My guess is this:
The 3G iPhone might be announced this week and for sale in the near future. I think they may want to sneak it out to avoid the rush they experienced last time. Hype is good for sales, but not so good for instore purchasing and activation, as we saw on Jun29.
The 3G iPhone will carry either a 1.4.1 firmware or the latest 2.0 beta software. It will be updated to the official 2.0 only a few days later.
This makes sense so that customers can immediately begin to take full advantage of the 2.0 features/app store with the faster, more cooperative data service.
As for the model itself, I don't think they are going to go backwards with the construction. Aluminum...>plastic? This makes no sense and is the exact opposite of their progress with the rest of the product line.

It seems RIM made a good move and brought out their 9000 before the new iPhone. A lot of people are still skeptical as to whether or not the up coming iPhone will be good for business. RIM has obviously established themselves as one of the top electronics manufactures that produce phones for business oriented people. RIM's stock is up now for awhile. I think it would have been bad for RIM to release the new phone along the same time Apple.
Think RIM had an idea of the iPhone launch date due to the fact that the 9000 is AT&T exclusive for only 6 months? (Not sure of the exact details of that) And as a result put out their phone to get a bunch of sales under their belt before Apple releases their product and establishes the fact that the iPhone is the next up and coming business device to have.
Steve has really started to press the iPhone as the best business device to have. I wonder if we will see the new iPhone come out ahead of schedule just for the sake of having it out there before everyone gets a whiff of the new blackberry? I doubt that's what it's all about... But I wonder if that thought at least crossed some Apple bigwig minds.
Anyway, just a random thought.

Many possibilities here. Might not be a corporate AT&T store, might be unknowledgeable salespeople, might be sold out of iPhones and is sick of fielding questions about it. Any number of things could be going on here.
True. But then why was there the same response from the customer sales rep over the phone? Why are the AT&T employees so vested in getting me not to buy an iPhone? I'd think that anything that would get me to switch to AT&T (I told them I'm currently a Verizon customer) would have them desperate to please me. If I say I want an iPhone, why won't they sell me an iPhone contract?
Perhaps greed is a stronger motivation than happy customers. I'm sure AT&T makes far more money from people who opt for the LG.

I myself truly doubt it but I know there s a rumor that the new iPhone will have an OLED screen. These OLED screns are known for their extreme back. Could the new iPhone black be called that do to its OLED screen with very deep, dark, rich balcks? Odds are Apple (or Steve really) will want to update more to the phone than just 3g.
I don't think the tech may be ready yet but hey... Maybe it is.

You know, if Apple had just told Tony Stark to build the 3G iPhone, Tony Stark would have built it in a cave with a box of scraps, powered by an arc reactor and looking crazy cool it would have been completed months ago.
Bit**es don't know about Tony Starks engineering skills.

You can dress up a turd to look like a Mr. Big, but the fact remains that it's still just a turd that looks like a Mr. Big.
RIM actually make some decent devices. Granted the UI is not as pretty or slick as the iPhone but its very usable and the new Bold UI looks great.
Calling the Bold (or any recent blackberry) a turd would be somewhat harsh, there are far worse phones out there that'd deserve that label. Any Windows mobile phone comes to mind...yes even the Touch diamond, Symbian phones would be another example
The blackBerry Bold has a tiny calculator screen.
Thats not a problem for me, i can't even remember the last time i used the calc app on the iPhone
I hope iPhone 2 wows me, i really do but i just don't see it at this point. I don't care about the App store...i don't even have any app on my iPhone now so means nothing to me. 3G in all its goodness is still dependent on the network provider. O2 3G...sucks!, so no real benefit again there.
Question then becomes is it worth it to pony up £270 or more + contract? then again i'm just speculating but point is, the phone has to have some strong incentives for me to upgrade. Otherwise i'll just get the Bold, especially seeing as i'll be able to get it significantly discounted should i decide to

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet because I haven't taken the time to read all these posts but I think they are going to have a choice of silver AND black anodized aluminum, just like the iPod Classic.
I just don't see them changing the form factor because I read somewhere that just a few months before Jobs introduced the iPhone at MacWorld they were not happy with the case and changed it at the last minute. If they fretted over the appearance like they did, I don't see it changing except for color. Has the iPod Classic form factor changed all that much since it's introduction?
A lot of the other phone manufacturers offer different colors, I'm sure Apple is doing the same.
By the way, that chrome bezel will look sharp on a black anodized aluminum case.
Peace, out.

