howdy all-

i'm new (not only to mac, but to folding@home, which is probably sad since i'm a structural biochem grad student -- ha)

anywho, i was thinking of joining the macrumors team. i've just got a few questions:

1. i've seen links to other pages (in the macrumors faq) describing dual processor setup under mac ... what about linux [is that word forbidden here?]? i've got a few dual boxes that really don't do anything a lot of the time :)

2. is it possible to setup (using the terminal binary) and run folding@home to run while the user isn't logged in (i have not looked at the documentation, but running it w/ a '&' afterwards?) -- i'm assuming this is possible, but just wanted to check. [edit: we've got some winxp boxes too; can these be setup in this fashion? don't flame because we have them, please!]

if so (on all of the above), i may have a >10 processors to donate :)

First off, welcome to the site and to the team.

Linux is most definitely not a forbidden word here. You can download the Linux installers here:
http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/download.html

You can take a look at mc68k's scripts to see what he's doing and modify it as needed for Linux (probably not much).

Here are two previous discussions about running in the background and running on Windows:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19901

thanks for the reply and welcome!

quick question about mc68k's setup_script.command:

is there anyway to tweak the script to change the commands from, for example, 'work' to 'FAHwork' ... 'start' to 'FAHstart' .. as to not conflict w/ other programs i may have installed.

i tried to open the setup_script.command file, but it's just a link rather than a text file script ... so i'm not sure how to make the slight changes.

nevermind, the aliases were in the .login file :)
