Hello boys & girls, I've created some files that can play live BBC radio in iTunes.
I'm looking to see if the files work outside the UK. So if your in USA or France can u download the files and give them a test and leave some feed back.
Instructions (NOTE MAC ONLY)
Download the files and drag on to the itunes icon to import.

Works here, but seems like a lot of noise for no purpose right now..
I think I saw this movie. It was called Metropolis.
Pass.
EDIT: Listening to this (http://www.radio-canada.ca/radio2/) right now, so don't make me come over there and slap you. ;)

I won't be able to try this until I get home but does it put the whole range of BBC stations into iTunes?

it imports fine in iTunes but when I try to play I get silence. The status bar is counting seconds but I hear nothing. Normaly an url to paste in 'open stream' should work.
Here is my favourite Belgian (flemish) station :

Hiya,
I'm anxious to play BBC streams in iTunes. However, when I click "open with" and select iTunes, nothing is played.
Is there a trick to importing the .MOV file into iTunes?

That is exactly what I am looking for.
Dragging the .mov file on iTunes opens the programm, imports the file and plays it. But unfortunately not radio 1 to 4. Why that?
And can you please tell me, how you did that anyway?

Hi, after I have tried to find this solution I found a programm called "Airfoil" by rogue, that basically connects the audio stream of any programm to loudspeakers available on your airport. Even comes with its own DVD player. Works pretty solid and without trouble...

Awesome! I listen to Radio 4 a lot and this works great.
I usually use a menu bar SSB that I made with Fluid (http://fluidapp.com/) and I probably still will, but it's nice to have options.

Can't get any of the stations to work. I'm in Leicester (UK) ISP: BT. Running iTunes 8.0.2 on Leopard 10.5.6.
Edit: The Lyrics field displays the following information for most of the files:
sh: -c: line 1: unexpected EOF while looking for matching `''
sh: -c: line 2: syntax error: unexpected end of file
Hope this helps!

These are brilliant - many many thanks.
Quality seems a bit tinny but must be the whole WMV thing?
What bitrate is being used?
Also radio 2 buffering a lot, maybe a bbc side fault though?
Anyway thanks once again - shame the bbc doesn't have Itunes compatible streams in the first place

Should also add that the world service stream isn't really needed as that does in fact broadcast in a decent iTunes compatible format. Stream can be found here:

Hello boys & girls.
What I've worked out is most stations are setup by BBC to UK only.
This cannot be changed by me. Buffering is a bit ****. Again, not much I can do.
And remember if your having problems getting it to work, you need

installed on your machine.
Someone asked for Talksport. So here the link.

Thanks for the files jimbo, they work *almost* flawlessl :)
I've got a bit of a problem getting the sound out to AirTunes speakers from iTunes - all other songs/radio stations play fine over AirTunes but the output from these BBC Radio stations just refuses to go anywhere except the speakers on the local machine.
Any ideas? Possibly down to an upgrade to iTunes 8.1 last night. I did have it working earlier in the day...

The easiest way to listen to BBC radio on your remote speakers is to download AirFoil.. http://rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/ ($25) it will stream the audio from any program (Firefox, IE, Spotify) to your remote Airport express speakers.. Works really well I have it on both my Mac mini and PC Laptop..

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
This is because for premium events such as Football, Tennis, F1 where there is a worldwide demand/market BBC only buy broadcasting rights for the UK (you know what the first B stands for, right?).
Therefore when the broadcast channel the event is being carried on (e.g. Radio 5 Live) is being streamed, they *have* to prevent the coverage of said event from being broadcast outside the UK.
Often this equates to just blocking the stream completely.
You used to be able to get around this for some events, for example a Liverpool vs Reading game was not available on R5L but BBC Radio Merseyside were happily providing coverage; this doesnt seem to be the case any more.

I've been using these streams in iTunes for ages, however today something appears to have changed. The R2 stream stopped working (mid-broadcast) and likewise R1.
R3, R4 and R5 are still working.
Pretty sure nothing changed my end as this happened whilst I was happily listening to Ken Bruce :o Have had to resort to the browser-based streaming which doesn't have the benefit of SRS iWow.
Have re-downloaded the .mov files from the URL below and opened in QuickTime; same mileage R3 works, R2 fails with Unknown Error.
Interested to know if the OP can clarify any of this meanwhile I've got R3 playing.....

