Apple is set to open their new Boston Apple Store on Boylston Street (http://www.apple.com/retail/boylstonstreet/) on Thursday, May 15th at 6:00 pm. Apple will be giving away limited edition T-shirts and "other surprises" at the store opening. Every Apple product is available for you to get to know and test-drive at the Apple Store. And the top floor is dedicated entirely to programs, support, and services. It's home to the Genius Bar, One-to-One personal training and free one-hour workshops to get the most out of your Apple products. Come early and be among the first to experience what the Apple Store is all about.
The latest Apple Store is reportedly (http://gizmodo.com/387178/new-boston-apple-store-largest-in-the-world) the largest Apple store in the U.S., taking the title from the New York City 5th Avenue store (http://www.apple.com/retail/fifthavenue/).

I live in Tokyo, Japan and the Ginza Apple Store here has 4 floors. The third is a small theater where they give demonstrations on how to use various apps and sometimes have pro graphic artists come in or live music performances.
I was wondering if having a theater and such events is a usual feature of larger U.S. Apple Stores?

Interesting timing. Boston is "higher education central", and this store is opening right before commencements of BC, UMass(Boston), Tufts, Wellesley, Amherst, Brown (Providence, RI), MIT, Harvard, and a lot of others. People are coming from all over the world to these events, and returning. The grads already have iPods and laptops, but I wonder if there's anything else they might be able to use. Hmmmmm.

Is this Boston's first store?
Yeah, I've been traipsing to Cambridgeside for the last two years. I even took my 24" iMac there by taxi once for service at the Genius Bar. The Boylston store is definitely going to be a lot better...easily 10 times bigger, plus it's a 15-20 minute walk or 5 minute T ride from me (and most of Boston, for that matter), and I won't have to play the waiting game for a Green line to Lechmere. Yesterday to get to Cambridgeside I took a train to Government Center, then North Station and then finally to Lechmere because so few of them go the whole way through.
I also walked by the Boylston store last night and was amused that people were already congregating across the street, and I saw a few people chatting on iPhones. I snapped a couple quick pics while I was walking by.

Dude, we are as close as 4 T stops away from Boylston, and we are way larger than some of these schools. Thanks for forgetting us orz. The commencement is this Sunday too.
Anyway, if it's tomorrow, it may be worth checking out. Just hope that there won't be a long line there... Does anyone know how early people go there to line up and approximately how many people will be there by 6pm? I hope it's not worse than lining up for a Sox ticket...

If you remember, the store wasn't supposed to have columns at all - the locals wanted to simulate columns in front, to "fit in" to local architecture. I think it would have looked cooler to see three floors 'floating' with the full glass front. sigh.

definitely agree here. When the heavy stuff needs repair, a $5 cab ride to Boylston beats a $20 cab ride to Cambridgeside any day. More Genui will help as well - the Cambridge store always has a long wait. (Never mind the store is often so crowded you can't get in the place... god for Apple, bad for me)

Possibly, but I'm sure that a lot of the people likely to show up at the grand opening are already well aware of the impending release of the 3G iPhone so would be unlikely to buy one. I guess we'll just have to wait until tomorrow night to find out for sure though.

Yep, the first Apple Store in Boston (although the CambridgeSide Galleria one is barely not Boston. It's right across the river.) But yeah, this will be very nice having it within a 5-10 minute walk from my house. More Genui will help as well
The plural of 'genius' is 'geniuses'. If you were trying to use Latin for some reason, 'genius' is a second declension masculine noun, so the nominative plural form would be 'genii'. 'Genui' is the first person singular perfect active indicative form of 'gigno, gignere', and means 'I gave birth'.

My programming is rather crude, and has rendered me completely oblivious to fun. Also, I'm a cranky old curmudgeon. :)
At any rate, I'm tempted to cross the river and check out the festivities tomorrow, but the throngs of people might be a bit much for me.

Just walked by the new store at lunch. There's a lot of people inside (on all floors) milling around. Looks mainly like reporters, press, employees and camera people. There's a couple of security and PR types out front answering questions and making sure none of us "riff-raff" gets in. :(
No line yet, but I won't be surprised to see one early in the day tomorrow. :apple:

They couldn't have picked the worst time to open a new store right there. They should wait about 4 more days...
Starting on Sunday in Boston is the HOW Design Conference. A whole conference of Graphic Designers from all other the country and other parts of the world, I doubt there would be a bigger apple fan crowd of people then designers... Plus the conference is AT the Prudential center, which is right there isn't it?
So yeah, they are off by about 4 days to open this store at the best time. If they did it during the conference they would have a huge line, and probably hit some of the highest sales of a store opening.
At least it will be open during it, i bet the genius bar is going to be packed with designers with problems...
I'm flying in for the conference on Saturday, so i'll have to check it out while i'm there.

