View Full Version : Poll: What camera type/brand do you use?

Grimace
May 14, 2008, 10:45 PM
Without digressing into battles over which is best, I'm curious to see what types and brands MR users are shooting with as their primary camera.

The poll choices attempt to differentiate Film, Medium/Large Format, DSLR, and Point & Shoot users. Obviously we could list three times as many poll options but my assumption is that most people on this MR forum are shooting with modern DSLRs. That category is broken down by manufacturer for that reason.

For my fellow statisticians, I know this is piss-poor methodology -- let's just run with it and see what happens! :)

Olympus OM-4 is pretty much my primary camera along with a Rolleiflex T for MF. Then there's my 40D for dig...but I don't use that for leisure shots as much anymore.

But I chose 35mm since I guess I use it the most.

I just got my Sony a300 yesterday! :D

Everything good so far. The grip is really nice and the controls and menus are easy to use.
This is my first dslr, and it feels like I have been reading millions of reviews trying to decide brand and model. What tipped the scales was the ergonomics and the great value for money. :)

Pentax K10D :D
Had the largest viewfinder and felt the most solid of all the cameras I held. Add shake reduction and sensor cleaning wasn't a bad deal.

One year on it's going great, accepting older lenses is pretty handy too.

As with Apple, it's nice to be different ;)

My first camera was a Sony DSC-H5 which had a great zoom and I loved taking pictures with it, but I knew there were shots I would never capture because I was limited to the in-camera lens. When I started looking for my next camera I knew I wanted something I could grow into. Two weeks ago I bought my first DSLR, a Nikon D300 with the kit lens, a 18-200mm 1.3.5-5.6. So as you can imagine, the learning curve on the Nikon is off the chart. Somewhat overwhelmed, I am having fun shooting and reading everything I can get my hands on, diving into the deep end and enjoying the learning! :D

Been a Canon (35mm) & Pentax (MF) user/fanboy :p for many years, but jumped into the DSLR fray a couple of years ago. Bought a Nikon D50 - solely because it fit my hands better than the Canon equivalent, it's the first Nikon I've ever owned - and am very pleased with the shots I've taken with it (quite a few have gotten into print).

Got the Olympus E-400 (http://www.olympus.co.uk/consumer/dslr_E-400.htm) now. (Recently upgraded the 14-42 kit lens to the oh. so. gorgeous. 14-54mm ƒ2.8-3-5 (http://www.four-thirds.org/en/products/standard.html#03).)

Probably gonna get the Olympus E-520 (http://www.olympus.co.uk/consumer/dslr_digital_slr_e-520_19285.htm) (the 14-42/70-300 kit or just the body and an additional 70-300 (http://www.four-thirds.org/en/products/telephoto.html#70-300)) once I can get a hold of it... ***droool*** ...and let my girlfriend "inherit" the E-400... :)

I started photography about 30 years ago with an Olympus OM-1, then OM-2n, then OM-4 and did my own darkroom stuff. They were great cameras and it was a great hobby, but film was expensive and cumbersome. I started noodling with digital point-and-shoots in the mid-90's, but they were pretty rudimentary back then. I finally switched to digital complelely with a Fuji S2 Pro about 6 years ago because I felt like it was a better camera than the Nikon D100, then moved over to Nikon when Fuji fell behind in subsequent models. I had a D2H for several years until recently moving up to a D3.

For years I bought only Olympus digital cameras. Last month I jumped ship and bought a Fujifilm S700. I really like it. It takes amazing pictures, the 10x optical zoom is great and I like being able to zoom while shooting video. The only downside the S700 has is slightly above normal purple fringing on high contrast shots.

No surprises thus far .. as of 86 votes, Canon & Nikon DSLR's far away the most common - and tied for number of users.

What is more interesting - less than 10% P&S cameras represented. Browsing the posts, one might have guessed that to be higher. Time will tell.

Grimace
May 15, 2008, 01:12 PM
Yeah, I too expected that we would have more users shooting (primarily) with P&S cameras. I assumed it would be similar to the vast number of people (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=472577) who use iPhoto as their primary editing/management software.