What if the original (current) iphone is going to be considered "black" (hence the webpages sporting accessories) and the new phone being something else, maybe looking more "air" like? Might be also a sign that the new phones accessories prol wont be interchangeable with the current models. Maybe thats saying that the new model will be completely different (1.5 x bigger).
Just throwing stuff out there.
Cant wait for whatever the new one looks like Regardless!

I agree, I think a black aluminum case would look really slick on the iPhone and I could certainly see them offering that as an option. Given that they've been pushing so much towards "going green" I don't think they would backtrack and go with a plastic case instead, but who knows. I just think a glossy black case would suck- not only would it attract fingerprints, but it would likely scratch easily, making it look worse with time.
A solid black aluminum iPhone with the chrome bezel would look fantastic- I'd even prefer the bezel to end up looking more like that on the iPod touch, actually

Hopefully Apple and AT&T can hook up with an insurance company and provide insurance for the blasted thing.

I'd be very surprised if they did this. Apple knows there are thousands of people waiting for the 3G iPhone. If they were to release one in the next few days but then release a better phone a month later they'd never hear the end of it from upset consumers. Thousands of people who ran out to buy what they thought was THE new iPhone would try to return them a month later to get the new one.
well apple didn't promise to you or any one else anything, so they free to do whatever they want to !!! :apple: it can be quite upgrade without any show. But on June 9th Steve will pop out from hes pence new toy ... for us " saying here the new iPhone for you human to play MORE with SDK" Gps, 3G and bunch of other stuff

right, AppleCare only covers hardware failures and the like... any physical damage done to it (whether intentional or accidental) is not covered by AppleCare. I would imagine if you want insurance the covers damage, you could probably get it included on some form of home owner's insurance or something similar.

I vote for Apple announcing the new iPhone tomorrow, Tuesday 5/13, for availability starting June 12, when AT&T employees are leave-restricted.
I can't imagine Apple having the iPhone entirely off the market for even 4 weeks, but that does create a nice gap to avoid the 'bought it yesterday, now there's a new version' issue.
Remember that everyone at AT&T stores works on commission - if LG is offering a $25+ spiff on their phone, and the iPhone isn't in stock, which one do you think the sales guy want to talk to you about?

well, I'm not sure what Verizon is... what is the difference between EVDO and 3G?
3G is just a huge umbrella term for any "third-generation" cellular technology. There are two main families of technical standards, "3GPP" and "3GPP2", which people usually refer to as "GSM" and "CDMA" for the original technology used in each family.
"GSM family/track"
2G = GSM (voice and data)
2.5G = GPRS (data only - GSM used for voice)
2.75G = EDGE (data only - GSM used for voice)
3G = UMTS (voice and data)
3.5G = HSDPA (data downlink) / HSUPA (data uplink)
"CDMA family/track"
2G = CDMA
2.5G = CDMA "1xRTT"
3G = CDMA "EV-DO" rev. 0
3.5G = CDMA EV-DO rev. A / rev. B
Importantly, Verizon wireless and Sprint use the CDMA track, While AT&T and T-Mobile have GSM/UMTS networks.
So besides 3G, what else do we expect this new iPhone to have?
There needs to be quite a few killer features to persuade someone like me, who only bought their iPhone 7 months ago (UK launch) to go out and buy a new one.
-larger capacity?
-GPS?
I'm hard pushed to think of much else they can do on the hardware side. Very prepared to be surprised though.
There is a lot of other threads with literally ten's of pages dedicated to this very thing. I think GPS will be included, 24/32GB flash is possible, definitely an upgraded camera, and possibly a forward facing camera. What I would LOVE TO SEE is them use that special LCD display that you can actually uses in direct sunlight. It somehow reflects the sunlight without washing out the screen, it actually improves the display contrast. amazing, eh?
Thats not a problem for me, i can't even remember the last time i used the calc app on the iPhone
HAHAHAH.. He is NOT talking about a calculator application on the blackberry having a small interface. Let me rephrase what he said: "the Blackberry has a TINY screen LIKE A CALCULATOR".

