Help! My brand new intel imac is turning off all by itself. Brought it to the apple store and they gave me a new one, plus a free ext. hard drive, but same problem with new one. Tried disconnecting all peripherals with no improvement. Happens at randoms time while using various programs. Computer completely shuts off... have to wait a minute or two before I can turn the computer back on. Tried resetting the power management settings, no help. The computer isnt going to sleep, its completely turning off. I love my imac, but this problem is driving me crazy.

In Console what does system.log show at the time your computer powers off?

When you brought it back to the Apple Store, what did they say? Could they reproduce the problem?
It's very unlikely that two different iMacs would exhibit this same behavior, therefore I'm inclined to believe that it's an external problem. I would start by trying a different surge protector or outlet.

I haven't tried checking the console and correlating it with the shutdowns. Apple didn't mention that, but it sounds like a good idea. When I brought the computer to the Appple store, they didn't even check the computer. They just gave me a new one. Last night I moved the computer to a different part of the house with all new electrical outlets, and still same problem.

This is a shot in the dark but, is your USB cable for the keyboard plugged all the way in? I had my iMac turn off randomly twice in row once and it was because my usb keybaord wasn't all the way in properly. also make sure your Powercable is properly plugged into the back of the iMac. Sometimes its the simple stuff:D
