I have really weird taste in music
Yesterday my friend was listening to my iPod and she said, "Your music is alright...maybe for a club...but your not in a club so why listen to it? I know that you have your own little club on the train  but still! Get some normal music"

My reply was NO!

I know my music is weird, but I wana no if i am the only one who doesnt follow the normal music crowd so

Post a list of the weirdest songs you own

Mine coming soon...

I listen to a lot of what most people would describe as weird music, if they call it music at all.

No particular songs but artists such as:

Merzbow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merzbow) - near pure noise
James Plotkin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_plotkin) - noise and drone
SPK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPK_%28band%29) - harsh industrial
Sunn O))) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunn_o%29%29%29) - Drone rock
Earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_%28band%29) - From drone to twangy droney country
Final (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_%28band%29) - minimalist electronic
Acid Mothers Temple (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acid_Mothers_Temple)- lond pyschadelic improv stuff (1 album is nearly 5 hours long and has 4 tracks)

I'm also heavily into experimental music ( eg. David Tudor, John Cage)

And I have a soft spot for traditional Tuvan music.

Hmm - just about anything by Holger Czukay would qualify - I occasionally play the odd track from 'Movies' or 'On the way to the peak of normal' on my computer at work just for the 'WTF!?' looks I get when someone walks into the office. :D

For some reason, free jazz tends to freak people out too... ;)

The Late Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered / Covered

I don't know... I just really like listening to his music the way he recorded it!

Anyone who doesn't like the more emotive branches of dance music (like Hybrid's blend of progressive house and string arrangements) is crazy.

Anyway, yeah, I guess I listen to bands that some people would consider weird. Fortunately, since I haven't voluntarily listened to music radio for any extended period of time in about 6 years, I have no idea how relatively weird or not-weird my musical taste is. I just know what I like, and listen to it... and to hell with everyone else. ;)

My music collection does tend to surprise most people. To me none of it is weird. It's just music in, nearly, all it's forms.

Some TG is good. Some is very very bad.

DEVO also have their moments of brilliance.

Oh, and Nara is very much a Doom/Sludge Rock girl.

The song titles are about the only remarkable thing about Red Sparowes, an otherwise unremarkable Explosions/Mogwai-aping post-rock band, of which there have been many in recent years.

Though, I can't exactly justify why I like MONO and can't get into Red Sparowes, exactly. :D

I have been told that I'm insane to listen The Number Twelve Like You. The music is just so random and awkward and heavy....and...well, soft at times. The lyrics also make absolutely no sense (not that you can understand any of it anyways). Examples: Imagine Nation Express, Grandfather, The Try.

Note: this is not even close to club music.

Some really good stuff on here, including some I haven't yet sampled.

I love Merzbow and SPK. One that I didn't see mentioned but also along those lines is Nurse With Wound (http://www.brainwashed.com/nww/), some samples (http://www.blrrecords.com/mp3.shop.php?qart=nurse+with+wound&qalb=&qtitle=).

I am also a fan of Aphex Twin and all of Richard D. James' aliases. And Art of Noise is fun. Some more mainstream stuff I like is Autechre, Fluke, Future Sound of London, Ladytron, Venetian Snares.

I saw mention of Mike Patton side projects. He is definitely an eccentric and talented performer.

Based on 90% of the musical content on my iPod, I guess what would stand out as weird would be the Lazytown soundtrack and Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana. :o

Koichi Hayakawa - Light in Darkness (Radio Edit) - from his EP

It's not especially weird but it's way, way far from what I usually listen to. So when it turns up on the car radio from one of my iPods, it draws comments if a friend is along for the ride.

I've been rediscovering the SPK lately. Found a used copy of Zamia Lehmanni on vinyl earlier this week, forgot how good it was. A lot of 1980s ambient/industrial doesn't hold up well these days, but they pulled it off.

If I really want to freak people out, I just put on Scott Walker's The Drift. Might be the scariest record I own.

A couple of years ago I sold Chocolate & Cheese (with 7"), God WEEN Satan, 12 Country Greats (with Ween transfer) and The Pod. All on vinyl. Made just under £200. I have them all on CD and I needed the money. I reckon in about 5 years I'll spend more than £200 to buy vinyl copies again:rolleyes:

I'm not really keeping up on the newer weird stuff, just some stuff like Mogwai and Sigur Ros. However, I do have some Ralph Records releases from The Residents [Eskimo is demented brilliance], Snakefinger, Tuxedo Moon and early Yello. Also some Faust, Slapp Happy, and Throbbing Gristle.

Brothomstates... It still sounds like a badly tuned radio at times, especially the Qtio album. The track Qtio itself is probably the weirdest. I only bought it on the strength of Adozenaday as it sounds a lot like Plaid (and featured on the sprite t.v comercial).

Anything by the Orb.. I have tryed and tryed but I can't seem to understand what the draw is, still own the live album but it's just weird. Might as well stand in a public place full of talking people whist listening to ambient lift music. Also I think the future sound of london do the same thing, but just better.

I bought the Warp 10+3 remixes album recently, still trying to get my head round that one. I do listen to a lot of IDM though so most of my music is a bit wierd. Occasionally I actually buy normal stuff too.. then it tends to be lounge, jazz or trip hop ... mmmm eclectic.

I guess that means non-mainstream. And "mainstream" is whatever your social group listens to.

My 9 year old daughter thinks all the stuff I listen to is "weird" because it is not Hana Montana or one of the other Disney brand little girl groups. If I listend to that my freinds woud rightly call me "weird"

I do listen to some stuff thak is not really mainstream. 20th century classical music, Bartok, Debussy and so on. and I have lots of vintage 50's and 60's jaz recordings

As far as the weirdest stuff I've got: Probably some of the gabber I've got. Its really close to just being straight noise with something resembling a beat. 'X Cultures' is on of my favourites - the album starts with some woman narrating about how everyone descended from Geodes or something, but after the intro, the songs are pretty good, in a strictly new-age, we-are-one type of way.

While I consider Pop, Dance, Rock, etc weird. All mainstream rates very low on my Musometer.

The strangest music I have in my music library is probably an album of Iannis Xenakis' orchestral and electronic music.

I was going to say something similar, but I think Morton Subotnic is 'weirder.'

Though I think 'weird' is relative to the individual. People who know me would probably expect Morton Subotnic or sine wave music from Sachiko M, but they might find it very weird to find Madonna, Megadeth, and the Pet Shop Boys in there too (I used to have Bananarama on my ipod, but I found that it gave me a headache).

The Lost Episodes album by Frank Zappa is very, very odd.

The weirdest music I listen to?

Hmm

Köhn and Oval come to mind. They'd both be considered noise on some level, but I find Oval to be pretty relaxing on certain albums (Systemich)

Godspeed your black emperor

Did make people think I was a bit weird when I brought Oscar Peterson and Bjork into work though. But it was either that or something like Rob Zombie and Pantera.

It's good stuff, but I greatly prefer Warp 10+1 Influences and Warp 10+2 Classics out of that whole set. 10+1 is an excellent comp of early American and European house and techno that laid the foundation for today's electronic dance music.
