can you partition a 1 TB external hdd for 2 time machine backups?

can you use 1 external hard drive to back up 2 different macs using TM and a partition? if so will it automatically recognize the correct mac when connected?

Yes, but you cannot have the drive plugged in to two Macs simultaneously.
