This is getting interesting. I am still thinking we are going to hear something today if not tomorrow. It's becoming an expectation now that the BlackBerry 9000 is official and RIMs stock is up almost $6.0 so far. Although RIMs new phone is not generating nearly as much buzz as an Apple update would.

Did anyone else spot the line at the bottom:
"This line is eligible for equipment discount pricing when you sign up for a 2-year service agreement. You can also take advantage of our no-commitment pricing option."
I wonder if this a generic message that applies to the users account, or is this supposed to apply to the iPhone Black.

AppleInsider has noted that AT&T's website for existing users now has an option for a black iPhone (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/05/12/att_now_showing_iphone_black_model_in_device_listing.html).
http://images.macrumors.com/article/2008/05/12/115459-black iPhone_300.png
There have been rumors that Apple's upcoming 3G iPhone would come with a glossy black back (1 (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/04/25/3g-iphone-to-include-gps-be-only-slightly-thicker/), 2 (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/04/30/iphone-accessory-makers-detail-3g-iphone-design/)). While there have also been some reported image leaks as well, the authenticity of such images remains highly doubtful.

It's just a generic message. It's indicating that the line is eligible, not the phone you choose. It also says that if you choose the plain iPhone.

well, this could make the claim completely bogus, but it could be part of an at&t attempt to hide the release as they prep their site. Keep in mind that AT&T isn't going to be the only carrier this time

I think we're going to find that that "case" picture that we all saw from Hong Kong was a part from the new phone. (not an external case as many have speculated and reported)
Which makes sense, because in that picture it was next to a part of the current iPhone (the "metal" back of the current iPhone)
It's also tapered to hide a little bit of the girth needed to support more battery for 3G.

And, just like someone else said in the AppleInsider forums, the other phones that are listed with the "Black" suffix, do indeed come in black, as well as other color variants. For example, the BlackJack actually comes in red in addition to the normal black. So, the iPhone having a "black" suffix is in line with a separate model.

IMHO, I don't think AT&T would let that kind of faux pas happen without quickly fixing the problem. I logged in about 20 minutes ago and the option to select an Iphone black was there. I think they are gearing up for an updated Iphone release before the WWDC. As for the photo, I hope it's not a glossy back like it indicates, rather, I would prefer a matte finish like the black macbooks. Another thought is maybe it's intentional, perhaps they are in cahoots with Apple to try and create some hype and drive interest up. The thought that Apple would sell them before AT&T gets them in the stores is very intriguing but I don't think it's plausible but I wish it were. I am betting on an announcement tomorrow with a very short if any wait for availability, Apple cannot afford to lose this much revenue on such an important product.

I really, really, really hope this is a MB type of move. I don't want a black iPhone and I won't buy one if it is black - I don't care what they put in it. Hopefully there will be two versions - 1 version that looks markedly similar to the current iPhone and a black plastic one for all you people who like plastic (no idea why but I have seen a number of people clamoring for it).

You know, I have to wonder about the abilities of the folks who manage the AT&T website. They've managed to push out the details of non-released products & services a number of times over the past few weeks. It almost seems like incompetence to me. I don't know about you, but if I ran a corporate site like that I'd make sure to have one private site to do development on, a test site to test out what you've developed, and a whole process in place to ensure nothing goes out to the production site until the appropriate time.

I can't imagine this would show up on ATT's website on May 12 if the product in question weren't going to be announced for a whole month. I think this, along with the Apple Store online being sold out of iPhones might just be indication of a new product coming very, very soon.

Ummmmm, they're the sole carrier.
I think people are really taking this a little too far, it's just a color option. I'm guessing there will just be color options. Standard and black versions available from ATT and an additional Red option available through Apple Stores. Now maybe the standard version will be 8gb and the black will be 16gb, who knows.

AT&T just can't keep secrets. They don't have infrastructure for it. I think it is because the usual scene with phones is a phone is introduced way, way before it goes on sale. Same with new phone services. So they just don't know how to do testing on the sly. Remember the stories about Apple going to great lengths keeping the original iPhone secret from virtually everyone in AT&T, even the higher ups?

We will have to agree to disagree. Time will tell. Using the Blackjack as an example, the original model was black. They introduced a red, and called it the Red. The original iphone was black (at least from the front, which is how AT&T shows the photos for identification purposes). If a new model comes out that is truly all black, it would make no sense to call it the "black". Too much confusion on the part of Joe Consumer.
More importantly, in the case of the BlackJack II (and probably most other cell phones), the black and red are IDENTICAL phones with different color shells. A new and improved model would warrant a name that implied more than a different color.

