iPod Having to Reset

Whenever I plug my iPod into my Mac the "Do not disconnect" screen appears on the iPod then nothing happens.

So I have to soft-reset the iPod then the Mac does detect the iPod and iTunes opens up.

Should I be having to reset it each time I want it to connect to my computer - am I damaging the iPod? 😕
 
My girlfriends ipod did that for a while and she ended up getting a new one. noting would help it no matter what we did
 
i had this issue with a mini a while ago, took it in-store and they gave me a new one in a white box straight away.
