View Full Version : AT&T Blocking Out June 15-July 12 for 3G iPhone Launch?

Last year (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/05/05/atandt-blocking-out-june-15-july-15-for-iphone-launch/), AT&T limited employee vacation requests between June 15-July 15 in anticipation of the original iPhone launch which took place on June 29th, 2007.
Today, Boy Genius Report publishes (http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/05/06/apple-and-att-to-launch-iphone-3g-a-lot-sooner-than-we-think/#more-3448) another AT&T memo that is again restricting vacation requests, this time between June 15th and July 12th 2008. The reason for the restriction is "to ensure adequate store staffing and to give everyone an equal opportunity to benefit from an exciting product launch." AT&T expects "heavier than normal customer traffic" in their stores due to an "exciting Summer Promotional Launch".
Of course, speculation points to Apple launching their new 3G iPhone during that time. The timeframe is consistent with a previous report (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/04/29/atandt-to-provide-200-subsidy-on-3g-iphone/) that claimed that Apple was targeting "on or around June 27th" to approximately coincide with the one year anniversary of the iPhone launch.
Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/) takes place between June 9-13th in San Francisco, and could serve as the launching ground for the next generation iPhone.

WWDC starts June 9, and June 15 is a Sunday. It would be weird to release it on a Sunday. Maybe a June 13 release? After all, Apple was founded on April Fool's Day, so why not have a major release on Friday the 13th?

WWDC will be the place. Immediate availability.
I hope:
16gig 3G $399
32gig 3G $499
Also if AT&T subsidized, that would be very, very nice.:)
GPS included! Bring it on.

That didn't take long. Now when the iPhone 2 comes out with 3G, we can start the "this network sucks and is way too slow, bring on 4G!!" :p
Seriously though, yeah I agree. Macrumors, the point is clear; 3G iPhone in June. We got it. I can't stress that enough.

Immediate availability is unlikely. They will most likely announce the 3G iPhone at WWDC and then ship it a week or so later.
As for 16/32GB models priced at $399/499, I think you're dreaming. But hey, don't we all?

seriously, I think is very reasonanble. Apple will keep probably the same price points, or even keep the 8gig at $299. They want to move this thing fast and furious.
As for availability, I would not be surprise to see it at the event, but a week later won't kill anyone. ;)

I think that this is going to be a great device and Apple is going to correct most of the issues that existed in the 1st Gen iPhone.
I think that the phone will replace the 1st Generation phone and it will be offered at similar prices as what is currently offered.
One thing I am trying to figure out is why Apple has chosen to keep the iPod Touch one step ahead of the iPhone when it comes to storage.

Well some of them probably will need training, but I would expect a lot of that to be time devoted to supplying and stocking all the stores, and working on the flashy new Apple displays.
I am confident that El Steve-O will debut the iPhone 2 at the WWDC, so he can make a grandstand Keynote presentation, and may even allow online ordering at that time, but the phones probably wouldn't then start shipping out until the 27th (ish).

So it may possibly sooner than some initially thought. I was guessing that summer meant late August and still didn't give the anniversary thread much credit but I'm starting to believe that it may actually happen in late June. The more credible rumors the better. Time is drawing near.

Doesn't the FCC need to approve the new iPhone before it can be sold? In the past, once the FCC does approve of a device, the seller has taken at least 6 weeks before the item goes on sale.
Even if the FCC announcement came out today. The earliest Apple could have the sale would by Wednesday, June 17th. This would rule out WWDC.

Whats the streak of consecutive days with an iPhone rumor at now? I think we're in for one a day until the launch. Nothing but good news for Apple fans and shareholders as you can't ask for better viral marketing than this product.
Meanwhile, I'm one offer completion away from getting my "free" iPhone from Transcendent Innovations. But I'm holding off completing my year long odyssey until they release the 3G. Don't want to get stuck with a crappy outdated 1st Gen iPhone now.

I hadn't initially planned on replacing my iPhone this year since I just bought it in October, but now I'm going to be moving to the UK at the end of the summer and will be forced to buy a new phone since my current one won't work over there (unless I unlock it and I have no desire to do that). So it looks like I'm going to have to get a new iPhone. Darn... :)

It's not the price of the phone that concerns me. I can usually take a 1X hit to the wallet for a gadget I really want. What I'm wondering about is if AT&T is going to use rollout of 3G to raise their monthly data charges. Does anyone have any experience in 3G costing more than Edge with other programs? If it's going to cost more per month I'm likely sticking to my gen 1 phone.

-anthonyThe hoopla surrounding a new iPhone might give them an excuse to raise rates, but hoopla is temporary. I'd expect (and hope) that competition with other carriers will be a stronger factor affecting rates.

With all the iPhone talk, I can't believe it's only been out just a year. Here's my dilemma...I'm walking around with a Blackberry 7100t that I can't stand and I got in December 2004. Did I mention the thing is ANCIENT?
Anyway, I've been holding off for v2.0 of the iPhone and now it seems that pretty much 1 year to the day later, it's coming. Did I mention that the iPhone launch coincides with my wedding anniversary (June 29th) which makes it oh so easy to remember when it came out ;)
The real problem is that I read somewhere that AT&T has an exclusive on the iPhone for the first 24 months which means in just 12/13 months we could be buying the iPhone through T-Mobile, my current wireless carrier.
What do all of you think? Would you wait?

Not wanting a version-1 product, I held out until the 16GB model came out. Having spent over $500, it is hoped that it will last me until the third iPhone with 4G. GPS sure would be nice, but hopefully the new software update (even if requires a fee) will breath enough life into my iPhone to last another year. The ability to run resident apps will make fast Internet connection less of a priority.