I'm not in support of a design change to the look of the existing iPhone so heres to hoping that this is some sort of default placeholder or something.
I think this could give us a hint that they may be selling an Edge model along side the 3G model since the two options exist. Then again, they may just have the iPhone selection for those that have an Edge model before the new one is released. You could argue that if Apple were going to ship both together they would not stop shipping the current model prior to the release of the new one unless there were some kind of upgrade to it as well.
To finish my rambling they may just be offering a silver and a black version of the same iPhone. Similar to what they do with the iPod.

I think it sounds absurd for the 3G iPhone to come out at WWDC. Between the revelation that o2 is sold out and now the Apple store, coupled with leaks like this, it's clear that an iPhone refresh could be literally minutes away.
Consider: Maybe this isn't a leak/mistake. Maybe it's intentional. Have they taken it down yet?
At the latest, we'll see the 3G iPhone by next week.

To clarify, from the looks of this page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Mobile_(USA)#3G_Upgrade), 3G was launched by T-Mobile about 12 days ago, and only in New York City.
AT&T, on the other hand, already has 3G in place anywhere I would desire to go at the moment. They've gotten a fairly significant headstart, and it will take quite a bit for T-Mobile to catch up.

As an admin who takes care of the OS on some of the servers that run att.com, I can tell you that yes, there are test, stage, and production boxes. There are any number of other ways that this could have happened.
I personally am being optimistic and hoping that it is listed today because Apple intends to announce and start selling them today. 6pm? I can dream. While I'm at it, this damn thing better have GPS, or I'm spending the money on a gun I've been eyeing for a while now.

I'm betting that it is a quiet announcement. maybe not tomorrow, but before WWDC. The Apple Store on Michigan Avenue has been out of iPhones for over a week. If the only major change is 3G, that's not really a major reason for an existing iPhone customer to upgrade ... might get some new customers on board, but it's not earth shattering. No need to have a big event, just push it out the door. And I bet the black is in addition to the existing iPhone.
And I suppose there could be a 1.1.5 that adds 3G functionality, it doesn't necessarily have to wait for 2.0.

this is all very exciting, and i really hope its released very soon, as in this week. But what about the whole thing about Apple ordering the iPhone for some at the end of May and lots from June onwards? And the AT&T holiday block out? These things just make June the likely time, but then this new news makes it seem earlier!
So confusing!

Just tried that. The menu:
iPhone 8GB/16Gb
iPhone 3g
Clicking the 3g link redirects to a form that says:
"Sign up for the upcoming release of our Apple iPhone 3G cases.
Fill the following fields and be the first to be notified when the cases are released."
Interesting.

I have always thought Apple would be very smart to release the next iPhone early because both graduation and Father's Day will be huge selling opportunities for them. There are always going to be those who buy the latest gear because it's the latest gear but most consumers are looking for a reason to buy something. Getting Dad and/or your grad the latest tech gadget is one of the best reasons available. After that, it's people getting them for themselves just because they want one.
Also, it will allow SJobs to talk more about the SDK, new Macs and OSX 10.6 at the WWDC.

So while current non-3G iPhones will be able to use the 2.0 software, they will not be any faster surfing the Internet than they are now.

Would apple really release this quietly? Me thinks not, especially if it turns out to have GPS. Its definitely to their advantage to do an event and by now they may have many more SDK made apps they can demo to show off what is great about the new version.
If it does come early, I doubt it'll be tomorrow. And also, all the June pointers are still strong and WWDC or right before/after might be whats still planned.

Someone on your network has their computer visible.
To be more precise someone on your network has their iTunes library shared (and has called it deathbox). If you're not on a shared network, or have your wireless access point open (ie: no password set) then someone is "stealing" your bandwidth. If your access point is not shared, one of your roommates has their iTunes shared.

Agreed, but the uproar caused by doing this in two separate time periods without letting the public know what also will be coming in a few weeks is a bad move and I doubt Apple will do that. I agree though that it is still likely that there will be two versions, but if so they will be released together or we will be notified that there will be two versions.
And all the money spent on design isn't wasted, its gonna largely remain the same design. Just because its updated doesn't mean all effort it took to get to the model before it was a waste.

Ive just been browsing through loads of sites that sell iPhone accessories, and pretty much all of them name their items based on the colour of the item, i.e silicon case for iPhone-black, headset for iPhone-black........this is the colour of the ACCESSORY, not the PHONE.