well they're not going to continue to sell the older model.
The only semi concrete conclusion I can draw from AT&T's website is that there's going to be 2 models available at launch.
And it's also possible the only difference between the models is going to be color. Original and Black.
And off course there's also the slim chance we may see an announcement Tuesday May 13th 2008. simply because of the lack of current iPhone availability.

I'd like to get the $59.99 plan level of service for both mine and my wife's future iphone. What would that pricing be? I have heard an extra $20-$30/month for the other phone for a total of $80-$90.

No. Verizon's network is CDMA. All current iPhone implementations are GSM and will remain so for AT LEAST the 5 year exclusivity agreement in the US. Putting development time/money into a CDMA iPhone for the extremely limited outside-US CDMA market wouldn't make sense.
GSM is what pretty much the whole world uses. Verizon/Sprint/Alltell are just the oddballs :)

So we could definetly see AT LEAST Jailbroken 3G iPhones that could run on Verizon's new "open" network later this year?
NO. Verizon Wireless and Sprint have CDMA based networks, while AT&T and T-Mobile have GSM networks. Even worse, T-Mobile doesn't even have a 3G/UMTS network running yet, so there is really no alternative to AT&T when the 3G iPhone comes out -- although you could run it on T-Mobile and just get EDGE speed.
In the future, although Sprint is building out a WiMax network, which is a totally different technology, Verizon is finally going to switch over and Join AT&T and T-Mobile in rolling out future 4G/LTE networks. LTE is the future evolution of GSM/UMTS networks. So In 3-4 years when AT&T and Verizon have their 4G networks up on the 700mhz band, we may be able to switch between providers with the same phone. At the least, it will lead to a greater selection of phones since it simplifies manufacturing. Also, it appears Europe and much of Asia are also going to launch an LTE 4G network in the future.. so assuming the hardware supports all the bands, it will be possible to roam around the world while getting the same fast data access as your home country (hopefully).

I agree Apple will probably never create a CDMA/EV-DO iPhone since LTE/HSOPA is just around the corner for Verizon, AT&T and eventually TMobile. But to say that CDMA is "Extremely limited outside the USA" and that "the whole world uses GSM" is BS. That seems to be a popular myth, and is probably caused by Europe overwhelmingly having GSM networks.

It's a great idea if you are up for the task :). Just have to swap out the GSM module for a CDMA/EV-DO module, then reprogram the firmware with the SDK from Qualcomm to connect up to Verizon's network and then write the OSX drivers for the CDMA module. Maybe Apple has a large part of the radio module code abstracted away just in case they decided to make a CDMA/Wimax iPhone. Anyone have advanced knowledge of the iPhone underpinnings? perhaps the black iPhone will be similiar to the MB vs MBP. a cheaper alternative to a higher end product. that would be my guess since they want this device in the hands of the masses. although imo having more providers will do that. at&t only is not going to cut it. i for one would be more than happy to buy an iPhone through my current provider, but i'm not willing to switch simply to get an iPhone.

Interesting that the links that were set up to show whether Apple retail stores had iPhones in stock are now showing whether MacBook Airs are in stock, instead. I'm assuming that either this is an error in coding, or there are simply no iPhones available at any Apple stores, which would indicate that an announcement of an upgrade is likely to come very soon. If you have nothing to sell and have given no indication that you will have something to sell, then consumers will take their business somewhere else. And you know that Apple doesn't want them to do that. Expect availability of iPhones or an announcement about a new model very soon, probably some time this week.

AT&T's site has a 4GB iPhone option on their site right now for existing users:
I think that is just to specify which iPhone you own -- like a customer profile or something.