Quite frankly, I don't care what the hell they upgrade on this phone, 3G I'm assuming (sweet), Gps would be nice, I can't imagine after all the hype about them adding gps that they would forgo it now, it would be a pretty big letdown on apple's part, which they rarely tend to do. The stock of the activation company went down 40% today. Apparantly to get the $200 discount on an iPhone with ATT you have to activate AT ATT. One wonders if then activations will occur real time in Apple stores as well on the ATT network to be "competitive". One wonders if there will be an online version of activation concurrent with sale at online stores at ATT and Apple.
Given the CRUSH of sales likely, this should be interesting. Maybe the over the counter price will be HIGH to offset this.

For a V2 iPhone, I would break the contract and move over. If the V1 version was nice, I expect V2 is going to be superb. Apple wants and needs to keep evolving it to keep the competition far away. While we figured out a lot of what it will contain ..... I am sure that Apple is holding a few more secrets about V2 of the iPhone.
Break contract specially if given a price break.

If that's the only thing you're trying to figure out, you're in luck! Because I (and I'm sure many others) will help you - they add more storage to the Touch because there is more room in the Touch, since it lacks the phone modem which takes up as much space as the 16 GB memory chip in the 16 GB iPhone.

These dates don't seem possible to me. My understanding was that we would find out about 6 weeks prior to release due to the FCC. A June 15th time frame would indicate a 16th (monday) or 17th (tuesday... more likely) which ironically is 6 weeks away from today.

Apple is draining inventory for version 1, and it makes little sense to do that and then re-launch it with a discount. The 200 bucks will come off the price of the new phone if you activate it through AT&T, the reason being that unlocked phones will be easy enough to get from other countries where the idea of a contract is ridiculous.
Like every other phone discount, it'll only be available if you're not currently a customer or you're past your contract and are eligible for an upgrade. So if you bought version 1 last year, don't expect to get the discount.

These dates don't seem possible to me. My understanding was that we would find out about 6 weeks prior to release due to the FCC. A June 15th time frame would indicate a 16th (monday) or 17th (tuesday... more likely) which ironically is 6 weeks away from today.

Umm, try 5 years...
Umm, try that's a bad, unverified rumor started in a poorly written USA Today article last year. T will distribute and support the iPhone for 5 years. The chance that T has a 5 year exclusive is slim to none.

This sounds very interesting however, I'd like to see the actual memo. I'm sure it was handed down via company email or other internal communication medium.
I'm 100% certain the memo was delivered by pigeons. iPigeons.

. While we figured out a lot of what it will contain ..... I am sure that Apple is holding a few more secrets about V2 of the iPhone.
Haha... while some of the speculation MAY be right in the end, no one has figured out anything. Sure it makes sense, but no one actually knows.
And yes, Apple IS holding a few more secrets about V2 of the iPhone..... everything except that it will be 3G!!!
But yeah, I'll be picking one up as soon as it comes out...my verizon contract has lapsed and is just going month to month now, just waiting to be canceled.

Lawl, 8mp camera phone. What in the world do you need an 8mp camera phone for. It has no real lens! You want 8mp and then use the "digital zoom". Le sigh.
Its nice. when i zoom-in to take photo i still got 5mp and sth.

I really fail to see the logic behind them keeping version 1 on the market.
If they don't keep an edge phone on the market, they will lose sales to individuals wanting to unlock their phones for other providers such as tmobile.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think ATT and Tmobile's 3G are compatible.
In their last financial call they indicated that a significant number of iphones were probably sold to people using something other than ATT (or the designated provider in each country)

Of course they are. Thats what standards are for.

That didn't take long. Now when the iPhone 2 comes out with 3G, we can start the "this network sucks and is way too slow, bring on 4G!!" :p
Bring on 5G...
Wait, why not call it G5! ....and it could be released next...(you can fill in the rest)

Enough with the hype and rumors , just release it already :)
I know my local AT&T store the management has heard nothing about this NO time off , they have nothing on it and the local manager is a Apple fanatic and cant wait for the 3G model. He and his boss said nothings come down from higher up and that it mite just be certain area's that are doing the limitation on the time off / vacation time frames

How hilarious would it be if it ended up having new features, but NO 3G! Could you imagine the riot that would ensue on the forums?

i think they should keep the 8gb edge iPhone for people who dont need the extra 3G and shouldnt have to pay more
8GB iPhone Edge ...= $199 please
I'd like to see the 8gb 1G iPhone for $99 with two year contract. They're $400 now, release a new model and drop the old price by $100, and then add a $200 contract discount and I'm in for sure. At $200 it's still a bit pricey if it's replaced by a faster (both internal CPU power and wireless internet speed), higher capacity, GPS enabled, better/multiple camera model.

No they're not. T-Mobile is 1700/2100; AT&T is 850/1900.

But the iPhone is a quad-band phone already (although I think the frequencies are 850/900/1800/1900) (and T-Mobile in the U.S. operates primarily on the 1900 frequency).

Would you wait?
umm, im not trying to be a d:apple:ck but i believe that it was a 5 year exclusive and you may correct me if i am wrong but the only way for apple to go to t-mobile also is for at&t to not hold up a certain number of iphone sales?

know hes right they are not compatible thats why its pointless for t-mobile users to have a 3g iphone unless hackers can somehow make it work with t-mobiles 3g(wich im sure they can)

Yeah I have been wondering about this myself, also I would like to know if the contract only applies to this version, or if apple could use some sort of scam like change the name to "iphone 2.0" and be free from the contract.:apple:

So isn't the new Blackberry with 3G and touch supposed to be released around the same time frame? I doubt that anyone walking into an AT&T store and buying an iPhone is reason to rearrange vacation times, seeing how you do not go through activation at the store and if you have problems you call in to the 800 number and pray you get someone with some common sense and knows what there doing.