In response to the Apple online representative who indicated next week there would be an announcement or more information on the iPhone, I have spent too much time repeatedly going to the Apple online chat. I asked each different representative the same type of question (brother's bday next week, no apple stores near me, want iphone, was going to order online but....) and each one gave me the canned response of "we do not have any information on the availablility of the iphone at this time. please continue to check www.apple.com/store for updated availability."
So the one that "spilled the beans" either prompted an internal slap on the wrist, he was having a bit of a fun, or he just didn't value his job and was telling the truth. Still very suspicious at this point.

Some of you guys are seriously clueless. It's not significant that AT&T shows an "iphone black" on their site. What's significant is that it's a different model than the regular iphone. If there were no new model coming out in the next few weeks there would be no need for a seperate designator.
1. iphone black is just what it's been labeled on that site.
2. doesn't mean apple will call it the "iphone black"
3. some of you are seriously dumb asses that don't know the first thing about how companies do these things.

Where'd you grab that from? It does look much more black/grey in comparison to the iPhone image on Apple's site, but at this point I wouldn't take it to mean much, as it could simply just be a difference in lighting when the product shot was taken (or the 3D image rendered, whichever it may be)

The fact that AT&T also list two products iPhone and iPhone Black would suggest that actually an iPhone Black is imminent.

While there have been rumors and some concrete information that there will be multiple carriers in international markets, we haven't heard anything about the U.S. going away from AT&T exclusivity.
To be honest, who would you go to? Does anyone else really have a solid 3G GSM network in the U.S.?
The only other major GSM provider is T-Mobile and their 3G network just went on line. Its a moot point though. There's still four more years left on the exclusivity deal.

Like other people said, OS version 1.1.5 could handle the 3G part of the phone. At next month's developer's conference they can fully release the software development kit. The WWDC doesn't have to announce a minor upgrade to the iPhone, which at this point is all 3G capability would be.
There's long weekends in North America coming up, what better way to make a buttload of cash than getting people to line up on their days off?
Blackberry has announced their 3G product, Apple would want to steal some of that thunder and get their product out ASAP.
They're out of the original iPhone. Not by a few days, but a month before? Apple doesn't **** up that badly.
We'll see, but I'm getting more optimistic.

Alex
I agree. I think it will be tomorrow because Apple usually waits until Tuesday for some reason. It's like they think Monday is too obvious, however they have been known to make Monday announcements, but by this point in the day my money is on tomorrow or at WWDC.

The only other major GSM provider is T-Mobile and their 3G network just went on line. Its a moot point though. There's still four more years left on the exclusivity deal.
The 5-year contract has not been verified. There was a single article (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/wireless/2007-05-21-at&t-iphone_N.htm) in the USA Today that everyone cites, and the article itself doesn't say where it got the information from. That being said, T-Mobile's 3G rollout is critically behind even AT&T, which isn't even that great compared to the EV-DO networks the CDMA companies have assembled.

2 Questions for you?
1. What colour is the iPhone, Black or Silver?
2. Does every phone have a colour and the end of the name (Prada)
The fact that AT&T also list two products iPhone and iPhone Black would suggest that actually an iPhone Black is imminent.
1. If you was to call it one colour, it would be black based on the facia.
2. As far as I can see, yes. The LG phones have their product number and then colour.

I think tomorrow we will see exactly the same iPhone, but with a 3G... and June 9th fresh designed iPhone 2 with a gps. For me it make sense. Otherwise there is no point just to discontinue this model ...
I'd be very surprised if they did this. Apple knows there are thousands of people waiting for the 3G iPhone. If they were to release one in the next few days but then release a better phone a month later they'd never hear the end of it from upset consumers. Thousands of people who ran out to buy what they thought was THE new iPhone would try to return them a month later to get the new one.

May 12, 2008, 03:08 PM
the only way they would just release it on a Tuesday with out the typical press event was if the form factor were staying exactly the same and the Apple home page just said "iPhone: Still the best mobile internet device, communications device, and iPod. Now even faster and smarter with 3G and GPS." This would be a similar kind of update as the iMac and macbook (pro) speed bumps. Not an outright redesign, but a marked improvement in the internals.
If you look at the iMac, they had a press event for the unveil of the Aluminum form factor, and haven't had any since then. I think the iPhone will follow a similar trend. Even iPods only get press events if the form factor changes. Price changes and memory bumps (shuffle, touch for example) just get a homepage banner
If this were the case, I'd expect a release this week or the next, and the WWDC to be focused on the SDK, possible some OS X, maybe new notebook form factor or whatnot. which would be fine with me, I love the current form factor of the iPhone, and I want one asap lol
Otherwise, if the form factor changes, it won't be until WWDC that it is announced and middle of June for a release.