I for one would be more than happy to buy an iPhone through my current provider, but i'm not willing to switch simply to get an iPhone.
Unfortunately, for Sprint or Verizon, that's probably not going to happen since it would require a large commitment from Apple to build a CDMA iPhone, and the exclusivity is most likely longer than it will take for Verizon and AT&T to move to a common 4G/LTE network (2010-2011). If you have T-mobile, you could unlock an iPhone, but you'd be limited to using EDGE for data --- at least until T-mobile builds out their 3G network.

perhaps the black iPhone will be similiar to the MB vs MBP. a cheaper alternative to a higher end product. that would be my guess since they want this device in the hands of the masses. although imo having more providers will do that. at&t only is not going to cut it. i for one would be more than happy to buy an iPhone through my current provider, but i'm not willing to switch simply to get an iPhone.
I dont think Apple will have no AT&T exclusivity on the low end iPhone but have it on the high end expensiver one, more people will buy the cheap one and Apple will lose money.

That has been set like that since the Air's have been arriving. Unless Apple is dumb as hell, i'm gonna assume its no error in coding. And that is one helluva error, because consider all of the ICS people reporting their stock. They're not all going to "accidentally" type in "MBA in stock", when they meant iPhone. And, Apple demands 99.9% accuracy in the Back of the House, there would be no room for an error like this. It would simply be impossible.

How do you exactly get to the place of the AT&T wireless website where you can choose between iphone and iphone black. I've been looking but haven't found anything..
Same here, ive looked all through AT&T's site and cant find a reference to iPhone black. when i log in, and choose to upgrade my phone, it just shows me the 8 and 16GB models.... Anyone have a link to get to the page that gives the Black option? thanks!

It's not where you click to upgrade the phone. It's the screen where you select your current phone in your AT&T profile.

The UK Apple store has now got the price missing on the iPhone - there's something going on.
alot of the international stores have been like that for awhile...
in fact, i think the US may be the only store with the price posted on the main store page.
i know its off of:
store.apple.com/uk
store.apple.com/ie
store.apple.com/fr
and i cant remember where else the iPhone is now

I've been checking periodically O2's webpage all day today and adding an iPhone to my basket just to see if anything interesting happened. Well, just now, I checked again and to my surprise I found that you are not able to add an iPhone to your basket anymore, even though it shows up as available. That was not there a few hours ago!
EDIT: They seem to have fixed it now!! But I'm telling you, I tried several times, only to have an "invisible" item added to my basket but not really showing up!

It was a joke about the fact that there is more than one EST. Once again, the ignorant american didn't know that, nor check my location. :p

People are talking about the possibility of an imminent iPhone (Black?) release - as in this week, or even today.
Surely Steve would not announce this without calling a special event?? I would have thought that such an announcement would warrant more than just a press release. I know that the arrival of the device will be little surprise to anyone, but it's still a pretty damn important one.
An event needs invites for the press, about a week in advance, right?

It depends I would think. If there are major updates to the iPhone, or even the release of two new iPhones, then yes there will be a special event. If they are just putting 3G on there then there might not be one.

The store often goes down around lunchtime in the UK so I guess there's still time. Kind of not too hopeful though.
Does seem odd that everywhere is pretty much out of stock though with no firm news of a new iPhone. Fingers crossed.

I've just got off the phone with Steve. He was in a meeting but came out as he owes me a favour.
I said that the guys on macrumors were going stir crazy with all th gossip and could he for once and all tell me what the score is on the new iphone.
He told me everything. I have therefore listed the info below for everyones benefit.
New iphone announcement on Thursday 15th May, phone available from Friday 16th in UK and USA. June 10th everywhere else.
New iphone is available in two formats. Black one aimed at business users and white for everyone else.
Both have 3G and GPS. Black one has no camera and is 16G. White one is 32G and 3.2mp camera.
Announcement in June at developers conference is launch of iplay? (didn't get time to ask about what iplay is as bill gates interupted our conversation - he wanted to know is I was free to play poker tonight!)
So there you go. Don't say I don't do anything for you!;)

Calling the Bold (or any recent blackberry) a turd would be somewhat harsh, there are far worse phones out there that'd deserve that label. Any Windows mobile phone comes to mind...yes even the Touch diamond, Symbian phones would be another example
I'm comparing the RIM devices as turds to iPhone which they *are* comparatively. :D Believe me when I say I was the happiest boy alive to ditch my series40 nokia for iPhone.

