View Full Version : Site Update: Folding, Photos, Tunes, and News
MacRumors

- MacRumors Folding @ Home Team (http://folding.stanford.edu/teamstats/team3446.html) is currently the 25th overall ranked team (http://folding.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/searchteamstats) and remains the #1 Mac Folding team. If you want to help, see our FAQ (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?threadid=21908) or visit our Distributed Computing forum (http://forums.macrumors.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=19).
- Doctor Q has put together a MacRumors Photo Directory (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41568) which matches faces with usernames of many MacRumors users.
- DailyTunes (http://www.dailytunes.com/) now offers 1190 individual iTunes song recommendations. New song recommendation submissions have been streamlined thanks to weefle. Only a single iTunes song link is required to make a song recommendation and all the necessarily information is pulled automatically from the iTunes Music Store.
- A reminder that MacBytes (http://www.macbytes.com/) tracks other interesting Mac news stories, opinion pieces, and happenings in the Mac Community that may not make it to the MacRumors front page.

you should get that 1100 node super computer to fold for a couple of minutes for your team! Take you to first place perhaps.

We actually together are close to as powerful as the Big Mac. Our team shows 912 active processors this week. I believe dualies count as one (mine seems to). Ok, so BigMac's faster, but not more than a few times faster, than the MacRumors team.
Power to the People :)

Okay, who ranked this thread negative? Just curious - I mean, I think the folding ranking is great, the photo directory is an excellent idea for the MacRumors community, and Daily Tunes is an excellent resource for people.
Sorry, I just don't see any negatives to this. If someone feels different, I have no problems with that at all, it just kind of surprises me. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion though! :)

Some people just get a kick out of posting a negative.
If you left a thread on the main page long enough that said "Apple profits $1Bil and cures cancer" it would pick up seven or eight negatives. And when I say "long enough" I mean about three hours.

I've always wondered why there are a few people in the team who folded a bunch of units but have next to no points. Anyone know? Like, for example, Laslo_Panaflex, who has 2000+ units and hardly any points!

That just proves that MacRumors is the #1 site in the world for everything, from soup (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=23412) to nuts (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41753)!

What bad news is this?
'Oh, but MacRumors isn't the #1 team, so therefore it is bad news'
:confused:
What the hell, arn can you track the people who post negetive for no reason and ban them, please...:rolleyes:

So, MacBytes says that the BigMac is officially #3 supercomputer. So is that true, I haven't read that on Macrumors.

You should have noticed it in these forums since they're the same forums for MacBytes, MacRumors, and DailyTunes. ;)

Interesting. Of about 100 pics, only 7 are female. Probably a pretty good sample of the MR community as a whole.

That's what Wired says... but the really official numbers come out tomorrow (Sun). I'll post it when it comes from the source.

I think it's a bug in the scoring. I went through a few units one @ a time, then suddenly I complete what should be two units & they show up as 43 (projects 912 & 913). The points are right; the work units are off.

I assume you're referring to how many posts it takes to advance to the next "classification", etc.? If so, the info you're looking for can be found in the FAQs if you look there. I can paraphrase here if you like:
~~~~~~
Newbie = 0 - 29 posts
Member => 30 posts
Regular => 100 posts
6502 => 500 posts
65816 => 1000 posts
65832 => 1500 posts
68000 => 1505 posts
68010 => 2000 posts
68020 => 2005 posts
68030 => 2500 posts
etc....
Ever since I upgraded to Windows 2K pro, I have been doing between 60-100% a day on a work unit. It is absolutely insane!
So if yall have machines running say xp, put 2k pro on em! They are awesome for folding!
The people doing SETI haven't been as vocal, nor as successful as the F@H team.
No neglect, just visibility. :)
Well then why doesn't somebody change that trend, and edit this site update to include the SETI@home team? :rolleyes:
When the SETI team does something of note, I'm sure arn will post about it.
In the meantime, the Distributed computing forum (http://forums.macrumors.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=19) includes any and all projects that people want to talk about. How about you post in there and rally the SETI troops?
Cool, thanks! :)
I don't particularly care for "rallying the troops", Rower, I just think both should get equal visibility. :) We may not be 25th overall, but we still have a fairly good team, I think.
Well, SETI was originally much larger than F@H. We had a few core people who actively promoted the team and what the project is about and we grew our membership.
Doing the same wouldn't hurt SETI. If people don't know about the team, then they can't join, and who better to talk about the team than those participating. ;)
Well they did say we have a FAQ.
Located here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?threadid=21908)
simX -- please promote SETI. But again people have shown the disadvantages of SETI.
Like that few people think aliens would use such bad technology.
And that it takes millions of years for the data to get here in the first place...
Also because of the sheer number of users in SETI there have been reports of people getting the same data.
Also SETI has been accused of poor security and the Top Teams Hack the stats.
Also our SETI team has dwindled in ranking... mind if you tell me what # we are ranked at?
That's pretty impressive. What's the setup? My dual G5 2.0 does 2%/hr - or two days/work unit. Does this compare with other people's results?
I don't think they do - the client isn't MP aware so you have to run two copies to use both processors, and it appears as two processors in the stats
http://folding.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/userpage?name=Knox
That's a single dual G5 running two copies of the console client.
My dual 1.25 G4 can do a SETI unit every 3 hours (two processors each finishing a unit every 6 hours). I'm using the command-line version. What's the comparable throughput on a G5?