Our iTunes listening days are over. BBC have changed something in the stream to make the files invalid.
I can't create new files with the old software I'm using.
I was using an old version of Flip4Mac (2.1.0.33) PPC that came out few years ago with a bug that was fixed a few days later. The bug was that it allowed you to save from the player menu in the brower that are usually greyed out by the supplier of the content.
This still work but for the BBC streams, it no longer plays on the old version of Flip4mac and so cannot be saved.
BBC in iTunes is no longer!

i've been looking for something like for ages? (clearly, not very efficiently as it's been around for some time)
1. is there a way to get it into the itunes radio section rather than music section?
2. like another replier, i'd like radio london on there, too

Still can't work out why I can only play them locally on my computer but not stream the audio via airport express - anyone any ideas?

Our iTunes listening days are over.<snip>
BBC in iTunes is no longer!
Not so quickly (maybe :-))
If you look at this here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/wm_asx/aod/radio2.asx
This will play in Safari (presumably via Flip4Mac).
I actually pulled the XML in via the command-line:
/usr/bin/wget http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/wm_asx/aod/radio2.asx
-O /tmp/radio2.xml
You'll see all the Radio 2 WMA asx streams in the XML nodes:
<ref href="mms://wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/bbc_ami/radio2/
radio2_bb_live_eq1_sl0?BBC-
UID=14393f9875589e188124b50a6159b72cc39e8bb7d03012e1027810a4041d3254
&SSO2-UID=" />
These have changed from that used by the OP to create the WMA Quicktime streams:
wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/radio3/radio3_nb_e1s1
I loaded one of these newer Radio 2 streams into QuickTime sucessfully (I then repeated the process for Radio 1-5 just to be sure).
I was able to use OxED to edit the original URL in the Radio 2 .mov file to the original Radio 3 URL:
changing this field:
mms://wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/radio2/radio2_nb_e1s1
to this:
mms://wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/radio3/radio3_nb_e1s1
Which was sucessful (i.e the Radio 2 .mov stream file worked, but picked up the Radio 3 stream).
However when I tried to do this for the longer URL from the XML file which includes the UID, the stream wouldn't load into iTunes. I suspect this is because there's a field in the .mov file that restricts or defines the length of the stream URL. So I created a tinyurl:
http://tinyurl.com/c4j6wz
of this stream's URL and put the tiny URL into the stream .mov file but still no joy. When I have a moment I'll check if the paid for version of Filp4Mac allows me to save a stream to a .mov file (I can't tell from the quick look at the feature list). I'm not sure if this is something QuickTime Pro (or QuickTime in Snow Leopard) can do out of the box.
As far as other streams are concerned, the BBC only stream WMA for the national stations (as well as RealAudio RAM streams), the local stations (suchs as London) are only in RAM. This website is quite usueful for looking up streams:
http://www.radiofeeds.co.uk
You can read more about how the BBC are sorting out their streams here:

I have managed to embed the new url's into the movie files. Tullys was almost there. Take the longest url (World Service), paste in the new url and pad at the end with spaces so that the length is the same.

Great Work zandy and tullys! Thanks for this.
I had been using a webclip of the iPlayer radio console on my dashboard, but this is far better!
For those having trouble, I can only imagine you're having problems with reading the contents of the mov files - codec trouble! Make sure you have perian, filp4mac and realplayer installed and up to date. These 3 will mean you can play just about all content, audio or video in iTunes or Quicktime.
I haven't been near VLC in months and months.

I downloaded your zip but don't understand what this sentence means. Where can I find the World Service URL that I need to paste? I can only get the world service radio link to work. All the others don't function.
(I have all the correct codecs as far as I am aware, perian, flip4mac, vlc etc).

Aug 12, 2009, 06:21 AM
You don't need to worry about the re-pasting of the longest URL, this was just an explanation of how we worked around the problem from when the BBC changed the feed URLs which broke the original files.
Make sure you download the zip from zandy (Jun 17 2009):
http://att.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=176611&d=1245235288
not the original zip from efcjimbo (Apr 21 2008)
After that all I needed to do was to unzip and add the directory into my iTunes Library. I've only recently installed perian for other reasons (so as far as I'm concerned only flip4mac is needed to decode these streams).

