In InDesign, how do you give a word within a sentence, a text link w/ multiple states

I've managed to do this when there's only single word inside a text block, simply by selecting the text block, turning it into a "button" (Object>Interactive>Convert to Button), and then giving the word multiple states using the States palette.

But if I set an entire sentence, then select a word or two within that sentence, the "Convert to Button" option is grayed out.

Any clues? Thanks in advance.

I don't have much (read: any) experience with buttons in ID, but could you create your button in a separate text box and then insert it into the text box with the sentence inline?

A button can only be a frame. Therefore you poster above is correct. You need to make the button 1st as its own frame (word) and then copy and paste it into the copy as an inline graphic. You could also use an anchored object as well.

Another option is to create the button with Acrobat Professional.
