I'm somewhat of an audiophile, but an audiophile on a budget no less. I care about the sound I hear, and I want it to sound pure and smooth. Now the hard part...under $35. I just bought some skullcandy smokin buds, and will be returning them tomorrow because of a defective connection. I also paid $32 when they list for half that on the internet.

under $35 cannot be done if you are audiophile.
even under $350 is tough.
having said that
I got myself a pair of skull candy inked and the sound much richer than my v-moda's
and way better than the apple in ear ones.

I don't think you can be an audiophile if you're aiming for $35 earphones.
If you mean "I care about sound quality", then I'll recommend a pair of Sennheiser CX300s. I have them, and they're great for the price. Also, I can't find another pair of in-ear earphones that fit well.

Try the JVC HAFX66 (http://www.amazon.com/JVC-HAFX66-Air-Cushion-Earbud-Headphones/dp/B000WH83AA/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1210431327&sr=8-2). Not audiophile, but good enough for virtually everyone on a budget. If earclips aren't a problem try the extremely ugly Koss KSC-75. They're not bad, and definitely have better sound for the buck than very low end in-ear phones.

Jays (http://www.jays.se) earphones are fantastic for the price, especially the dJays.

I realized audiophile was a bit of an overstatement after I typed but it was late and I was too tired to change it. Let me correct myself. I need some quality earbuds at a nice price.
