What is interesting about my 62 gigs is originally I insisted on AAIF and never MP3. Because of the Apple Store I began to add AAC. Then the size just started getting too big. So I have some MP3 now - and they take up much less space. While I never touched an MP3 years ago, I now feel it's fine for music recorded before the mid 60s. I have alot of old jazz and blues and the limited range of those recordings doesn't suffer with the inferior format - and the music is only at 62 gigs. I also went for Time Machine and back up hard drive because at this point I it would be almost impossible to track down music - I stopped keeping CDs long ago...

How do you accumulate all this music, most I've ever had in iTunes is 100ish songs.

There are two legal ways: One just takes time. At some point I used to buy 10 CDs or so every month. Do that for twenty years, and you have about 30,000 songs. The other method: There are sources of cheap music. You can get an awful lot of classical music really cheap. For example: Bach complete works on eBay, 155 CDs for £69. That would get you from zero to 2000 songs / 8 days / 20 GB of music very quickly. And you can buy some indie music really cheap.

I'm at 24.74 GB, and 4285 songs.

Here's another question for all you people out there: How much of the music on your computer did you pay for, or receive as a gift for holidays and special occasions? ;)

Not one.

I just wish I didn't have to un-DRM-ify iTunes purchases, because if I attempt a library backup on Data CDs, those don't copy. (preventing me from pirating my own purchases, and moving them to safe storage place, such as DVD discs)

That's strange. Backup onto data CDs should be no problem. That is supposed to be the point of DRM: You back it up, I "borrow" your backup DVD and copy it onto my computer, the music doesn't play. You lose your music, you restore from your backup, and the music plays.

I think my music library grew a lot this month. Before it was a measly 4 GB of music that would happily fit into my 8GB iPhone.

But I just got into more music and bands so now its close to 10GB. :)

I have around 10GBs worth of stuff in iTunes, most of it is in Apple Lossless though. I've sold off all of my CDs, but I am starting to collect Vinyl.

So I have ~10GB digital, thirteen LPs, & one 45.

Smashing Pumpkins - "Rarities and B-sides". The whole album is about 120 songs, but I already had a few of them in my library.

Which music conservatory did you go to?

New England Conservatory in Boston. Music was passed around quite a bit there. i also worked at the audio music library where they had over 20,000 CD's and about 35,000 LP's. Their collection is monster.

i have 100gb+ of movies im working on putting into itunes. i was young and windows based, so i have a bunch of .avi's that are in the process of being converted over to mp4->itunes

Over 50,000+ songs in my collection and constantly growing. But, I've been a mobile DJ for over ten years so it's not really a fair comparison to those just collecting for personal use. Computers have made my job a whole lot easier though. It was no fun carrying 500+ CDs around in a big case back in the day.

My Music library says 3,862 songs sitting in 20.57GB... I'm assuming that doesn't count my CDs I don't have loaded on my computer or my movies, etc in iTunes. Mostly, it's Apple Lossless (which is betetr sound for marginally larger space usage). Some songs I have in disc quality, but only a very few.

For physical CDs, I used to have close to 300 but I've started liquidating the ones I'm not that attached to. I've already got them on my iPod and laptop, so I figger I don't need the hard copies anymore. Certain albums I'd just never sell tho.

Wondering why this thread is sitting idly, as I'm wondering the same thing as the thread starter.

Anyway, my music collection is rapidly approaching the 100 GB mark. I have over 11,000 songs, 100% of them are in Apple Lossless format.

EDIT: Just thought I should add, got 5 movies and 1 app in my iTunes as well.

Mine is around 3000 songs, most of which came from my 200+ CD collection. Most of them are in 192 or 256k format, but I have been thinking about re-ripping the collection. I bought a few MP3 albums from Amazon. I never bought anything from iTunes because of the DRM, but I guess that will be changing now. I haven't been buying much music because I am turning into a grumpy old man who doesn't like most new music. Oddly enough, my podcasts take up more room on my 30GB 5th gen than my music collection.

To be honest, I'm not sure how I built up so much music. I'm only sixteen, and only really got into music properly two or three years ago. Before that, I was kinda wandering with the crowd with the music they liked. Now, I like whatever I like, dislike whatever I don't, and have deleted all that old music, so I reckon I'm doing alright :)

To be fair, a lot of those artists are from compilations...

P.S... I'm currently downloading more White Stripes and the Rolling Stones discography too...

As of right this second, I have 5555 songs, which is 16.3 days or 22.15GB's worth. All songs are 128kbps AAC, except for around 35 songs that I bought from iTunes Plus. Most songs are from torrents and Limewire (Yes, I know. I have no money. I feel horrible about it, and I would MUCH rather have the actual CDs), but about 400 of them are from iTunes (collected since 2004).

However, in addition to my iPhone, someone gave me an 80GB iPod video and I've been cleaning up songs I don't like (via both looking at full albums and deleting tracks I don't like and putting my library on shuffle and if a song comes up I don't like, I delete it) so I can use shuffle on it without going through 100 songs before I find one I like.

I had like 6200 songs before I started this process, I believe. ~27GB.

I did a little cleanup of my library before replying in here. I had some CD projects I was working on in iTunes in AIFF format, taking up a lot of space. There are now no AIFF or MPEG audio files. Only AAC, Purchased AAC, Protected AAC, PDFs (digital booklets) and a few MPEG videos (music videos from iTunes).