I think the poster talking about the New iPod was referring the text, not the apple remote. Think outside the box and look at the entire picture, not just the remote.
Really?
I guess that's why "Gook" asks this:
i know its off topic... but i dont know where to post it...
check this...

the image on the right side... new ipod????
well could it be the new ipod?
"it" obviously has to refer to what's depicted, not the mention of "the 'new' iPod".
Oh, and you mentioning "thinking outside the box" is a joke. You could just as well be parroting the Apple-slogan "think different" - which, for all intents and purposes is falling for marketing - especially since Apple haven't been "different" or have been thinking "outside the box" for years. But have fun making yourself belive you're able to "think outside the box" :p

a news station in Boston (7 News, for all that are from the area) just did a report on the new store. They showed the three floors and talked about how each one is for a different thing. They also talked about how the roof is green and how it will help the local aquifers when it rains... it looked really cool! I have to go into Boston on Friday and I'm definitely making a stop at the new store!
also, did anyone else hear what an Apple reseller that is right behind the new Apple store did? They buried one of their uniform shirts in the concrete of the new Apple store, hoping to get some good business out of it. They tried to replicate what happened in New York at the new Yankee Stadium with burying the Ortiz jersey there.... i thought it was pretty funny and clever...

Isn't the free T-shirt enough? I was at the opening of the Fair Oaks store in VA a couple of weeks ago. Just being a part of the energy was enough for me. But true once you make it in the store - yep another Apple store.
What I was wondering was is how big can you make an Apple Store? What does the store in Boston have that the Apple store in the typical mall does not? I mean there's only so much -- Apple products and peripherals...

I wonder how much more they'll have too, I'd imagine stuff will be a lot easier to find and navigate.
Everytime I go to the Apple store in Orlando (well both times...) it's so god damn crowded I often really don't have time to go up and use computers or anything without feeling like someone is hovering over me and waiting for me to leave.

That's nothing, I once took my Power Mac there by bus. It's still going to be closer for me than Boylston Street, though.

Yeah, I normally don't like using taxis, and the experience that time was a reminder why when the driver started driving off while I was standing outside the taxi with the door open leaning in to pull out my iMac. He even ran over the tip of my shoe (I really got lucky on that one...that could have been a lot worse). I'm not sure it really was any better than lugging it on the Green Line would have been.

Just walked by there this morning on my way to the nearby Stahbucks. As of 9:30, there were about 15 people in line.
The sidewalk in front the store itself is clear. The line was fenced off about 20' or so down the sidewalk from the front of the building. There were a couple :apple: security guys making sure no campers got too close, and bunch of Boston Police collecting double-time and peering in the window.

Parking's not that hard. Street spaces are easy to find at that time. Plus, the Sox are out of town.
Only people who live as far away as you do think it's hard to find parking. Hard for those folks is not being able pull right in front of where you want to be and find a spot within 30 seconds.

So it was interesting how the local TV stations covered the opening. The ones who gave the best extensive coverage were the Channel 7(NBC) and Channel 25(Fox) stations. Channel 7 covered the hype and the sight to see a line stretching down 4 blocks on Fairfield.
I liked Channel 25's coverage too. They focused more on how non-nonsensical it seems to open a giant new flagship store in the midst of the current/impending recession. They asked a bunch of customers if they were gonna buy anything, and apparently many of them said no. They came to get a free T-shirt and to check the store out. There weren't any special sales, discounts, incentives to buy anything there.
However, they did mention how the Boston store had sold out of its iphones. While I was there, they also had to restock the shelves with airport expresses a few times. Some of the Sox players who came by, like Mike Lowell walked away with SEVERAL imacs, MB/MBPs, and software titles in their bags.
Either case, a big show it was in Boston yesterday.

I've seen people with commemorative iPod Socks, but I'm not sure if they were for purchase or I just missed them.
I got my commemorative iPod sock a little after 6 at the top of the staircase on the third floor.

Hey, looks like the quote button is broken from unclosed tags :D
Notice I quoted drb, drb quotes sky blue, not aswitcher, etc

I forgot about the red iPod sock. Yes, I got one of those, too. Upstairs on the 3rd floor. I think it's still in my backpack.
I'm going back next week for a couple training sessions. I think it's going to be a great location for an :apple: store. Looking forward to taking advantage of some of the extra training offerings they should be able to offer there with all of that space up on the top floor (eg, Pro Labs). :D

Yep, I did too. I was kind of "looking out" for them since I had heard about it. I was standing around the staircase on the 2nd floor taking pics for a little bit then wandered up to the 3rd floor and got mine there.

What sort of notice do Apple normally give for a store opening? We've got one opening "any day now" in Sydney - but still no actual date.
They advertised for staff about 6 months ago!

Well, as this thread dies out...
There have been rumors for a while of Cambridge re-doing that store. I've always found it a bit claustrophobic, and actually tough to get in and out of if just one or two people are standing up front (you know that choke point).
Now that Boylston is open, and the summer doldrums are almost upon us - do you think that renovation will happen?

i was there last sunday. i put my sisters youtube vid on the :apple:tv in the back, seems like good exposure for that. otherwise, its a cool store, nice and spacious.

The only way I can see renovating the Cambridge store is if they have the room to physically expand it to make it larger..
You wanna see claustrophobic? Go to the Salem NH (Rockingham Mall) store on a weekend

I wish I was near an Apple store so I can see the Macs upclose to see what they can really do. My closest is Annapolis 175 mi away. Many consumers react with a purchase descision when they can enjoy the full sensory experience of a product; seeing, touching, and hearing. The only Apple retailer near me is Best Buy, and according to their website they have Macs in-store, however every time I go to Best Buy to check out the Macs they never have one on display. And I see plenty of empty display spots. Almost as if they have been given direction to sell only PC. Apple really needs to pursue other retail options to have an even playing field chance against the cheapo, and junko, PC's in retail stores. I'm very eager to make the jump from my chronically ill PC's to Mac.