Hello everyone,
I tried to set this up last night and I have downloaded and have installed the wmv plugin for Quicktime (flip4mac) and downloaded the links posted by zandy (June 17th 2008). When I try to open the link in itunes nothing happens (sits there like its just buffering). Doing the same in quicktime just sits there buffering but not actually playing.
Really would like to get this working, even if it cant be streamed through air-tunes :(

Hi
I noticed you were in Japan, I wonder if you can get this URL to work (IIRC this is the toplevel source for the WMV BBC Radio TWO stream):
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r2.asx
This might be why you can only get the World Service stream to work.
I presume the World Service URL (in the .mov file) is for the WMV stream, I note from http://www.radiofeeds.co.uk/query.asp?feedme=BBC+World+Service that World Service stream MP3, WMV and RealPlayer where as the National BBC stations only stream WMV and RP.

Maybe read my note to the other poster above.

Hi Tullys, thanks for the idea. I can play that link you sent fine. Generally BBC Radio is free for everyone globally. They do restrict the iPlayer though to UK residents only, (which I get around using a proxy server).
I appreciate you taking the time to try and assist me. It is not the end of the world that I can't get it to work through iTunes though. I can still listen from the BBC homepage.

Well having had this working on Leopard, I did a fresh re-install for Snow Leopard.
I'm now in the same boat as you, Andrew. Well specifically, on 10.6.1 with iTunes 9.0.1, without either Perian or Flip4Mac installed the stream opens, the track timer starts but nothing is played (verified by with the Laythe visualiser.
Installing Perian effects no change in behaviour.
Installing Flip4Mac actually makes things work, in that the track timer doesn't even start.
Same config (Perian+Flip4Mac+iTunes 8.x+10.5.8) still works fine.
Using VLC for the timebeing...

I am often listening to BBC World Service radio. I've tried all the downloads in this thread and I have also got Perian and FlipForMac installed and updated, but for me, the only url that works in iTunes is the mp3 link on this page: http://www.radiofeeds.co.uk/query.asp?feedme=BBC+World+Service. It is quite annoying with the Vermont Public Radio asking for money and interrupting once every hour, but otherwise it works fine. It also seems slightly stupid to listen to the BBC via the US, when I am myself in northern Europe. Seems the stream is so low quality (24k mono) that issues with latency doesn't occur anyway.
The RealPlayer link also works, but it needs Real player, the newest version of wich doesn't work on my system. The old version worked fine in Snow Leaopard, but I was stupid enough to update to the newest version, and it crashes at every startup. Anyway, I don't really like having to start Real player to listen, then I could just as well use the links on the BBC web pages.
If there are any other Scandinavians out wich like listening to radio, here is a link to a script wich innstalls Swedish, Norwegian and Danish (and even a Færøese) radio and TV playlists in iTunes: http://mac1.no/nettradio

Maybe the BBC have made it easier or something but I just read this whole topic and then tried it for myself, I had an iPod before I had a Mac, so I knew about and used http://bbcstreams.com/ for my streaming URL's but I think they're the same as the ones mentioned earlier on. Then I just literally googled 'Flip 4 Mac' and I found the download for that http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (It's a horrible installer that's just alien to Mac users, but as long as you click the Customise button at the end to stop it from installing Silverlight and the browser plugin its all good).
Now, after downloading the Radio 1 stream url from BBC Streams, I am now sitting listening to Radio 1 in an almost constant stream (there are very slight drop outs or stutters but nothing very noticeable).
I realise it's playing in Quicktime and not iTunes but this seems good enough to me, I haven't had to install any new program just a Windows Media codec component for Quicktime.

Not exactly what this topic is about tho is it? The clue is in the "iTunes"! ;)

Thanks. This works well. I wish it were in iTunes, but Quicktime's better than using the iPlayer.

Hi everyone,
After the latest break in the files, I've figured out a new way to create them. So here are the new BBC radio .mov files for iTunes. They still won't work with the Airport Express, but I am hoping that there will be some way of streaming them with the new version of AirTunes (ie AirPlay) that comes out soon.
Enjoy,
Andy

I'm in Holland, they work for me. Thanks !!
Shame about not being able to stream using Airport Express, that would be perfection.