They've got a whole host of accessories (http://shop.carphonewarehouse.com/accessories/all/?SEARCH=iphone+black&Submit.x=0&Submit.y=0) for the 'iPhone Black'....
They could just be referring to the colour of the accessory, of course
Have you noticed that all of the accessories are BLACK in color, as opposed to being white/pink/brown. Writing black after the product description describes the product, which is the case or power adapter or whatever have you, not the device (iphone).
EDIT: you changed it as I was writing this.

Or how about the point that WWDC is not an event to launch CONSUMER PRODUCTS? I hate that the media has grabbed ahold of this event in recent years just because Steve is there. The only thing of significance ever announced at WWDC was the G5, and that was because they wanted developers to start working coding for it.
They don't need WWDC to announce the 3G iPhone. At WWDC they'll discuss the SDK and how it can apply to the recently released 3G iPhone, and announce new 3G coding modules or whatever in the final SDK, with classes going on at WWDC to teach them everything. But the 3G iPhone can easily be released weeks beforehand, maybe to let people and developers get a taste of the speed and start their wheels turning on new software ideas before WWDC.

To me, it's possible that Apple could be re-labelling the current product (which would be the forthcoming announcement) along with a 'watch-this-space' for the next-gen version.
It makes a bit more sense that way to me about them cropping up on various websites.

I think there is evidence that could support release for tomorrow or late June. Did anyone order an iPhone just prior to Apple blocking the purchase of the current product? If so, when do you receive the phone? Apple may want to fulfill these orders and then have a nice gap in the back order sales on current model to ensure they don't have any overlap on with the 3G Version.
As much as I want the new model tomorrow, I think June has a lot of evidence for a launch with the AT&T vacations, etc.

Here's an idea:
iPhone 3G comes out this week. It's bought like crazy by Apple fans, and people who don't mind spending $500 on a phone. It's a minor update anyway, doesn't need a huge announcement.
June 9th, SJ announces the iPhone Nano at a cost of $250. AT&T stores need all their staff for the much larger number of people willing to drop $250 on a phone/iPod combo. iPhone 2.0 is released for everyone, and Apple keeps making money.

Ass covering by ATT...it WAS a place holder, but not for current iPhone models. why would they need place holders for models that the only distinction is the memory capacity? and if they did, why would they show up in a selection field on a page that has nothing to do with the memory? An iPhone is an iPhone regardless of the size, so it'd have to be distinctly different to warrant a placeholder

I like Engadget's sarcastic response to the ATT canned response...
We've just received an official statement from AT&T regarding the presence of an "iPhone Black" on its model selector earlier today: "The reference to 'iPhone Black' was simply a temporary placeholder used over the weekend for a scheduled catalog update. It was meant to temporarily distinguish the various iPhone models-4GB, 8GB and 16GB-but was never reassigned. We're changing the site now." Makes total sense, right? Three models of iPhone, two placeholders: iPhone and iPhone Black. You know, because "Black" has so much to do with memory capacity, and is easier to remember than 4, 8, or 16GB.
Also, AT&T, we know those cigarettes are yours, so you can stop telling us you were "just carrying them for a friend." We're not stupid, you know.

Engadget.com is now sating O2 has original iPhone back in stock.
This is an interesting link (http://www.puremobile.com/Apple/Apple-iPhone-Black-GSM-Phone/)though.....
If you read it all, it also states this:
Before you purchase, please note the following:
- This is the 8GB version of the unlocked iPhone
- The phone is now 100% software unlocked.
- Insert your SIM Card and you're ready to go. Nothing else is required on the part of the user for the phone to work.
- Visual voice mail will not work on this iPhone as it is a carrier dependant feature
- The phone is 100% brand new
- The phone has been upgraded to firmware version: 1.1.4 - Do not update or restore the firmware of this phone as it may lead to the phone becoming locked
- Puremobile will not be held responsible if the user re-locks the phone after purchase
In other words, this is just a software unlocked iPhone.
Nothing to see here, move along.

So release it without the 2.0 firmware but a version of the 1.1.x firmware that enables 3G. If it's SO FAR AWAY from being ready from primetime that would mean a loooong time to go with no iPhones for Apple to sell.

So release it without the 2.0 firmware but a version of the 1.1.x firmware that enables 3G. If it's SO FAR AWAY from being ready from primetime that would mean a loooong time to go with no iPhones for Apple to sell.
Exactly, Apple are NOT going to stop selling iPhones until WWDC. Its coming VERY SOON!

I dunno why, but i have this weird feeling that i'll be sorely disappointed with the next iPhone. Just this feeling that it'll be a meh product.
On another note that Blackberry Bold is looking mighty tempting

I will celebrate with you all if they're released, however there was speculation that they would stop selling old iphones within 2-4 weeks of the new one so that customers couldnt return the older versions in favour of the newer ones.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but that would make sense if you're out for a buck or hundred.