Pentax is also a bit higher than I expected -- I assumed that Sony DSLRs would come in third behind Nikon/Canon.

No poll is valid (to me) until there are over 100 data points, but we're getting there!

I thought the magic number for self-sampled selections was 350? Still, the numbers are pretty much trending near market share in the dSLR category, given what should amount to the margin of error.

You're a statistician? - or so I inferred from some earlier post. Apologies if I mis-understood.
In any event - isn't a poll like this 'invalid' regardless of numbers of respondents - simply because it is an "opt in" poll, rather than a direct poll of some representative sample of a given population?

Regardless - it does provide some insight into the users here on MR/Digital Photography. Speaking only for this relative newcomer - kudos to you for running the poll.

The methodology is invalid for so many reasons...I won't even go there! :p

Opt-in isn't too much of an issue, assuming that the same MR readers who frequent the photography forum also see the poll: most (but not all) people who post in this forum are also ones who will submit poll responses -- so the opt-in isn't too damaging. In my estimate, there are about 130-160 regular readers of the Photography forum.

Overall the data are pretty consistent so we'll see how it stacks up if it goes over 150 polls responses.

Was a Canon user but ‘switched’ to Olympus. Have been very happy so far. :)

That's interesting.

I am a Canon user however, before I had a Canon EOS10D DSLR I used an Olympus E10 & E20. They were fine cameras as I recall, did real well with them. However when Canon came out with at that time affordable DSLR's I bought a Digital Rebel, and returned it the next day in exchange got the 10D.

Since then I have acquired a 30D and now a 5D.

My children now share in using the old 10D.

Interestingly enough, I am in the market ... actually saving up to buy a Black & White digital back for a medium format camera.

It's a big ticket item, but I think the results will be well worth the cost.

Looking back at all my film work, I realize my heart is in B&W photography.

It depends I think. I could be extremely happy with $3,000 worth in camera equipment.:p

But maybe $5,000 would be the sweet spot. (Nikon D300, 70-200 f/2.8, 17-55 f/2.8 and 105 f/2.8 Micro). Mmmm....well, maybe $6,000 :D adding a flash, bag, etc.
The only disadvantage being that this kit would be extremely heavy.

Probably in this order...

Leica D-Lux 3 point and shoot (fits in my pants pocket)
iPhone (crap camera, but it's always with me)
Leica Digilux 3 (fantastic glass)

What is more interesting - less than 10% P&S cameras represented. Browsing the posts, one might have guessed that to be higher. Time will tell.

I don't think the vast majority of people (those who use only P&S cameras) would tend to be browsing the photography forum on the whole except when they have questions or are considering a purchase. Shooters, on the other hand, tend to use DSLRs more and many read this particular forum regularly.

I'd like to change my vote as I realize that I use a P&S far more than I use my DSLR.

Well if debunking myth is being pedantic then I'll be the first one to label myself as such. 1.5x gives you greater resolution, not more magnification. When you consider that you can crop into a 1.5x camera's image more than most full frame cameras then it can be viewed as magnification.

Still the image of the bird on your D300 at 400mm is the exact same size as the image of the bird on the D3 at 400mm (assuming the same lens was used, focal lengths do vary slightly from lens to lens).

Haven't gone out shooting yet today..... :) Still working on images I shot on Saturday!

Yes, indeed I am aware of the "myth" around the 1.5x "crop factor" but wanted both cameras anyway. At the time they were announced I couldn't make up my mind between them and decided that in many ways they complement each other quite well, so chose to purchase both. Actually, you can very clearly see the 1.5x impact when using a DX lens on the D3, because in the viewfinder the camera automatically provides a mask around the area that is not available when shooting with DX. Brings home the point very nicely.....

I have the optional battery grip on the D300 and stick in an EN-EL 4 (same battery that is used in the D3) and this boosts the frames-per-second to nearly the same as on the D3. I find that it works quite well for me to put the D300 on the tripod with the 300mm f/2.8 lens and then to have the flexibility of using the D3 for shooting people and other subjects with other lenses at the same site.

Both are excellent cameras and I am more than pleased with them.