It may be old but it's still alive, Zandy the OP has posted a new/working copy of the .mov files:

First of all, thanks to Andy - just downloaded your files and they worked straight off on my mac. I'm now listening to Radio 1 from Australia in iTunes - awesome, thanks!!!
One question, has anyone tried to sync this with a 1st gen Apple TV? (I noticed the comments that it doesn't work over airplay)
I have a playlist with all my radio stations on which I sync with my Apple TV. Other radio stations appear in the playlist on the apple TV, but these ones don't. Any way of getting them to?
Thanks loads

Off the top of my head I don't think this will work because you won't have the WMV QT components on the ATV. On my ATV2 these streams appear under the Music section of iTunes (the Radio section for iTunes I think is sourced from Apple and is very US-centric, with many stations blocked outside the US).
Without 'jailbreaking' the ATV(1) to run vanilla OSX I woudn't have thought there would be a mechanism to get the WMV codecs on there.
But a better answer would be from someone who has the ATV(1) and can do more than just speculate ;-)

It downloads and imports fine, but when I try to play I don't hear anything. It counts up as though it's playing but there is no audio (yes I have made sure the mute is off). Any thoughts?
Thanks

This sounds like you don't have the Flip4Mac WMV QT plugins installed; see earlier in the thread for details.

Hi guys... i have been enjoying the use of this great work to listen to the BBC since I downloaded the files in November 2010.
However last week or so I started to get problems with Radio5Live. Now none of the BBC stations is coming in.
Were the files updated since November ? Has anyone else had problems ?
Thanks..

Although I've contributed to this thread regularly, I've actually been using
Phantom Gorilla's BBC Radio OSX Widget (http://www.phantomgorilla.com/widgets/bbcradio/) for a while now (it works for me and I regularly don't have iTunes running).
Earlier this week I noticed an interruption to, initially, BBC Radio 2; which propagated through the other feeds. When this has happened before it's been due to changes made by Auntie.
Possibly related is the fact that streaming sites operated by the BBC were hacked on Tuesday so they silently served visitors with malware, researchers from security firm Websense said (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/02/15/bbc_driveby_download/)
Regardless Phantom Gorilla (http://www.phantomgorilla.com/widgets/bbcradio/) released an update to their widget this morning which includes:
Version 4.21 changes:
Fixed to be compatible with recent BBC changes.
so until Andy or someone else has time to fix the MOV stream files you'll have to either stick to the WS or find an alt solution. If you have the time and read through the thread you might enough hints to fix the files yourself (not saying that you will but you might).

Yep the .mov streams seem to have broken for me too. Its great to have BBC radio right within iTunes so I look forward to a fix if its possible, but till then the widget seems like a good solution...

I'd love a copy of that zip file too if that's possible?
Trying to find a solution for listening to bbc radio, through an airport express that's controlled by my iPhone, and this seems to be the only way of doing it that I can find.
Let me know if i need to PM you for this.

Dear All,
Just to let you know - found the BBC Radio Streams being listed in iTunes - I'd given up looking years ago, but moving an old apple TV and mucking around with it over the weekend, stumbled upon the streams.
Working really well on apple tv, and my MacBook Pro...
I've since created a playlist in itunes to list them all neatly, then synced that to the apple TV, as that seems to be the best way to access the streams via the remote app (I use the apple tv as a source into a Russound multi-room system) so it works as an audio/video server - some rooms don't have a TV in so to be able to select the music/station via the app is a really nice feature...
All we need now is BBC iplayer, 4OD, ITV player etc support and we'd have a really cooking solution!
Anyway, it's been a longtime coming....
You still need to search under the genres...but here is where I found the streams (might be some more available but these are the ones I've searched for thus far)...
Happy listening.
BBC Radio 1 – TOP 40/POP
BBC Radio 1 xtra – TOP 40/POP
BBC Radio 2 – ADULT CONTEMPORARY
BBC Radio 3 - CLASSICAL
BBC Radio 4 – NEWS/TALK RADIO
BBC Radio 4 LW - NEWS/TALK RADIO
BBC Radio 4 extra (was radio 7) - COMEDY
BBC 5 Live – NEWS/TALK RADIO
BBC 5 Live Sports Extra – SPORTS RADIO
BBC 6 Music – ALTERNATIVE ROCK

I found them ok ... but none of them work for me :(
Also I could swear I did a comprehensive search through these Radio sections about a year ago and I feel certain I would have spotted them...

Fairly clear that these are a recent addition however they seem to be broken today. They were working for me yesterday (behind same corporate firewall) but not this today; back to using Phantom Gorilla BBC Radio dashboard widget.
