SuperDrive is a name. It cannot "replace" your stuff. That's like saying a Ferrari replaces a supercar. But it in itself is a supercar. And the harddisk is separate. Even apple's spec pages on their site acknowledge that

What exactly is the practicality of ditching an optical drive for some odometer-crazy feeling of having 1TB of storage? If you need that much, buy an external drive (either the small or large variety) and put a 300-500GB drive inside.

You have to remove your SuperDrive to install this drive. Read the article. You don't have to take the word lose literally. If you install this drive, you no longer have an internal SuperDrive. I'm sure many would find this an inconvienence.