You can dress up a turd to look like a Mr. Big, but the fact remains that it's still just a turd that looks like a Mr. Big.

good point and we know the apple doesn't like to give much away but why can't they just announce "hey no iphones just now coz we are going to announce new ones shortly"
that would be enough to end all these mental threads!!!
oh wait stuff that what would we have to talk about:confused::confused:

The blackBerry Bold has a tiny calculator screen.
And, jonny, who knows? However, Apple will make more money selling iPhones for as long as possible, as not EVERYONE will want a new one. Also, if its after 14 days of purchase you cant take it back just coz you want a upgrade.

So besides 3G, what else do we expect this new iPhone to have?
There needs to be quite a few killer features to persuade someone like me, who only bought their iPhone 7 months ago (UK launch) to go out and buy a new one.
-larger capacity?
-GPS?
I'm hard pushed to think of much else they can do on the hardware side. Very prepared to be surprised though.

Today on the way home from work I stopped by my local AT&T store. I've decided with 3G coming to take the plunge and get the iPhone family plan for myself, my wife and daughter. At the same time, I wondered if AT&T could bundle other services with it at a discount (such as home internet and TV).
The lone AT&T rep in the store seemed pleased to see me. I said that I was interested in talking about the various plans for the iPhone. The rep immediately stiffened up and replied, "I'm sorry. We don't carry the iPhone anymore. You have to go to the Apple store."
I expressed puzzlement at that. I said I didn't want to buy the iPhone itself; I just wanted to talk about plans available and whether AT&T could bundle other services with it. Again the rep replied, "We don't deal with the iPhone, sir. You'll have to go online to find out what services are offered."
Then he pulled a phone from under the counter and said, "Instead, we have this really nice phone we just got in, made by LG." (I'd never seen the LG knock-off before. I was surprised how narrow it is.) I told him that I was only interested in the iPhone, and his response was that he couldn't help me; I had to go online.
EDIT: I just called AT&T and spoke with a sales rep. It was surreal. I told the rep what I was looking for and his response was, "Yes sir, we can certainly help you with that. Have you seen the new LG phone?" I told him I had. He said, "It's really nice and it's just like the iPhone." I told him that I wasn't interested in the LG. He asked why I wanted the iPhone. I told him, "The iPhone will interface seamlessly with my Mac, I love the user interface, it works like a PDA plus I can watch movies, listen to music and also project slideshows when I'm doing presentations."
He respsonded without missing a beat. "Yeah, well the new LG can do most of those things, plus you can watch TV!" I just said, "Thank you," and hung up.
WTF?

I'm sure its been said already, but I don't feel like reading through 11 pages of posts...
AT&T can get nothing right. From the on again/off again/on again/off again iPhone wifi to the "black" option on their website, they (collectively) have no idea what's going on - the left hand has no idea what the right hand is doing.
Perhaps the left hand is too busy picking your pocket while the right hand is, uh, doing something to themselves that I wont mention in mixed company.

Many possibilities here. Might not be a corporate AT&T store, might be unknowledgeable salespeople, might be sold out of iPhones and is sick of fielding questions about it. Any number of things could be going on here.

Well, I think Apple wasnt going to introduce 3G at WWDC but now there's so much pressure over them (also because of AT&T leaks), they can't disappoint everyone anyone.

Well there have been plenty of rumors pointing to the iPhone being sold on my networks.

They wont announce a 3G iPhone at WWDC. Why would they announce it at a developers conference? It's a consumer product. It'll simply be released, or have it's own event. Apple have never, to my knowledge, announced a consumer Mac or iPod at WWDC let alone a phone.

Maybe AT&T backed out of the exclusivity contract they had with apple and now we consumers are free to choose the service provider of our choice

Oh god hope those images weren't real! Black glossy (aka the black case/colorware mod) I can live with, but those crappy LG-style images I can't!
iPhone 3G now announcement now imminent. Expect an announcement this week I'd imagine. Tomorrow? :D

If they use plastic then I guess it is easier for waves to travel through that.
However, the MacBook Air which is Apple's latest or one of their latest products, is thin and made with glass/brushed aluminum. I think the new iPhone should take the same route and keep the chrome and do an all black brush aluminum back.

jeeze tomorrow would be perfect but its to good to be true. Why would they release a new iPhone with a still in beta phase software? (i doubt they'd still put 1.4 on the new 3G considering it doesnt even have the 3G switch on off option)

1.1.5 again I will say this. It is a very viable option.
