I think you have your chronology confused... Apple acquired the next.com domain when they acquired NeXT....

Interestingly, Next PLC pre-dates NeXT (the name, they claim, was applied to a chain bought by the company in 1981, the company itself having existed since 1864, when we were busy fighting the War of Northern Aggression), although they apparently had to make do with a next-best web address, having missed the boat to their next-door-across-the-pond neighbor, Steve Jobs. :)
