Just as the title says, I'm looking for your desert island top 5 rock albums. Music you can't live without, and you couldn't imagine your life without. Okay so maybe not that melodramatic. Basically, I'm hoping to find some cool new music to listen to.

In no meaningful order, mine are:
1. Eric Clapton - Slowhand
2. Led Zeppelin - IV (Zoso)
3. Counting Crows - August And Everything After
4. R.E.M. - Monster
5. Live - Throwing Copper

#5 is a bit iffy, a worthy album but not certain it belongs. So many others deserve recognition. I'm looking forward to seeing your lists.

How can we do this, only five? This is almost impossible. I'll try my best from memory, but the list will probably change in an hour.

1. Derek and The Dominoes - Live at the Fillmore
2. Johnny Cash - Orange Blossom Special (this is a very difficult choice, many Cash albums fit here.)
3. Beck - Mutations
4. Jimi Hendrix - Blues
5. Tied between NIN - The Fragile and Metallica - Master of Puppets.

In No Order:

1. Radiohead - Kid A

2. Soundgarden - Superunknown (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=388506)

3. P.J. Harvey - Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=405148) (although I'd want the UK version. It has an extra track that's good)

4. Pink Floyd - Ummagumma (or maybe Wish You Were Here (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=713418) instead)

5. Nine Inch Nails - And All That Could Have Been (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=110688)

Not sure about that last one. There's other things I would have liked to take. Jack-Off-Jill's Clear Hearts, Grey Flowers, Maybe some Primal Scream (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewArtist?artistId=718829). The Oasis album mentioned earlier would be nice. What about compilation albums? Maybe I wanna take the Beatles 1967-1970 (the Blue Album)? Or Pink Floyd's Echoes instead of Ummagumma?

Really I think we should get ten albums. :D

Ah! Yes! That was a good album. But my favorite NMH songs will always be "Bucket" and "Everything Is..."

I found On Avery Island to be a bit of a disappointment, though.

I assume the title thread would exclude anything with a lot of electronic instruments, so I guess I won't include anything by New Order :( - Here is my top 5 "rock" list. Albums everyone should own no matter what, I guarantee you.

1. "Freak Out!" by The Mothers of Invention
1. "Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO!" by Devo
1. "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" by David Bowie
4. "The Velvet Underground & Nico" by The Velvet Underground
5. The white album by The Beatles

...but if you're looking for some EXCELLENT runners-up:
6. "Isn't Anything" by My Bloody Valentine
7. "Daydream Nation" by Sonic Youth
8. "Doolittle" by The Pixies
9. "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" by Elton John
10. "The Cars" by The Cars

There are plenty of other Zappa/Mothers albums I'd probably rank before some of these (Definitely check out "We're Only In It For the Money", "Lumpy Gravy", "Sheik Yerbouti", "Bongo Fury", "Over-Nite Sensation", "Hot Rats", and countless others), but in the interest of keeping the list interesting, I've limited the Zappa selections to one album, "Freak Out!".

Staind - Break the Cycle
Disturbed - The sickness
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
Papa Roach - Infest
SOAD - Toxicity
I can't decide on the last 1. It would probably be Adema, Amema; Evanescence, Fallen; or Flaw, Through the Eyes.
(turned out not to be any of those  )

yeah, On Avery Island has a hard time standning out compared to aeroplane, but i think some of the songs are his best. have you heard the live at jittery joe's album? it's just jeff mangum, and he plays naomi, gardenhead, and baby for pree/where you'll find me now. when you strip away the production, those songs are just as worthy as anything on aeroplane, imo :).

everything is and bucket are both very good, but have you heard "Glue" and "engine"? two other songs worthy of mention.

I don't know if any of the live tracks I have are from the Live at Jittery Joe's album. I have a version of "Two-Headed Boy" with horns in it, "Glue" wasn't that good but I liked "Engine".

Have you heard "Little Birds"?

There's a song called "Sinking Ship" I like but it only exists as a file from a hissy old tape. I tried to clean it up but the quality is so bad it's hard to improve it.

Yeah, Metallica is really, really going downhill. I wasn't quite turned off by the Load reload or symphony stuff, however their attempt to be harder just plain bit major a**. I mean, fans whined that their lyrics are too soft, so they start cursing through every song and put out an album full of garbage. I'm sorely dissappointed and this is the final straw in their sellout strategy to entertainment. Too full of themselves to do something good.

i wish td could have kept making music. both of those albums were amazing. sleater-kinney just rocks. i've been listening to dig me out a lot lately, but yr right-- call the doctor is a better album. i had the awkward experience of seeing them open up for belle and sebastian. an odd pairing to say the least.

td were just...yea. if they'd continued....
but thats why the butchies made my runnerup list, for being 2/3 td vets.

ooh, that is an odd pairing...

however, one thing i love about most sleater-kinney concerts is that you go, sit through a halfway decent opening band, love the concert, turn on mtv a year later and....
the gossip
the white stripes
the yeah yeah yeahs
are there, and all the high school kids at work are giving you funny looks for reminiscing about when they opened for a band with more talent in their pinky than most of mtv has had over 20 years...
ah to educate the young.

Congratulations, I don't recognize a single artist/ album you posted. Maybe it would be helpful for folks to give a short description of the stuff posted so we can investigate the most interesting stuff we hear about (instead of google searching every random artist named with no inkling if its even a genre that we might be remotely interested in.)

Only five?? Ok, here goes....

Top five *rock* albums:
1. Van Halen - 1984 (Panama is one the best songs in the car to get you from point "A" to point "B" in the least amount of time)
2. Guns 'n Roses - Appettite for Destruction (Mr. Brownstone is still one of the all-time best rockers)
3. Boston - Boston (need that 70s FM rock every once in a while)
4. Billy Idol - Rebel Yell
5. Stone Temple Pilots - Core

Hmmm.... After looking at that list, I realize I have odd taste in music!

Anyway here are my five

its becoming quite interesting when you folks post albums, since i inadvertently like/love an album in every list. eclectic aren't i!

i'd like to defend white stripes for a moment. i didn't like them at first, but you should really give them a try. first, jack is a great guitar player. second, the songs are catchy. finally, you can't help liking seven nation army or jolene.

for those of you who like buckley, NMH, etc. you should try Modest Mouse.
