Settings for ripping TV Shows at decent quality

I'm in the process of converting my DVD library for my ATV, and while I'm ok with the ATV setting in handbrake for movies ... I'd like to find a setting for my TV Shows that is more economical on size.

I'd like to get the best picture quality, but don't feel a need for Dolby Digital (and most of my stuff doesn't even have that anyway).

Is it just a matter of tweaking the audio options on ATV default? I'd like to keep my hour shows to 500MB or less, and the sitcoms at 250, but don't want blurry pictures.

Any recommendations on combinations of setting adjustments, or should I just try the iPod or iPhone settings?

If you are using handbrake you can select the apple tv setting then change the settings to whichever you want if you want to limit file side use the file size bid and put in the size you want and change the audio settings to stereo or pro logic. The problem with ipodcor iphone settings is that the resolution will be smaller. I would sujest that you use the anamorphic setting as well

I use '1500kbps bit-rate' for all my TV Shows (with H.264).

Still good quality, but adequate file size.

Because TV content is usually interlaced, I run the deinterlace on my TV shows, but the quality is usually horrible. Anybody know how to run the deinterlace and make it look good?

well, if its interlaced use the Slow or slower deinterlacer, HB's Fast deinterlacer is a piece of junk. But it is .... faster (it throws away half of the vertical lines). Also your shows might be telecined instead of interlaced (though admittedly they are usually interlaced). Try the slow deinterlacer if you havent, it should look alot better than the fast deinterlacer.

Is it really that bad? I've been ripping a lot of older TV Show's with AppleTV preset 2 pass with interlacing option set to fast and it's been acceptable. I never tried slower/slow as I figured it would take forever. Maybe I should man up and test it out.

Well, its of course subjective. I mean if you have used it and haven't minded it then thats what its there for. The Slow deinterlacer is quite a bit slower but it does look better. Try a chapter of the same source with the same settings and you be the judge. Thats why it was left in there.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I would really love to get "adequate" versions of some of my older shows onto my network. 500MBs for an episode of Seinfeld (which never really looked all that sparkly) or 1GB for older dramas seems like overkill.

Does the anamorphic give you a better picture with ALL movies and shows, or only certain ones? I am currently just using the AppleTV preset plus a double-encode with turbo first pass... should I also add anamorphic? Are there any downfalls to doing so?

About how large ar the files you are ending up with?

For a 30 minute episode? 190-230MB's.

For TV shows I start with the :apple:TV pre-set in Handbrake then lower the bit rate down to 1800 (average) and make sure to set Deinterlace to "slow." This gives me an average file size between 500-750 MB for an "hour" long drama.

I use ATV settings then change to crf @55% deinterlacing - slower and aac audio and i leave fram rate at 29.97

the resulting shows are approx 120 - 140mb for 23 mins

they look pretty much as good as the original, at least so far anyways :-)

try some settings and see how they work for you.