just had a look at the lack of pricing on the UK website - this is very strange and I dont recall this happening. If they are prepping the stores like this ten I think we should look for a 'silent' update and maybe not even a bump in memory specs.
Remember the touch 32gb actually has 2 16gb chps in . this is possible due to the lack of telephone internals in the touch so unless there s a 32gb chip out there I think we might not see it in the iphone yet
but like everyone I dont know and I am VERY excited about this, reminds me of the MBP update where I nearly exploded with anticipation and then bought one 15 mins after the announcement!!

I just had a chat with an online representative on the Apple Store UK. Basically, they don't have a clue when they're going to be getting any more iPhone stock and suggested going down to one of their retail stores. Either they genuinely are being kept in the dark or they're keeping very tight lipped. Either way, I'm not at all sure we'll be seeing any announcement before WWDC, despite the fact that there seem to be no iPhones available.

I don't know if this was mentioned yet, but I thought this was funny.
RIM says the delay for bringing such a device to the market is that it wanted to make sure that battery life wouldn't be sacrificed at the expense of including the 3.5G technology
From here (http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9940313-7.html). Man, that screen really is tiny. Or it's the size of the iPhone's and the Blackberry is just huge. Either one would surprise me. Blackberries have been pretty large. Even with a small screen, this one looks to be about as thick as my first phone back in the 90s.

I have been skeptical everytime someone has said "this is the week" over the past month or so, but I actually thought we'd see it today. Oh, well.... Maybe later this week, or next week, or next week, or next week...

i really dont think a 32 gb iphone will come out until the Touch get bumped up. right now the only advantage the Touch has is it has more space so i would expect the update at WWDC and then an upgrade up to 32 some time in the fall when they upgrade the ipods.

If they have not announced it yet today then they are not going to. We will just have to wait and see what Apple's plans are. My current verizon contract is not up until the end of July so I have some time to wait before I can switch.

If they were going to release them at 6pm today, I would think that you would have been able to order them for a day or more already. For example, Leopard was released at 6pm on the day of launch- however, you could preorder before then, which allowed the preorder people to have their copy delivered on the day of launch, instead of only being able to order that day. Because of this, many people (myself included) received their copy of Leopard earlier in the day.

In my opinion we will see the new iphone at WWDC. I know that it's been said that it isn't a developer's item, so why wait till then. I don't think that that is entirely true. This would be the perfect time to hype the SDK some more and show the latest and greatest programs that developers have made with the SDK.
Second reason I think that we won't see it for a month from now.....
Remember last year when they dropped the price of the iphone and had to refund hundred dollar bills. While it probably didn't hurt the Apple bottom line, I imagine that it was a huge pain in the a**. If I was steve, I would gladly give up 1 month's worth of iphone revenue (it's been out of stock on apple.com for several days now) for this reason. While the phone IS out of stock, the press from the hype and anticipation of a "3G" Iphone is way better PR than having to hand out rebate checks
my 2 cents....any rebuttals?

I just called AT&T and spoke with a sales rep. It was surreal. I told the rep what I was looking for and his response was, "Yes sir, we can certainly help you with that. Have you seen the new LG phone?"
Well, today I stopped into the local Apple store and mentioned this whole incident. The associate was puzzled by it, insisting that AT&T has a five year contract with Apple. Her only thought was that since the iPhones were out of stock, the person from AT&T was just trying to push whatever phone-du-jour that they had.
There's another AT&T store at the same mall where the Apple store is, so I walked over there. The person I spoke with seemed very knowledgeable, courteous and helpful. He understood what I wanted (a bundled communication package) and did his best to put one together for me. But AT&T doesn't yet offer Internet service in my area. He was willing to sell me a USB cellular receiver to plug into my computer, but that would cost $60 a month per computer. That sounded absurd, when I would already be paying $60 a month for the iPhone's data service.
If I could tether the iPhone's Internet to my desktop, all would be right with the world. But I don't think AT&T is heading in that direction.
