Video Resolution: Guidelines as opposed to rule?

So I'm getting an iPhone. I've decided. :p

I am wondering if Apple's specs for the iPhone are Rules or just guidelines. Right now the requirement is 640x480 as the max size - however I have some video at 704x400 which is less pixels overall than 640x480. Are movies artificially limited to 640 pixels wide or is it just a 307,200 pixel limitation?

of course, the iphone screen isnt pure 16:9 widescreen.... so there will be that difference.

it will scale it to fit the screen, (your 704x400) you can zoom in to fit the screen (i.e. fit height, which is BAD for widescreen type movies) or zoom out to fit length. either way, the movies should be fine.

Here's one:
The video before wouldn't play using QT (bad movie atom or something). Reencoding in Visual hub with iPhone setting works - new movie looks like the old one - but playing the new file in VLC I have to tell it to be 16:9, it won't automatically detect it. Is there something wrong?

I put a 2 minute sample in my public iDisk folder, login to jonshipman and take a look at the mp4 there.

Ars Technica (http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2008/04/07/iphone-ipod-touch-support-720x576-rather-than-640x480-video) posted an article about this recently. They found that a movie as big as 853x366 played fine.
